In the late 1960's a new type of American literature evolved, one that spoke straight to the social and economic needs of teens and largely bypassed the sentimental, boy-meets-girl fiction that had largely been the norm before. THE OUTSIDERS (1967) by a new teen author, S.E. Hinton, set the outlook and established the genre. "Young Adult" fiction, as the new writing came to be called, was a hit with adolescents and sympathizers alike. The novel is set in a medium-sized Oklahoma city and narrated by "Ponyboy" Curtis who, along with his two older brothers, was left to fend for himself when their parents died in a car wreck. After that, material privation is only part of the challenges the brothers face. The town is divided along class lines: on the East Side live working-class "Ponyboy," his family and friends, the so-called "Greasers." To the West are the middle-class "Socs," the better-off but not necessarily "rich" kids. These two mega-gangs have their own different styles, which author Hinton limns out in great detail: social interaction (Soc understatement versus Greaser passion), transportation (newer Detroit cars versus walking, or beaters), clothes (wheat jeans and Madras plaid versus t-shirts and leather), and of course music (the Beatles versus Elvis — after all, this was 1967). After a long-anticipated rumble pits Greasers against Socs, Ponyboy and friends decide it's best to go into hiding in another town. I can't really relate to this book, as i never experienced the issues this kid did. My son has to read this for school, so i read it first. For me personally, I prefer something more up beat. By far the prettiest cover I ever saw this book marks my 3rd read for February and a highly anticipated read. As I sit here thinking of how to rate my review, I had such a funny feeling when reading that when I finished I went to turn the page again but it was finished! The book was well written easy and breezy to read and easy to follow dialogue. Nothing hit big heart strings for me. The main character is extremely likeable and her employer is the opposite extremely easy to dislike. This story is a coming of age about an African American woman finding her wings, the story is really interesting and does not end in your typical happy fairytale, but I can't help but yearn for that fairytale ending since I loved the character so much. A really relevant story sheds a light on racism that is really unbelievable how different races and cultures are treated today as I have never experienced this myself or seen it being done and I can't even imagine that feeling. That's book sheds that beautifully. Struggling between 4 stars but the ending wants me to give it a 3.5Angel

You can tell right off the bat how intelligent and aware she is and she further proves this by her successes throughout her life. I’m so glad she wrote this book. I chose to listen to the book instead of reading it. I believe I got so much more out of it when listening to the author's voice. With her reading it, it gave me the tone that I would have thought she would wanted the readers to hear. It brought the book so much more alive to me. I have raved about this book to so many, some excited about the book and some not but willing to read it. Michelle made her life especially as the former First Lady raw and real. “For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end.” 4.5 stars. Sometimes I'll do this thing where I don't read/watch something because it's overhyped. I'm not sure what it is. I think it may be that I see it so much on my feed/dash/everywhere that I just … can't bring myself to approach it because I feel like it's in my face too much as it is. I wait for the hype to die down so I can make my own judgement or just … quietly approach it. That's what this book did. It quietly approached me and just … wow. I'll admit, I had no plans of picking this book up, seeing wildly mixed reviews and also just being overly-memoired at the moment. However, Ipicked up Obama's book and the best thing to come out of it is me wanting to read this book. Even in a memoir primarily focused on his presidency and decisions, Michelle Obama shines in that book. So I was curious. And I wasn't disappointed. Michelle Obama is an incredible woman. From the very start. Not when she became First Lady, not because she became First Lady, but just because of who she is. Reading about her life was absolutely fascinating. To learn about her life, starting from her early childhood in the South Side of Chicago all the way to where she is now is quite the journey and she masterfully tells the story where it all just flows so naturally (even if it didn't feel like it to her at the time). It's inspiring to see all the different routes, the what ifs, the doubts, the fear, the courage, all of it laid out for us. One thing's for certain, she's always been a badass, whether she's a hotshot lawyer Harvard Law graduate or First Lady. More than that, what was truly beautiful to read was her empathy, her strength of character, her constant love and wanting to do more for others and