1. Grant [Book]

Product Details:
The #1 new york times bestseller and new york times book review 10 best books of 2017“eminently readable but thick with import . . . grant hits like a mack truck of knowledge.” —ta-nehisi coates, the atlanticpulitzer prize winner ron chernow returns with a sweeping and dramatic portrait of one of our most compelling generals and presidents, ulysses s. ulysses s. grant's life has typically been misunderstood. all too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman, or as the triumphant but brutal union general of the civil war. but these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as chernow shows in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency. before the civil war, grant was flailing. his business ventures had ended dismally, and despite distinguished service in the mexican war he ended up resigning from the army in disgrace amid recurring accusations of drunkenness. but in war, grant began to realize his remarkable potential, soaring through the ranks of the union army, prevailing at the battle of shiloh and in the vicksburg campaign, and ultimately defeating the legendary confederate general robert e. lee. along the way, grant endeared himself to president lincoln and became his most trusted general and the strategic genius of the war effort. grant’s military fame translated into a two-term presidency, but one plagued by corruption scandals involving his closest staff members. more important, he sought freedom and justice for black americans, working to crush the ku klux klan and earning the admiration of frederick douglass, who called him “the vigilant, firm, impartial, and wise protector of my race.” after his presidency, he was again brought low by a dashing young swindler on wall street, only to resuscitate his image by working with mark twain to publish his memoirs, which are recognized as a masterpiece of the genre. with lucidity, breadth, and meticulousness, chernow finds the threads that bind these disparate stories together, shedding new light on the man whom walt whitman described as “nothing heroic… and yet the greatest hero.” chernow’s probing portrait of grant's lifelong struggle with alcoholism transforms our understanding of the man at the deepest level. this is america's greatest biographer, bringing movingly to life one of our finest but most underappreciated presidents. the definitive biography, grant is a grand synthesis of painstaking research and literary brilliance that makes sense of all sides of grant's life, explaining how this simple midwesterner could at once be so ordinary and so extraordinary.named one of the best books of the year by goodreads – amazon – the new york times – newsday – bookpage – barnes and noble – wall street journal

Reviews:
This book single handedly is responsible for sparking in me the urge to take an explosive amount of action to increase my income. I have in the past worked my behind off, went to college and did everything my family/friends told me to do but I never made enough money or reached the levels I wanted. I am not their yet but I started a business November 2017 and made $25,000 within 30 days. Today February 2018 I am making the most I have ever made in a single month, $45,000 profit. All i use is the 10X mentality and principals. I even play the audiobook in my car every day. THANK YOU GRANT CARDONE! God bless you, your family and your family legacy for centuries!Rubin R.
The 10X rule is vital to the obtainment of success; regardless of how you define success, you must operate at 10X levels. The 10X Rule gives you detailed guidelines of what you must do and also what you are going to encounter on your path to success. It prepares you for the struggles and hardships that come on the road to success, which will allow you to accurately set goals that will ensure your success. The 10X Rule will change how you approach your goals and ultimately change the way you think and operate. I personally bought the audiobook first and listened to it multiple times (which I recommend) then I felt it necessary to purchase the book and read also. I found that you get more of Grant’s programs by listening to the audiobooks and reading the book also. You must SWIM IN THE COOL-AID!! #10XPreston P.
I got this book because my manager is increasing our target instead of action. They have lost respect I had left of them for accusing me of why the restaurant is broke when Its COVID’s fault. I stopped creating my music when I took my recovery serious. Now I would like to quit my negative job atmosphere and do what I am here to do, make music. I procrastinate, dont set goals right and I’m not good at taking action to achieve my goal because of the negative tyrant in my mind. Well I would like to focus on my dreams. I had a feeling this book would help me with what I don’t know. There is so much wisdom and I didn’t read 40 pages yet. Thanks Grant Cardone! I love it. Everyone should read this even if they’re not an entrepreneur.Tucker S.

I did a lot of research AFTER buying the original translation, which was almost impossible to get through. The Lyons translation flows so smoothly and is so enjoyable, I can now read it with pleasure and remember my childhood when I was first introduced to 1001 Nights.SavvyShopper915

This is a very beautiful and “essential” edition of Arabian Nights, by Penguin. It is all that you need: epic fantasy, love at first sight, intrigue, djinns and teletransportation!!Hassan Iz
5. Change: How To Make Big Things Happen [Book]

