1. What Now? [Book]

Product Details:
Based on her lauded commencement address at sarah lawrence college, this stirring essay by bestselling author ann patchett offers hope and inspiration for anyone at a crossroads, whether graduating, changing careers, or transitioning from one life stage to another. with wit and candor, patchett tells her own story of attending college, graduating, and struggling with the inevitable question, what now? from student to line cook to teacher to waitress and eventually to award-winning author, patchett's own life has taken many twists and turns that make her exploration genuine and resonant. as patchett writes, "'what now?' represents our excitement and our future, the very vitality of life." she highlights the possibilities the unknown offers and reminds us that there is as much joy in the journey as there is in reaching the destination.
Reviews:
This is a great little book; perfect for gift giving, too. Originally a lecture for graduates, the reason behind her subject is explained and is totally inspiring for all ages, high school to senior citizen. I have always loved this author; that's why I first checked this book out of the library. After reading it, I wanted it for my own library to read once in a while and then bought more for gifts for friends and family members. A gem.mouliin
2. These Precious Days: Essays [Book]

Product Details:
The beloved new york times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "the elegance of patchett's prose is seductive and inviting: with patchett as a guide, readers will really get to grips with the power of struggles, failures, and triumphs alike." –publisher's weekly "any story that starts will also end." as a writer, ann patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. at the center of these precious days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores "what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self." when patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer tom hanks' short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. it would introduce her to a remarkable woman–tom's brilliant assistant sooki–with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both. a literary alchemist, patchett plumbs the depths of her experiences to create gold: engaging and moving pieces that are both self-portrait and landscape, each vibrant with emotion and rich in insight. turning her writer's eye on her own experiences, she transforms the private into the universal, providing us all a way to look at our own worlds anew, and reminds how fleeting and enigmatic life can be. from the enchantments of kate dicamillo's children's books (author of the beatryce prophecy) to youthful memories of paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of charles schultz's snoopy; the expansive vision of eudora welty to the importance of knitting, patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most. infused with the author's grace, wit, and warmth, the pieces in these precious days resonate deep in the soul, leaving an indelible mark–and demonstrate why ann patchett is one of the most celebrated writers of our time.
Reviews:
If you love Ann Patchett you will love this book. It offers a selection of essays and speeches she has written over many years on a wide variety of subjects, some of which are very personal. Patchett talks about life, death, family, friendship, parenthood and pets, giving the reader insight into her personal views and lessons learned, without being preachy. The book can be read as a whole or dipped into as stand alone chapters. The writing is intimate, insightful and beautiful.Licorice Allsorts
3. Truth & Beauty: A Friendship [Book]

Product Details:
Ann patchett and the late lucy grealy met in college in 1981, and, after enrolling in the iowa writers’ workshop, began a friendship that would be as defining to both of their lives as their work. in grealy’s critically acclaimed memoir, autobiography of a face, she wrote about losing part of her jaw to childhood cancer, years of chemotherapy and radiation, and endless reconstructive surgeries. in truth & beauty, the story isn’t lucy’s life or ann’s life, but the parts of their lives they shared. this is a portrait of unwavering commitment that spans twenty years, from the long winters of the midwest, to surgical wards, to book parties in new york. through love, fame, drugs, and despair, this is what it means to be part of two lives that are intertwined . . . and what happens when one is left behind. it is about loyalty, and being lifted up by the sheer effervescence of someone who knew how to live life to the fullest.
Reviews:
This is a breath-taking book. Patchett and Grealy had an obsessive, co-dependent and at times, downright unhealthy friendship and Patchett lays it all bare here. It is a story full of love, but not blind love. It is the sort of creative nonfiction book, which if it had been presented as fiction, would seem unbelievable. I read it in one (long) sitting as I found each page made me more and more curious. Grealy must have been charismatic and charming for Patchett to weather so much bad behaviour from her. A wonderful book about this particular friendship, but also about friendship generally.
This book is greatI highly recommend it!rebeccamat-0
4. State Of Wonder [Book]

Product Details:
Ann patchett raises the bar with state of wonder, a provocative and ambitious novel set deep in the amazon jungle. research scientist dr. marina singh is sent to brazil to track down her former mentor, dr. annick swenson, who seems to have disappeared in the amazon while working on an extremely valuable new drug. the last person who was sent to find her died before he could complete his mission. plagued by trepidation, marina embarks on an odyssey into the insect-infested jungle in hopes of finding answers to the questions about her friend's death, her company's future, and her own past. once found, dr. swenson is as imperious and uncompromising as ever. but while she is as threatening as anything the jungle has to offer, the greatest sacrifices to be made are the ones dr. swenson asks of herself, and will ultimately ask of marina. state of wonder is a world unto itself, where unlikely beauty stands beside unimaginable loss. it is a tale that leads the reader into the very heart of darkness, and then shows us what lies on the other side. — publisher description

Reviews:
Slow to get going but about a quarter of the way in I found the book much harder to put down. It's an unusual plot concerning secretive drug development in the Amazon and the main character Marina's own personal trials as she tracks down her former tutor (who is carrying out this research) to find out how her colleague died there. Some bits of the story had me wondering whether the author was in her own "state of wonder" and the ending did leave some loose threads for me but it was quite an entertaining read and certainly "different". Does pose some ethical dilemmas along the way too.
I purchased this book because I had read/heard that it was THE book to read over the summer. I found it to be well-written with lovely imagery and good characterization. I consider a book to be very good if it is hard to put down and you feel a connection with the characters. This was the case with State of Wonder. However, I found the whole premise of 73 year old women getting pregnant a bit "out there" (by eating tree bark??!!) but again, it is a work of fiction. This is a fast read type of book. I would recommend it, mainly to female readers, who enjoy works by authors like Alice Hoffman. I was a bit disappointed in the ending. I had hoped for a happier "connection" for the main character and I felt terrible about what happened to the young boy, Easter. It definitely leaves the reader thinking about their outcomes long after the last page has been read.dimaggiosgirl
5. The Diary Of A Young Girl : The Definitive Edition By Anne Frank