push people towards the opportunities she worked so hard for. There were quite a few moments that really got to me, because even on her constant journey to become, her kindness and care for others, whether it be family, women, the underprivileged is just … something else. And it's not all sunshine and success either. There's grief, there's sadness, there are difficulties and doubts, and there's life. I loved seeing (see: reading) all of it. I think, for me, the least interesting parts were the ones about her in the White House and that truly says something because part of me had thought it would have been the opposite. To see Michelle Obama truly becoming Michelle Obama is an experience. Her writing is beautiful yes but it's truly the story that kept me so entirely engaged. The words themselves are simple, straightforward. There's no prose, no fancying of words, and I appreciated it. It's accessible in a way one wouldn't necessarily expect and it speaks to you rather than reads to you, if that makes any sense. I listened to this as an audiobook and at no point did I feel as if I was. It kind of felt like one big speech, but better because there wasn't a moment I wanted to fast forward or skip through. I think I'd like to reread this at some point in its book form, just to really appreciate the words and her story that much more.sara.m

4.5⭐️’s I went into this book with very, very high expectations and was NOT DISAPPOINTED. I was terrified I wasn’t going to like it, but I ADORE THIS BOOK. Shane was incredibly relatable. In a world where it seems like everybody’s got relationship experience by high school, reading about a girl in college who’s never been in a relationship or been kissed is refreshing. Watching her deal with her anxiety and wanting to do and try new things inspired ME to want to go out and try new things. One of the things that I really loved about Shane, and the book itself, is [BEGINNING OF SPOILER]⚠️⚠️⚠️ how self-aware she is after she realizes she’s screwing up her second go at study abroad. She knew she didn’t want to be the person who didn’t exist outside of a relationship, which is something you don’t see often in the world. The fact that she set their relationship aside to make sure she followed her own dreams was incredible. Then, once she knew she’d accomplished what she’d set out to do and found herself again, she realizes she’s ready to re-enter the relationship. And I just really loved that. ⚠️⚠️⚠️[END OF SPOILER] The reason I took off half a star is because of the vagueness in cheating and that whole situation. I also wish we found out what happened to [BEGINNING OF SPOILER]⚠️⚠️⚠️ Amy after Pilot broke up with her. A incredibly powerful memoir about how a young daughter of a large isolationist, religious family that views government hospitals and schools with great suspicion grows up and through a series of decisions becomes a Harvard and Cambridge educated scholar. This story provides the space to contemplate some difficult but highly relevant topics such as self identity vs family ties, ones childhood memories vs memories of others you grew up with, loving ones family even when one's been ostracized. While some of the childhood stories are dark in nature and even frightening at times, it's also really funny at many points. Overall, just an incredibly powerful story that touches on self identity, self preservation, growing past very difficult childhood challenges, learning to deal with dysfunctional families, and ultimately about being true to ones self.jbtwarehouse
Difficult to read. Impossible to put down. A powerful, powerful book that you shouldn’t miss. I can’t just leave it at that because Tara Westover’s story deserves more than those few words. I don’t often read memoirs, but when I do I want them to be told by extraordinary people who have a meaningful story to tell and that would be faint praise for this book. It sounds odd to say how beautifully written this is because we are not spared of the ugly details of what this family was about, but yet it is beautifully written. I had to remind myself at times that I wasn’t reading a gritty novel, that Tara and her family were real as I got more than just a glimpse of a life that was hard for me to even imagine.prem.p
I have mixed feelings about this book. It was a difficult read, and for numerous reasons, the first being Tara's childhood. It's very difficult to imagine her life when I have no reference point, having had a "normal" childhood. She has no reference point to compare to her traumatic childhood, thus bringing her to spontaneously go back to her childhood home periodically, with the hope that things would change for the better. Her quest for knowledge outweighed her fears of failure, although failure was always a component in her mind. Her strength overcame her weaknesses, which is an amazing attainment! This was such a fun, relaxing read. I loved Ethan and Olive and all their crazy. Olive has the worse luck ever. Her sister does not. But when the tables turn and Olive’s sister and brand new brother-in-law are laid low