Product Details:
How to create the change you want to see in the world using the paradigm-busting ideas in this "utterly fascinating" (adam grant) big-idea book. the problem is that the world they describe is a world where information spreads, but beliefs and behaviors stay the same. the real story of social change is more complex.
Reviews:
This book has confirmed my view that celebrities won't sell an idea or a product. It puts rigour around how we as humans influence, change and adapt. Humans and our systems of behaviour are complex and nuanced which this books unravels. The book could benefit from chapter summaries of key points. Some of the theory seems contradictory and a distillation of the most important points would make the book more approachable to a casual reader.Matt
"Change" is complementary to principles of human behavior described in other books, including Yuval Harari's "Sapiens" and Jonathan Haidt's "The Righteous Mind." Damen Centola does an excellent job of making the mechanisms behind social change approachable and useful. We have launched new marketing initiatives for my company based on the concepts he describes.Eugene

7. Fearless: The Undaunted Courage And Ultimate Sacrifice Of Navy Seal Team Six Operator Adam Brown [Book]

Product Details:
Fearless takes you deep into seal team six, straight to the heart of one of its most legendary operators. when navy seal adam brown woke up on march 17, 2010, he didn't know he would die that night in the hindu kush mountains of afghanistan–but he was ready: in a letter to his children, not meant to be seen unless the worst happened, he wrote, "i'm not afraid of anything that might happen to me on this earth, because i know no matter what, nothing can take my spirit from me." long before adam brown became a member of the elite seal team six–the counterterrorism unit that took down osama bin laden–he was a fun-loving country boy from hot springs, arkansas, whose greatest goal had been to wear his high school's football jersey. an undersized daredevil, prone to jumping off roofs into trees and off bridges into lakes, adam was a kid who broke his own bones but would never break a promise to his parents. but after high school, adam fell in with the wrong crowd, and his family watched as his appetite for risk dragged him into a downward spiral that eventually landed him in jail. battling his inner demons on a last-chance road to redemption, adam had one goal: to become the best of the best–a u.s. an absorbing chronicle of heroism and humanity, fearless presents an indelible portrait of a highly trained warrior who would enter a village with weapons in hand to hunt terrorists, only to come back the next day with an armload of shoes and meals for local children. it is a deeply personal, revealing glimpse inside the seal team six brotherhood that also shows how these elite operators live out the rest of their lives, away from danger, as husbands, fathers, and friends. fearless is the story of a man of extremes, whose courage and determination was fueled by faith, family, and the love of a woman. it's about a man who waged a war against his own worst impulses and persevered to reach the top tier of the u.s. military. always the first to volunteer for the most dangerous assignments, adam's final act of bravery led to the ultimate sacrifice. adam brown was a devoted man who was an unlikely hero but a true warrior, described by all who knew him as fearless.

Reviews:
This book is awesomely creepy. It starts off with just enough of a glimpse of the monsters- not nearly enough to give things away, but enough to scare you. I'm not usually a huge reader of horror, though I do like some older Stephen King books. The beginning of this book made me want to sleep with the lights on. There is a fair amount of setup before the main events of the story begin, but I enjoyed getting to know many of the characters before the ship set sale. I wish we'd seen some of the others before their arrival- while backstories are given for most of them, I'd have liked to see a little more, particularly from the points of view of the Deaf scientists and their sister. I liked the dynamic of the three of them. Once the main action starts, it really doesn't stop. The author does a good job of building the suspense, and I truly wondered if all of my favorite characters would survive. There is a prequel to this book, a novella called "Rolling In The Deep." I read "Into The Drowning Deep" first, and I'd recommend that reading order, since the prequel is itself the story of the previous voyage, and answers the questions the crew has in this book. "Into The Drowning Deep" was my first Mira Grant book, and ranks right up there with the Newsflesh series as one of my favorites. I've heard rumors of a potential sequel in the works, and I hope that pans out. This book works as a stand-alone, but there is enough left hanging for a plausible follow up.Christine
This is my second copy after passing around my original copy to friends and family with rave results. I have so enjoyed the horror and the truly interesting relationships in the story. Is a stand alone book but there is a previous book that can be read but it is not necessary. Enjoy a good scary read that can be read again and again.mtoolson1

