20 Best 75 Gallon Power Vent Water Heater (2023 Update)

I replaced a 50 gallon heater with the new 75 gallon heater. The footprint is not that much bigger. So far it has worked 100% no problems. A friend of mine has the same water heater installed by app for over a year now and he loves it. When you look at what the cost is for the whole package it's a much better deal at going to a plumbing company. The best part about it is you have the ABT family name behind it. It comes with a six-year warranty and you know with one phone call to ABT they will be right on it.Buddy

My husband and I bought this but he passed in March. This water heater has been the pits. It use to turn its self down all the time and now it is going out all the time and I have to have someone come here and re-lite it for me because I can not do it. What a pain! I picked up the water heater I ordered which was in a taped up box with the corners in rough shape. When I got home and opened the box there was a big dent in the side of the heater. I think when an item has been previously returned in a taped up box, it is the stores responsibility to check it out for damages before restocking it and selling it to me. So back to the store I go to return it ( wasted time) and of course there are no more in stock. The plumber was coming the next day to install it, so I had to shop elsewhere to get the product I wanted. This has been my only disappointing experience so far at this store.Catlover

We've used our yellow top Vertex since 2010, and it's been great. Has cut our propane use from 300 gallons per year to around 125. Has more than paid for itself. Not sure if a natural gas version (with fuel price ~1/3 of propane) would do same. The only problem we've encountered is the frequent tripping of "blower prover alarm". Turns out to have simple solution: moisture condenses from intake air in the clear tubing hooked up to intake air line. Take tubing loose; blow out water; back in business. Arguably best home appliance I've yet purchased.Macko

Installed this unit 4 months ago at a 4-plex, replacing a 15yr old basic natural gas 75gallon unit. Just as advertised, it is able to replace the 75 gallon unit and then some. Admittedly, with only 4 month use, I don't have any history on reliability, but so far this great water heater has met or exceeded my expectations in all areas! It is able to keep up the hot water for my 4plex no problem, I have had no complaints from the tenants about hot water. For those of you with similar hot water demand, I would definitely recommend this unit for many reasons over standard tank heater or tankless. Some of my observations from my experience: – I am saving 25% on my gas bill – It is as easy to install as standard tank water heater, no increase needed in gas line (1/2" ok), and in my case of relocating the heater, I didn't have to install the metal exhaust pipe all the way up to roofline – fast recovery (mine typically cycles for 10 min – with temp setting at 120F and 11F differential) – Its easy to set the temp precisely with the digital display. In fact, since the display is connected by standard LAN cable, I removed the display from the heater unit, and moved it inside the house with a long LAN cable so I can program or check it easier – The only downside I have observed so far compared to standard tank unit is the purchase price, but the monthly savings may pay for itself over time To conserve energy, I like to set my hot water temperature a little lower than some – I set it just hot enough for the hottest shower that you may want. I set this unit for 120F, with a differential of 11F, which means the heater will kick on when it senses the water temp at 109F (120-11). I found this will allow anyone to take a hot shower, even those who like a really hot shower, but the 11F differential (compared with factory default of 5F) will allow for fewer cycles per day, which as others have noted should go a long way to help increase the long term reliability of the system, because it is not switching on and off so often which I believe is the biggest contributor to failures over time. In my case, for my fourplex, setting the temp at 120F with 11F differential, the display unit is reporting that it is cycling about 9 times per day for about 10 minutes per cycle, which seems to be a good balance for me, and saving me lots of money. Another note about the noise that some people have mentioned: it is louder than a standard tank, but not a lot louder, and the sound is just the "whooshing" sound of air being sucked into the intake, in my opinion not a very loud or annoying sound, but my unit is outside in a small shack. Overall, I am very happy and pleased to find such a efficient design out there that uses all of the heat provided by the burner with very little waste. It truly combines the best of both worlds of tank and tankless water heaters, without the downsides of tankless such as high installation cost and maintenance cost of scale buildup. Time will tell if this unit continues to be reliable, but liking it so far!Rich S