from food poisoning, it’s possible her luck has changed. With a new job lined up and her relationship with Ethan moving from enemies to something more, things are looking up. Now if they can hold it together once the honeymoon is over. I absolutely adored this heroine, which is rare for me as I’m all about the hero. Olive had such a great, quirky outlook at life, even if it did seem a bit Eeyore-ish at times, a condition she eventually realizes and corrects. She’s the type of person I’d totally hang out with and love every minute of it. Her inner thoughts had me grinning and laughing as well as shaking my head at some of her antics. I would reread this book all over again because of her. We don’t get a look into Ethan’s thoughts until the epilogue and I really missed having it. It wasn’t easy to tell what he was thinking and his actions didn’t always speak louder than words. As the story unfolds and we are given information from him I grew to love him. He’s not an alpha hero, but something, dare I say…better? He’s the type of man you’d want in your life always. He’s just a regular guy with regular reactions and some insecurities as well as being fallible. In the end, with that epilogue, I was sold completely. This is such an entertaining read, a little lengthy but never boggy and with some drama that didn’t consume the whole story. The chemistry between these two was felt but not sizzling and I’d consider this a bit lite on the smexy times. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful book and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys a light hearted, low angst, enemies-to-lovers romance.carvanz

There's a first-rate book buried inside Sally Rooney's "Normal People" . . . but the novel is too loose-limbed and (often) implausible for its own good. Many characters are either very"good" or very"bad" WITH CAPITAL LETTERS (the two main protagonists' respective mothers, in particular . . . more types than believable people). Others are dropped onto the page . . . and disappear. Conversations between characters are often used to move the plot forward . . . but the exchanges themselves appear to come out of nowhere and don't seem to be something the speaker in question would actually say. It's also hard to believe that the man and woman around which the plot revolves are at the top of their class at Trinity College (on full scholarships, no less!): no one so much as cracks a book or spends any discernible time studying. Neither of them is particularly articulate . . . and the male character's conversations rarely progress beyond an oft-used (and muttered) "Yeah." It is clear that Rooney's interest is not with the "finer" points of novel writing (too often one has to suspend disbelief here; the above criticisms can be applied to Rooney's first novel, "Conversations With Friends"). That said, the on-again/off-again relationship of the central male and female characters is beautifully done (quite gripping, really) . . . and it is for THAT reason that the book is worth reading.Try to read past the book's flaws; it's worth the effort. It's hard to imagine I'd need to recommend this book to anyone who has already read Sally's first novel, Conversations with Friends. Her ability to capture the deeply intimate thoughts and motivations of her characters with an economy of language is masterful. As a consequence ones familiarity with the characters grows almost exponentially as you begin reading – although with a shock she reminds you almost at any time that really – just as in real life – you don't really know other people. They can do the most unexpected and 'out of character' things. And it's not because they're fictional, it's because people, the people you meet in the street, your sister, your lover – whoever – are – in spite of the intimacies you may share are actually totally separate people with their own histories, characters, thoughts and desires that can be so foreign to your own as to be utterly unfathomable. People, in spite of their pretensions, are frail, needy, rarely self-contained. Such things are never more obvious than in the relationships we dare to pursue with other people. I picked up this book after a slew of friends and all of Instagram has recommended me this book! I was so excited to get into it, because this book seemed to have such a dedicated following. But as I worked my way through this book, I found myself completely disappointed. This book never arrives to that "aha!" moment. It drags on in a dizzying spell of break up and make up sex, petty jealousy, and never arrives anywhere. It has a few redemptive qualities, such as character development and the way of staying true to Irish culture. But at the end of the book, I thought to myself – "well that was a waste of time." This was the most confusing book I've ever read! I had to go back and read the ending 3 times before I could figure out what happened, and I'm still unsure about who Leo actually is. This adaption is great! It includes the main punts without including some of the facts that may not be something some people want