Reviews:
Loved it. As someone who doesn't know much about Greek mythology, this was an easily digestible way to learn. Fry's writing style keeps you engaged, and prevents the topic feeling dry. Definitely worth a read – you won't want to put it down.Kara
I am certainly not a Classical scholar yet I found Mythos surprisingly easy and enjoyable to read even though I will always struggle to remember many of the names of the Ancient Gods and lesser deities involved. Mr Fry's sense of humour shines through and breathes life into these ancient myths while remaining true to the key themes of the originals.Michael S.
Talk About History Repeating. Ever want to know the woman's name that is still used today when studying Earth Sciences? How about how the River Nile got its or who the planet is named after, the body part that a vengeful son cut from his father that not only caused everything beautiful on Earth but how the act set into motion a curse that one day a civilization will come along and unleash his destructive wrath? One so deadly that has not only been discovered but actually used thousands of years AFTER the Greeks first recorded the story. Brilliantly written (and recorded on audiobook) by the incredibly talented British actor (Several Seasons Of BONES), author, director, broadcaster & comedian Stephen Fry, those stories are broken down, by Mr. Fry using his unique wit and the people, Gods and monsters who recorded and believed them. He also points out the inconsistencies, hilarity, and irony behind everything from a father swallowing his newborns whole, how siblings populated the world, what was Pandora's Box and more. For people who don't think there is any irony in the book, I'll quote my favorite animated character, Sterling Archer, view on the word, "This is like O. Henry and Alanis Morissette had a baby and named it this exact situation." (book in the case of this review)". I have already ordered the other 2 books in the series, "Hero's" and "Troy".AustinManix

Robert Graves has done an excellent job of collating the stories of Greek mythology. There are so many fantastic elements to these stories: adventure, love, lust, virtue, battle, heroism, and of course, the supernatural beings. 6. Greek Tragedies 1: Aeschylus: Agamemnon, Prometheus Bound; Sophocles: Oedipus The King, Antigone; Euripides: Hippolytus [Book]

Product Details:
Greek tragedies, volume i contains aeschylus’s “agamemnon,” translated by richmond lattimore; aeschylus’s “prometheus bound,” translated by david grene; sophocles’s “oedipus the king,” translated by david grene; sophocles’s “antigone,” translated by elizabeth wyckoff; and euripides’s “hippolytus,” translated by david grene. sixty years ago, the university of chicago press undertook a momentous project: a new translation of the greek tragedies that would be the ultimate resource for teachers, students, and readers. they succeeded. under the expert management of eminent classicists david grene and richmond lattimore, those translations combined accuracy, poetic immediacy, and clarity of presentation to render the surviving masterpieces of aeschylus, sophocles, and euripides in an english so lively and compelling that they remain the standard translations. today, chicago is taking pains to ensure that our greek tragedies remain the leading english-language versions throughout the twenty-first century. in this highly anticipated third edition, mark griffith and glenn w. most have carefully updated the translations to bring them even closer to the ancient greek while retaining the vibrancy for which our english versions are famous. this edition also includes brand-new translations of euripides’ medea, the children of heracles, andromache, and iphigenia among the taurians, fragments of lost plays by aeschylus, and the surviving portion of sophocles’s satyr-drama the trackers. new introductions for each play offer essential information about its first production, plot, and reception in antiquity and beyond. in addition, each volume includes an introduction to the life and work of its tragedian, as well as notes addressing textual uncertainties and a glossary of names and places mentioned in the plays. in addition to the new content, the volumes have been reorganized both within and between volumes to reflect the most up-to-date scholarship on the order in which the plays were originally written. the result is a set of handsome paperbacks destined to introduce new generations of readers to these foundational works of western drama, art, and life.
Reviews:
This product was a high-quality print, reads well, and feels good in your hands. The one-page introduction to each play was very handy and interesting. The only thing that I feel the book could have used would be a small glossary of words at the back. I would recommend this for a friend had I any that were even a little interested in reading Greek tragedies.Great Books Reader

One commentator on Fagles' Iliad said, (favorably)that it read like a script for The Sopranos. I think I know what he meant but for me Fagles saw the War for Troy like the bar fight it represented itself to be and his translation demonstrates it. The first word in Greek in Menon–Rage–not Sing as nearly every translation since Chapman has rendered the line. That's just how it was. Achilles emotion was rage. After that initial introduction, it's fasten your seatbelts, folks; Troy is about to fall.texasrefugee
Gift for friend. They loved it.ASHLEY
Nearly three thousand years after they were composed, The Iliad and The Odyssey remain two of the most celebrated and widely read stories ever told, yet next to nothing is known about their composer. He was certainly an accomplished Greek bard, and he probably lived in the late eighth and early seventh centuries b.c. Authorship is traditionally ascribed to a blind poet named Homer, and it is under this name that the works are still published. Greeks of the third and second centuries b.c., however, already questioned whether Homer existed and whether the two epics were even written by a single individual.codeguy777

Simplifies in a fun way, a very difficult language!readmeoutloud
Out of the blue, I decided I wanted to read the Iliad in ancient Greek. I went through all the web links looking for information and I stumbled across this book "Learn Ancient Greek" by Peter Jones. The Jones book promised to get you up and running quickly with basic ancient Greek without the usual stumbling blocks of grammer and syntax. Since I own my own business, I don't have a lot of free time. Whatever time I could set aside for my new interest would be fairly circumscribed, and at fifty years old I didn't want to lose interest because I wasn't seeing any progress, which I thought would be likely if I went with one of the thick textbook volumes I perused at the bookstores and online. Once I decided upon the Jones book, I couldn't find it anywhere. Happily, an eBay search turned up an edition at a good price, so I bid and won and soon enough I had the book in my hands. So far, it has proved to be everything it promised to be and more. The material is presented in an easy to comprehend style with clarity and even comedy! Just as advertised, in short order the pupil is mastering the Greek alphabet and learning to competently pronounce words and short phrases. (A pronunciation tape is available directly from the author, which I ordered shortly after receiving the book, which helps keep the ambigiuous vowels on track. The tape is not required but it is nice to have.) Professors of Greek language might turn their noses up at Jones' style, which takes a back door approach to learning the language, but I have always felt that any language (even an ancient one!) should be learned as if you are stepping off a boat to a strange country and want to ask how to get to the market. This is just the route Jones leads you down and it is rewarding. I was thrilled to be able to successfully read words of a Greek postage stamp from a postcard I received. I think that once I master the basics with the Jones book, I will invest in a more thorough academic course, but by then my fundemental skills will be such that I will have the patience — and the interest — to pursue the grammer! Stan Prager (PS — Please note that your title of this review states the author's name incorrectly. He is Peter, not Brian W. Jones!)garp83

Great book! Bought it for a friend to share the wealth of knowledge and she loves it! All age appropriate. Aka we are college kids.engel_berta
This book was required reading for my two older kids. My son loved hearing the stories so much, he wanted his own copy. While he's several years away from even taking the class, the stories nonetheless intrigued and fascinated him. It's a wonderful read and great introduction to mythology that doesn't bore. The print is big and easy to read. The illustrations do a decent job of bringing the words to life. However, your youngster will probably have a better picture in his/her imagination! The price was the lowest I found either locally or on the Internet and the anticipation of the delivery made the stories even more enjoyable.AnthonyP