Very easy to order from Supplyhouse.com. 10 days later the truck arrived (without the lift gate I ordered but the driver helped load it onto a pickup truck, so all went well). Heater was strapped to a pallet and in perfect condition. I intend to use this heater both for household hot water and to supply a supplemental under floor heating system (not yet installed). It was very easy to install. There are 4 connections on the top of the unit and the layout does give enough room to work. I did use dielectric unions (per the manual) and the ones from Supply House were leak free! I installed a 2" concentric vent system through 14 inches of brink and block wall. The heater is on an outside wall so the length of the PVC pipe is a non-issue. Also installed a surge protector on the dedicated electric line as I read in a forum where a support engineer from AO Smith recommended it (although the manual only states using a clean electric line). Haven't looked into the iComm feature yet. I would prefer that AO Smith offered an open-source interface so we could integrate the heater into a home automation and control system. Bit silly to expect home owners to buy a support subscription just to have remote monitoring. Maybe I'll just have to hack it? I am pleasantly impressed how quiet the heater is. It heats very fast compared to the previous electric. It's only been running for 1 week so I can't comment on the gas usage or longevity of the product. So far, I'm quite pleased.Larry

First try damaged in shipping, SupplyHouse sent another unit out to us almost immediately. Good customer service! The water heater delivery was a day later than originally promised, and the delivery man would not go any further than my driveway. But I finally muscled this huge heater to the basement and was going to install it, but heard noises from the water heater, every time it was moved, which I finally figured was the flu baffle contacting the flu housing. I called Supply House but they could not tell me if this was an issue. I called Bradford White and they suggested I "have my contractor" take off the blower and inspect the flu baffle. I was concerned that I might void my warranty by doing so, but finally went ahead and I found the baffle was slightly out of place (apparently happened during shipment) and contacting the flu. So after repositioning the baffle, I installed the water heater. My vent piping had to be altered since Bradford White moved the location of the blower from the way it was on the old water heater, and the gas valve location also required some new piping, but when I plugged it in after installation, it came to life perfectly and we have hot water again! So I'm hoping I get 17 years out of this one. So far so good.Mark

It was nearly a drop in replacement for my previous Bradford White water heater, that was more than 15 years old. The last one probably could have lasted a few more years, but just finished the basement and didn’t want to take the risk. Works great, no complaints at all.John S.

Used in 5 bedroom 5 bath home. Ridiculously fast recovery time, lots and lots of hot water. Unlike smaller Bradford White heaters, this unit has a separate Anode that can be inspected and replaced. Also the brass drain valve is a ball-valve type, not the faucet kind. Very high quality heater. You feel you are getting your money's worth (unlike the ones in the big-box stores) Huge step up from previous heater. The only choice for a large home heater if you are not going to go tankless. Highly recommend professional installer–this thing is HEAVY, uses larger size pipes for both water and chimney. We replaced two 50 gallon Bradford white heaters (that the builder incorrectly put in series) and this single unit out performs many times over. Expansion tank is a must for this unit. We moved in somewhat recently and the 40 gallon hunk of junk that came with the place was on it's last leg. More than one person taking a shower back to back and it was game over. So annoying. 75 gallon seemed the logical choice in a household with 4 children, and my plumber, who I have grown to trust over years, was quite emphatic that this was the model to go with. After a couple of months now with this unit, he was right on target. It is seemingly impossible to run this tank dry, and we have tried. 3 showers running simultaneously, plus dishwasher and washing machine. It keeps on kicking out the hot water on point. It is so liberating to not to have to worry about hot water supply anymore. Of note to a person buying this is that it is both big and heavy. They had to remove the door to get it down in the basement and it took 4 people to carry it down the stairs. Sure this falls into the category of "not my problem" in my circumstance, but DIYers should keep this in mind. Also note that it requires 4'' exhaust as opposed to 3, which required some additional piping at my place. All of this being said, this unit is a beast thus far, assuming it remains reliable this unit is a home run.Chad

I have had the Noritz NR98 in for about 90 days and I am very pleased with its performance. I and my son installed the tankless water heater in about an hour and one half. I am not sure I could have done it by myself in the location I wanted. Having two people made it very easy to install. It does a great job of giving us hot water whenever we need it. Never run out and no variations in water temp when taking a shower and have other faucets on at the same time. Great appliance and fast, friendly service from the dealer.Al M.