to read. It has a few curse words in it, where as the regular book has many many curse words in it. They are both good reading but just beware. I would definitely go with young adult or mature teen on this book. The regular one is definitely adult reading. All of the stuff in the book is true. All of the stuff you would imagine happening in a war, happened to Louie or he saw it, basically…. The title of this book drew me in, but as I turned the pages the plot got better and better. Yes, most of what happens here I never saw coming, but it reads like real life, things you really don't know about another person. Once you finish the book, which really didn't take me long, I had to have answers, make sure you read the author's notes. Yes, sadly it is based on a true story, not the actual story, but I could see how the author used parts of it and then the reality of what happened through the eyes of the writer became even clearer. This one becomes a compelling page turner, and pulls in a lot of different areas, and how they all pulled together, you don't want to miss this one! I've been reading Sarah Dessen since I was twelve years old and, till date, I find something so understated with her writing that I can't help but falling in love every time. Of course, there are some books I enjoy more than the others, but they are all great reads nonetheless. I wasn't sure if I should read The Rest of the Story – I haven't enjoyed her last few books (Once and for All and Saint Anything) as much as I enjoyed the masterpieces that were Just Listen, The Truth About Forever and This Lullaby, but when a trusted book fairy recommended it, and said that she loved it JUST as much as my top three, I knew I had to give this one a chance. The Rest of the Story reminded me of the Sarah Dessen of Old (a little bit of Along for the Ride and a tiny sprinkle of The Truth About Forever) and while I REALLY ENJOYED reading it, I just can't classify it in the magical range that I would for my top three. THINGS I LIKED: 1. EMMA/ SAYLOR AND THE FAMILY: This really reminded me of The Truth About Forever and the whole family. I loved Emma's mom's extended lake family, the familiarity and even the friction between them. 2. THE ROMANCE WAS ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE, OKAY? 3. I think Emma/ Saylor's stepmom was one of the coolest characters in the book. I LOVE that she was supportive of Emma/ Saylor, stepped back when she didn't need to be the parent in charge and encouraged Emma's dad to be better. THINGS I WISH HAD BEEN BETTER: 1. I feel like Emma's mom's mental health wasn't dealt with properly. I can't pinpoint what exactly, but the rep just felt lacking overall. 2. I don't normally write reviews, but I felt like this book needed one. After 2020 and everything that has happened I've been thinking a lot about how to navigate life and the bad that's thrown at you. I feel like this is a really fantastic book to read to shed perspective. Rather than getting hung up on the bad, noticing the good and just living in the now can be quite remarkable. Learning to live without regrets had been a big part of helping me be more content. I would definitely recommend people to read this book, no matter what genre you normally prefer. Again, Matt Haig has crafted another tale of philosophical brilliance. While The Midnight Library wasn't what I expected, it was still interwoven with sci-fi, fantasy elements and a fascinating premise. There were quite a few life lessons throughout the book about letting go of regrets and truly seeing and appreciating the life you are given. The character growth and world building were well done and the ending was satisfactory. Overall, I understand the message behind the library and the multiverse scenarios, but I didn't totally connect with the story. It is possible that I had different expectations prior to reading The Midnight Library. Even so, the author did create a compelling work of fiction that no doubt many will enjoy. While this book may not have been my cup of tea, Matt Haig is an excellent writer and this one is definitely worth reading.MELISSA

Not the best acting, but it jump started both of the young stars careers. I do like that they followed the book extremely well and it is a perfect companion to the book for the 5-6th graders who have to read it for class. It's definitely a sad story but such a great movie. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much watching this movie as a kid, because it's being main actors were young kids, with minimum acting experience at that time.aubrey.v

A girl named Leslie introduced herself to Jess and said 'I'm going to be your new neighbor! After Leslie won a race against the fastest boy in school they became friends. One day Leslie and Jess were racing into the woods and they saw a rope swing. Leslie said 'We should build a secret hide out and they called it Terabithia. Then a tragedy occurred. I enjoyed reading this book because it was a easy read. People that like reading about fantasy and adventure will like this book. By Erika Barneserikab
