7. Basic Human Anatomy: An Essential Visual Guide For Artists [Book]

Product Details:
A comprehensive, yet flexible and holistic approach to the human body for artists, roberto osti’s method of teaching anatomy is exhaustive, but never loses sight of the fact that this understanding should lead to the creation of art. basic human anatomy teaches artists the simple yet powerful formula artists have used for centuries to draw the human figure from the inside out. osti, using the basic system of line, shape, and form used by da vinci, raphael, and michelangelo, takes readers step-by-step through all the lessons needed in order to master this essential foundation skill. organized progressively, the book shows readers how to replicate the underlying structure of the body using easy-to-understand scales and ratios; conceptualize the front and side views of the skeleton with basic shapes; add detail with simplified depictions of complex bones and joints; draw a muscle map of the body with volumetric form and realistic dimension; master the feet, hands, and skull to create realistic renderings of the human form; and apply a deeper knowledge of anatomy to finished drawings for more impact.
Reviews:
I call this a 'soft' anatomy book – in fact, a great 'soft' anatomy reference. The diagrams are very well done, they relay all the information one would hope for if wanting to learn the names of muscles and bones in the body. It is a reference book dedicated to the human form. As mentioned, the diagrams (drawings) are 'soft' in their nature – soft rendering, shading and detailed. They are not of an 'artistic' nature (and the book never claimed to be that). It is a beautifully presented reference book and much (in fact, all) can be learned from this book about the structure of the human body and how different parts connect. It has certainly gained a spot on my shelf of human anatomy reference books.Fabio

An intimate look at how God sees youANGELIA
The book is a good size, font is not too small and the content is very "no-nonsense". It just explains the necessary anatomy and physiology(functions) of body parts and systems; it is a quick reference that can act as a solid basic foundation to medical/nursing knowledge. The cover of book is cut a little short at the edge of pages, and the page quality is one you do not want to get wet. However, the content is still superb and would recommend to anyone wanting to brush up on their foundational knowledge! 🙂Tina

Yes, I still paid just under $100 for this textbook. Brand new though, the bound style textbook is way much more! It is all the same pages that the actual bound textbook has, but in two separate 3-ring binders. 1 is smaller than the other. I start this A&P class in mid-Jan., but I really feel like this book in the "a la carte" style will definitely help me bcs I will be able to just take the chapters needed as they're needed. Less weight! The pages and the binders are all also in excellent condition! I will be looking for future books this a la carte way!jlafon0416

Reviews:
Brilliant book highly recommend it A*eva1234ozzy
It is a nice large book with decent paper quality. The pages aren’t quite as thick as the Loomis reprints but still good. I would say about the same as the previous Bammes book Complete Guide to Life Drawing that Search press printed just with what seems to be a much better binding as I would expect from a more pricey hardcover. I not too far into the book so far but it seems to be a thorough coverage of anatomy with an abundance of illustrations and photos that convey useful information clearly. I am quite liking that it give a good bit of coverage to anatomy in motion. Where as the book Complete Guide to Life Drawing mostly gave little bullet points of essential info and observations along with some exercises this book goes in more in depth on each area explaining things better and giving more of Bammes personal insight.Rian
The most engrossing and beautiful depictions of human anatomy I've found in one book. Excellent visual and written reference material for drawing or sculpture. The author has a masterful understanding of human anatomy and it can be a very challenging and time consuming study to comprehend the level of sophistication that is the human form, but it's well worth the effort. I cannot recommend it highly enough.catsforhands

Very interesting love the book Grey's Anatomy by Henry Graycynbro_9901
I really like this edition. I have another Gray's Anatomy book, but the print was so small that it was hard to read. This is so much better and has more content. Beautiful leather bound edition. So glad I bought it!wisdomsway
Very comprehensive, but the quality of this paperback is quite poor. The illustrations are difficult to see and the writing on the illustrations is very hard to read, but it is a cheap paperback edition so you get what you pay for I suppose.amej40

Reviews:
I was forced to buy this book for a class. It's quite convoluted in it's layout, oftentimes the artwork is either poorly presented, or distant from the references in the text. I'm very disappointed in the presentation of the cardiac cycle. It starts with diastole and reverses the sounds of the heart in the text. It's either wrong or inconsistent with other texts and common knowledge.brocktoon
I actually really like this text. While I have more experience with the longer "Moore's Clinical Anatomy" text, I love using this to teach my allied health students. I personally appreciate the images and descriptions. I feel like it is a nice intermediate choice between some of the less explicit texts and Gray's. One final note. I co-taught a course where this was not the required text. I often used diagrams from Moore's to help struggling students and they all had the same feedback: "Why isn't this our text?".anatprof1984
Great book for PT school. It’s not overly complicated and the application boxes are very helpful!Sydney

I love the thoroughness and the colorfulness of this book. Sometimes it goes into too much detail, but it is very well organized.Lenses
This book is very thorough but also pretty dry. It's pictures are not as entertaining as other books I have used.philip9418