Installed for roughly 3-months and have not experienced any problems. This water heater performs extremely well in our 1,200 s.f. home with 2 full bathrooms. Hot water is very reliable and flow capacity is perfect. Installation is a little complex. But I was able to do it myself by conducting proper research and viewing videos online. Exhaust duct required is very specific. So plan the proper vent kit according to your specific installation (roof or wall venting). I'm writing a point form review because I don't want to spend any more time on this very average water heater. We have two installed in different areas of our house and both behave identically, so it's not a "lemon" problem. 1. They both make a loud groaning noise when they fire up. I've tried everything – including increasing the gas pipe diameter and changing every setting I can – and still they groan. We may have to move one unit because it is disturbing a neighbor. 2. We wanted to use these as solar water backups. Once the inlet water falls below a certain temperature, they should kick in and maintain hot water. Nope; they don't fire up unless you increase the flow rate to a ridiculous level, eg full hot in the shower. Then you have to wait until they start and deliver hot water. Yes, flow rates during normal usage – eg, shower – are well within spec . This is the real deal-breaker. A fundamental design fault. Did anyone at Rinnai ever test these things? 3. They do NOT come with a controller. We knew this but figured we'd buy one, use it to set each unit up and then disconnect it. Nope; if you disconnect the controller, the unit reverts to non-controller settings. Dumb. 4. Totally agree that the manual is a joke. It's as if it was written only so that someone could tick a box and say, "Comes with a manual". (We also have two Rinnai FC810N vent free wall heaters and they also have inept manuals as well as having some crazy-stupid design faults such as a child proof lock that unlocks if the power goes out!) 5: Rinnai service is non-existent. They just say to contact a registered installer. There is ZERO support in any way for these things. 6. The mechanical build quality is quite high, very solid and good machine tolerances and finish. It's just a pity that the things don't work very well. In short, I would never buy another Rinnai product ever again. And this is after thinking that they were a good, solid Japanese brand I could depend on. Nope!Steve C

We decided to try a tankless water heater when our traditional unit stopped working, and chose Rinnai based on the great ratings and advice from a friend who performs installations. It's been installed for about 2 months. We've been thrilled with our purchase! I like that the unit is small and is mounted way up on the wall. Our utility room seems much larger without the big traditional water heater. It's pretty quiet when it's running. It takes a few seconds for the hot water to reach the tap, but we've adjusted to that. Initially the unit couldn't be set higher than 120 degrees F, but I was able to open the cover and flip the switch so I could set it higher. We've never run out of hot water since we installed the unit. I would certainly recommend a Rinnai unit. It's solidly built and a very good value.HuskyMom4949

It took me a little time to install because it was in the attic and I wanted to make sure I installed it correctly! It has been 3 weeks now and no problems. It comes with great warranty! I do think if my other hot water heater goes out I'm going to give the tankless a shot because it is about 40 feet from attic door and it would hard to manage this beast that far away. Bought through Home Depot which does no stock the stainless steel venting nor the required 3/4 inch flex gas line. Very important to have a contractor install unit. Set temp. to max 140 degrees. Customer rep. said that we could have a quaified technician install a chip to mother board to increase temp. to 150 degrees. Gave a 2 star rating because of lack of information on required materials to install.Tuba