Reviews:
Another excellent read from Ben Aaronovitch. It was delivered very quickly, thank you.
An interesting continuation of the Peter Grant series. Seemed to be more of the old-school Peter Grant mysteries. To be clear, I like how not all of these books are exactly the same structure, or at least they have their own vibes, but I also like getting back to more of the earlier series vibes as well, only with the satisfaction of Peter having grown into his power more, being more experienced and sure of himself.Bookworm Jim
Amongst Our Weapons is the ninth book in the Rivers Of London series by best-selling British author, Ben Aaronovitch. When DC Peter Grant is called to the London Silver Vaults, he brings along his Special Assessment Unit trainee, DC Danni Wickford. Witnesses describe a flash of light before David Moore falls down dead, with a neat hole in his chest, and his heart scooped out. No vestigia, though. Moore was at the silversmith demanding the return of a silver puzzle ring his ex-wife had sold, but not to this silversmith, apparently. Althea Moore still has it, a strange thing that unfolds and is inscribed with different languages and symbols, and is definitely enchanted. David's flat does have vestigia and strange marks scratched into the front door. Phone records send Grant, Wickford and DS Sahra Guleed to the home of David's uni friend, Preston Carmichael. And that's when things start repeating: door markings, another ring (missing), a scooped-out heart, vestigia. Soon the SAU are tracking down members of a group from a quarter of a century earlier, people who believed they were touched by the Holy Spirit. And somewhere in the mix, a warning from a former associate Peter would rather not see, a stolen lamp that contained quite the opposite of a genie, and traces of the Sons of Wayland and their smithing tradition. A trip to Manchester, the old stomping ground of DCI Alex Seawoll, is undertaken. The SAU need to find an important archive, hidden during the war, but before any information is forthcoming, Peter is required to facilitate path out for a contingent of wartime ghosts. All this, while Beverly is on the verge of giving birth to twins, and would really prefer that Peter stays close to home. River spirits, talking foxes, diggers in the backyard, a Goblin Fair that needs a permanent home, a brush with a Spanish Inquisitor, FBI liaisons, and a fiery angel on a mission: Peter has to juggle a lot of balls while trying to sort this one out. Twice, his life is saved by the person he least expects, and Thomas proposes radical action to curb the recklessness of the new father. As always, quirky and clever with snappy dialogue and plenty of black humour: just marvellous!! 10. Grant And Twain: The Story Of An American Friendship [Book]

Product Details:
In the spring of 1884 ulysses s. grant heeded the advice of mark twain and finally agreed to write his memoirs. little did grant or twain realize that this seemingly straightforward decision would profoundly alter not only both their lives but the course of american literature. over the next fifteen months, as the two men became close friends and intimate collaborators, grant raced against the spread of cancer to compose a triumphant account of his life and times—while twain struggled to complete and publish his greatest novel, adventures of huckleberry finn. – in this deeply moving and meticulously researched book, veteran writer mark perry reconstructs the heady months when grant and twain inspired and cajoled each other to create two quintessentially american masterpieces. – in a bold and colorful narrative, perry recounts the early careers of these two giants, traces their quest for fame and elusive fortunes, and then follows the series of events that brought them together as friends. the reason grant let twain talk him into writing his memoirs was simple: he was bankrupt and needed the money. twain promised grant princely returns in exchange for the right to edit and publish the book—and though the writer’s own finances were tottering, he kept his word to the general and his family. – mortally ill and battling debts, magazine editors, and a constant crush of reporters, grant fought bravely to get the story of his life and his civil war victories down on paper. twain, meanwhile, staked all his hopes, both financial and literary, on the tale of a ragged boy and a runaway slave that he had been unable to finish for decades. as perry delves into the story of the men’s deepening friendship and mutual influence, he arrives at the startling discovery of the true model for the character of huckleberry finn. – with a cast of fascinating characters, including general william t. sherman, william dean howells, william henry vanderbilt, and abraham lincoln, perry’s narrative takes in the whole sweep of a glittering, unscrupulous age. a story of friendship and history, inspiration and desperation, genius and ruin, grant and twain captures a pivotal moment in the lives of two towering americans and the age they epitomized.

12. The Deepest South Of All: True Stories From Natchez, Mississippi [Book]

Product Details:
Bestselling travel writer richard grant “sensitively probes the complex and troubled history of the oldest city on the mississippi river through the eyes of a cast of eccentric and unexpected characters” (newsweek). natchez, mississippi, once had more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in america, and its wealth was built on slavery and cotton. today it has the greatest concentration of antebellum mansions in the south, and a culture full of unexpected contradictions. prominent white families dress up in hoopskirts and confederate uniforms for ritual celebrations of the old south, yet natchez is also progressive enough to elect a gay black man for mayor with 91% of the vote. much as john berendt did for savannah in midnight in the garden of good and evil and the hit podcast s-town did for woodstock, alabama, so richard grant does for natchez in the deepest south of all. with humor and insight, he depicts a strange, eccentric town with an unforgettable cast of characters. there’s buzz harper, a six-food-five gay antique dealer famous for swanning around in a mink coat with a uniformed manservant and a very short german bodybuilder. there’s ginger hyland, “the lioness,” who owns 500 antique eyewash cups and decorates 168 christmas trees with her jewelry collection. interwoven through these stories is the more somber and largely forgotten account of abd al rahman ibrahima, a west african prince who was enslaved in natchez and became a cause célèbre in the 1820s, eventually gaining his freedom and returning to africa. with an “easygoing manner” (geoff dyer, national book critics circle award–winning author of otherwise known as the human condition), this book offers a gripping portrait of a complex american place, as it struggles to break free from the past and confront the legacy of slavery.