This heater has replaced my old regular heater (with a tank). In overall I'm happy with the upgrade, but the feelings are mixed. Pros: 1. It takes a way much less space in the garage. 2. It really saves fuel! My natural gas bill for the water heating has dropped by 2x times. 3. No problem with the exhausted hot water in the house early morning. You use as much as you need with no worries. Cons: 1. If you upgrade form a regular heater, the existing exhaust cannot be usable. You'll have to make new holes in your roof or wall. 2. The blower motor is very loud. Even when feeding just one shower this device makes a lot of noise. 3. It takes time for the heater to ramp-up. In average it's about 20-30 seconds in the closest bathroom. 4. The heater has troubles adapting to the water flow. You'll have to spend about 5 minutes playing with the faucet before getting the right temperature. And if anyone else in the house enables a major hot water consumer, this game restarts. 5. This device has a drain line, which produces a substantial amount of condensate. You cannot just drop it on the floor. So, you'll need a drain line, and it cannot be a closed one (like the line from the washer). In my setup I've installed a condensate pump and attached it to the HVAC drain line (see the image).IgorZ

After a lot of trouble getting a unit that was not totally damaged (still some) in shipping, this unit has been working great for about a week of use now.It does take a bit longer than a tank heater to get hot water to the faucet (more than I expected), but overall it was worth the trade. We have 7 in our household and a 50 gallon water heater did not make it through for everyone to get hot showers/baths. I anticipate saving $50/month going from an electric tank heater to this natural gas tankless, but my plumber thinks it will be closer to $100/month in utilities savings. My plumber's tankless heater has been working in his personal home for over 17 years and still going strong. If we get the savings and the longevity, this will be a significant savings over the long haul. This tankless unit hangs up on the wall and freed up enough space in our laundry/utility room for us to be able to install a huge shelving unit which was a very nice bonus. And the room looks so neat and tidy now too without a water heater sitting on the floor taking up so much space.One other benefit we have noticed. About 3 years ago we installed a water softener in our house. It did make a tremendous difference, but after installing this tankless water heater the difference was even more dramatic than after the initial installation of the water softener. I suspect the old tank water heater was so full of mineral deposits that after treating the water with the softener, the water would then pick up minerals while going through the hot water heater. My plumber agrees. Either way the water has never been so "slick" in our house as it is after installing the tankless water heater (feels like you didn't even get the soap rinsed off it's so slippery). We are definitely enjoying not running out of hot water especially with guests staying at our home. Looking forward to the utility savings and a long lasting water heater that hopefully doesn't fail around that 5-10 year mark as is typical with tank style water heaters.Brandon M.

The Rinnai water heater works well and saves energy but there are some issues that are specific to these water heaters and I am going to tell you the whole truth. Venting: The exhaust/combustion air vent is tested and listed for the unit and you can’t use any other vent. It uses outside air for combustion and is very safe. The direct vent sealed combustion vent allows Rinnai to be installed in bath rooms and bed rooms where traditional B-Vent water heaters cannot. There are limitations of how far away and were you can terminate the vent, check out the installation manual for that. Hot Water: It will make endless hot water until you turn off the tap, a minute, an hour, a week. It can only supply so much at a time, depending on your cold water temperature it will only run two or three fixtures at once. It is an ‘on demand’ water heater, not an ‘instant’ water heater, hot water will take longer to arrive at the fixture than it will from a tank water heater. Gas Supply: These water heaters use less fuel than a tank style water heater but when they want fuel, they want it now. Your tank style water heater required a gas supply of about 40,000 btu’s per hour, your Rinnai will require 180 to 199,000 btu’s per hour. Check you gas supply lines to make sure they have enough capacity for the new load or your new water heater won’t perform to its potential without upgrading the supply line. Expect some maintenance: This is an energy saving, high tech machine with a combustion fan, pc board and electronic solenoid valves to control water and gas flow. Your water quality will also determine how often the unit will need to be flushed, generally every one or two years. Flushing is done by using a small pump to circulate a solution through the unit to dissolve calcium deposits that form inside the heat exchanger. You should flush a tank style water heater too but most people don’t. If you don’t flush your tank less water heater the efficiency will be reduced and you may get inconsistent water temperatures. In the worst case it could plug the heat exchanger or cause it to leak requiring replacement. Finding service: This point can be a little sticky. Rinnai’s warranty isn’t affected by internet purchases but your online retailer won’t be much help. Rinnai has an online dealer locater but if you haven’t purchased the appliance from that dealer it is a little like bringing your own steak to the restaurant, they may cook it for you but they won’t guarantee the results. Be prepared to pay the service man and fight Rinnai for reimbursement or buy locally. Hope this helps.ilubnewyork

We renovated our basement and converted from electric baseboard heat to hot water baseboard heat. There are 2 temperature settings on our unit (a Rinnai RU98i) : 160deg. and 185deg.. We normally run at the 160 setting but during real cold snaps we boost the temperature of the H2O to 185. Unfortunately at the higher setting the unit keeps misfiring and cutting out so I have to revert to the 160 setting. Have had service in several times about this but not very successfully. Frustrating on those days when you need the extra heat.NanuNanu

Rinnai has a great reputation and the two RUC80iN Tankless water heaters live up to it. Its been 2 weeks since installation and no issues with the units themselves. They do not produce instant hot water but it is continuous once it gets there. Negatives: Unit hums when running and vibrates slightly. Would recommend installing on an exterior wall if possible. Installed an add-on Watts recirculating pump and it helps to move the hot thru the recirc. line but I am having issues with the timing of the on/off cycles. Can be an expensive purchase – need to search for a good deal. Shipping box and protection is very minimal from Rinnai. Buy shipping insurance! Positives: Takes up very little room compared to a tank type water heater. Continuous hot water, easy to adjust temperature, ease of installation (weighs a lot less than a tank type).mtsi1

We have used Rinnai tankless heaters in our home since 2012 with no issues ever. Hot water is always available when needed. Energy bills are greatly reduced and no energy is used at all when not in use. The temperature is adjustable for various needs. We keep ours set at 115 deg F most of the time so as not to be a scalding issue. We increase it for hot water laundry needs. This on-demand water heater came with my house. It's our first one and I love it. I am an engineer and appreciate the efficiency of the design. A couple things to keep in mind – you MUST flush it regularly (I think yearly) especially if you have hard water. It's very easy to do. Typically people just ignore tank water heaters and usually they are OK, but from what I understand a tankless water heater will almost certainly fail after just a few years if it gets clogged up with mineral deposits. Another thing to keep in mind that if you lose power you will also lose hot water, but that's a pretty rare occurrence and the energy savings will easily pay for a small portable generator if you are worried about that.HoustonTX0539

I like the Rinnai tankless hot water heater very much. I live in Florida, they're no basements in Florida so storage space is a premium. You wouldn't think that a rather small conventional water heater takes up much space but you would be surprised. I'm very happy that I chose the wall mounted tankless Rinnai water heater just for that. I have had zero issues with the unit. As a professional home inspector, I have seen many different brands and I can confidently say that I find a lot less issues with the Rannai brand and believe me, with other manufactures, I see plenty of water leaks and component failures. Another plus is that these units have a much longer lifespan then the conventional hot water heater. As far as maintenance, they do need to be flushed once in awhile. Depending on your water quality, you may need to flush it annually due to scaling. Although, I believe Rannai has now incorporated a scaling checker device to help keep you informed about that. I have an oil burner that vents out the house. This power vent was very easy to install. You do need two people to do it. One on the inside of the house, and one on the outside of the house. My first one lasted almost 20 years. Hopefully this one will too. It was easy to order, came the next day like the company said it would and was in great condition.Liz

I purchased this Power Venter after the old one started failing a few weeks ago for about $40 less than the closest competitor. It was on my doorstep in just a couple of days. I installed it myself and my furnace tech who came out a week later for cleaning and tuning said it was a good product, being stainless steel and having sealed bearings. He said the install was perfect. I saved myself another couple hundred dollars doing it myself, it was easy and took me about 2 hours taking my time. I was nervous and had my doubts in the beinning of this project, but when it was over I was thoroughly proud of myself, so my wife pointed out after showing her my work. I purchased a home back in may of 2017 and after purchase realized the water heater chimney stack had been removed some time before. in removing, the natural draft water heater had no where to vent to. it was just venting into my basement. so my solution was to retro fit a side wall vent for it. tjurnlend came through with this product which is an excellent product. i purchased the unit which comes with everything you would need except the c or b vent runs. i installed in 3 hours, most of which was cutting a new 4 inch whole in my outside wall, the wall being almost 6 inches thick with old siding. the unit runs flawlessly as of now and is quiet to boot. im very happy with it, the water heater was only a month old when we bought the place and i did not want to get rid of it for a powervent water heater. so 280 bucks and 3 hours later thanks to tjurnlend i made my own power vent water heater. i would highly recomend this product. good construction, good quility and quiet.H.E.D.C.

I bought mine as an open box, so it was missing a few items, instructions, ect. (Got my instructions from the manufacture website) Key note, is that you need too mount the valve vertical, otherwise it won't work. (Don't let the picture in the instructions fool you. It shows the valve sideways. Needs to be up and down/Vertical) The motor has a lot of torque when starting and topping which causes the internal blades to hit the housing. I'm trying to work this out with some different mounting grommets. (Parts that we're missing). Really pricy for what it does, but it was the only option I could find, so I was sort of stuck.T.K.

Our 30 + yr old tankless died and we went out shopping for a replacement that we'd hoped to install ourselves. The Big Box hardware store was out of the Rheem model that we thought would fit our needs, so we began an online search and found CPO. We received the BEST in customer service and would not hesitate to buy from them again. That said, when the water heater arrived and my husband read the instructions, he realized he was in over his head, and we should call a plumber. We are quite pleased with the product and the strides that have been made in tankless water heating. We can shower and run the washing machine at the same time without any fluctuation in temp. The unit is compact and thanks to a local plumber installed to perfection!Susan

The product was installed a week ago tomorrow so I' not sure this is a very conclusive review. Might be better to ask for a review six months from now. I trust the name Rheem and thus far I like my new water heater.Mr Bill 1231

This is my first experience with Rheem direct flow water heater and I really like it! It provides all of the hot water I want when I want it. The response time has been impressive.Razor

Purchased this propane 540 unit after doing a ton of research on all tankless models out there. I am a contractor by trade so I do my due diligence. I have a large family, wife and 4 girls at home. I was out of hot water every day (50g tank). I often run 2 showers at once and dishwasher. Ok so now to the tankless unit. Over all it rates at about 11 stars for me. This unit is near silent. Just a small humming sound. I have it set to the max temp of 150 (max 160) I am just amazed at the amount of hot water it provides, it doesnt even make sense to me. I have direct pex piping from the water Manifold to each hot water outlet. Just put of curiosity I ran 2 showers 3 faucets at hot with dishwasher on. All had hot water and pressure. I should also mention that I am in Philadelphia so our ground water temp is between 50 and 55. Thats 100 degrees rise. The girls at home are happy so I am happy. Great unit.Arsen A.

This product came on time and undamaged. Installation wasn't difficult. Had a plumber friend help me. Works great so far. Haven't had any trouble with it. Has been running flawlessly for about a week now. Takes up a lot less space than a water tank. Does create condensation so has to be drained somewhere. I used a condensate pump to drain to my utility sink about 40' away.Rob

Unit works as described. Shipped quickly. It was alittle shorter than the original, but easily fixed with a $2 piece of pipe. No more noisy power vent! I can sleep again!Steve

Matched old unit perfectly. Old unit lasted 17 years fan rusted off motor. I hope this one lasts as long. On the down side took along time to recieve.D.D.