Reviews:
I really enjoyed this read. Anne was a fantastic writer for her age. It was hard to keep telling myself that she was only a teenager. At times it does seem repetitive, but you have to be able to remind yourself that she was writing about her daily activities for a couple of years that did not allow her to leave the confines of the Annex. It was refreshing to see through the minds of a teen during such an emotionally taxing time. The pictures let you envision what they all looked like. I also liked seeing the picture of the building that the Annex was in. This diary was heartbreakingly raw, but beautifully written and easily understood.Kristin
I first read this book in 8th grade English class. From the first page I was drawn into Anne's world. When you read it, it's like she is writing to you. A great read and a clear insight into another time period. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in history. This is about a smart, well-read young girl.Shannon

8. It Starts With Us: A Novel [Book]

Product Details:
After nearly two years separated, she is elated that for once, time is on their side, and she immediately says yes when atlas asks her on a date. but her excitement is quickly hampered by the knowledge that, though they are no longer married, ryle is still very much a part of her life—and atlas corrigan is the one man he will hate being in his ex-wife and daughter’s life. revealing more about atlas’s past and following lily as she embraces a second chance at true love while navigating a jealous ex-husband, it proves that “no one delivers an emotional read like colleen hoover” (anna todd, new york times bestselling author).
Reviews:
Who knew we needed a sequel. A Wonderful addition to the characters lives. Although the first book made me sad I loved that there was hope at the end. To have a storyline/book where it truly is focus on Atlas and Lily was a fabulous added touch. I truly enjoyed the Theo character what a lovable grown up boy he was. I enjoyed the other subplot storyline that happened. This book was very realistic in the way it depicts what happens when a divorce mother begins dating and has to deal with possible fallout of the ex-husband not being okay with it. Another exceptional storyline by Ms. Hoover bravo to her.Ann-Marie B.
The Perfect Sequel to It Ends With Us This was such a perfect end to a story we didn t know we needed a sequel to. It Ends With Us ended on a perfect note and we kinda gather what was going to happen to Lily and Atlas. It Starts With Us gave such an incredible story a love story we needed to read. I loved it for so many different reasons Lily is a superhero! Atlas is perfection and Rile is in desperate need of someone who can help him I cant help but feel bad for him I know I shouldn t but I can t help it. Colleen you ve done it again and I can t recommend this book enough. 2 people found this helpfulYady S.
The uplift we all need I have read everything Colleen Hoover has written so I had been counting the days until “It Starts With Us” was released. Meanwhile I reread “It Ends With Us” to refresh my memory of the characters. (It made me realize that I want to go back and reread all her books.) I fell in love all over again with Lily and Atlas. It was a hard heartfelt read. “It Starts With Us” picks up where the first book ends and we readers not only wanted that we needed it. These books will hit home with many people and it will offer them encouragement and hope. And we all need that. It s an absolute perfect read and you walk away feeling content. We all need that too.KNH

Reviews:
I had the book saved for a while now and when the price dropped I grabbed it. Upon first receiving the book it was in a thin plastic sleeve (think of cheap trash bag material) with no padding to protect it at all. I opened it to find a book with no cover sleeve like the picture made out and this information not listed in the description that I could find when I went back to check. The pages were folded and just overall not in good quality. Hard cover bent and lumpy.clkosirog90

These books are classics, and great reads for readers of all ages. This boxed set was a good value, although the box was torn and I had to take it back together. The books themselves were like new, and that was what was important. There were eight books in the set, paperbacks,. It is not a fancy set, but very readable and affordable. The books are timeless and give an enchanting portrait of a very colorful person with many intriguing supporting characters.scentsercher

Read the series that inspired three pines on prime video. – in still life, bestselling author louise penny introduces inspector armand gamache of the surêté du québec. – winner of the new blood dagger, arthur ellis, barry, anthony, and dilys awards. – chief inspector armand gamache of the surêté du québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of montreal. jane neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of three pines, just north of the u.s. border, has been found dead in the woods. the locals are certain it's a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that jane neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter. – still life introduces not only an engaging series hero in inspector gamache, who commands his forces—and this series—with integrity and quiet courage, but also a winning and talented new writer of traditional mysteries in the person of louise penny.
Reviews:
Love Louise Penny's books! From this first installment in her series I was hooked. Highly recommend if you enjoy a good mystery with multi dimensional characters. The setting is in the Eastern townships of Canada outside Quebec. The Chief inspector is very likeable. Ms Penny has a way of making the town and people come alive with her dialogue and descriptions. Do yourself a favor and read these books.1ablemom
This is my first taste of Louise Penny and I would definitely come back for more! If you hail from a small town, you will appreciate more how quickly you come to know Three Pine's residents, and their virtues, foibles, and eccentricities. The mystery plot is slow-moving, so I would not recommend this for the action-seeking reader. More a quiet tale of the effect a death has on a quiet community and the distrust and coming together of those involved. I enjoy delving into the psychological aspects of people and these folks exude realism and charm! Found it utterly delightful, especially Penny's easy, detailed prose. Great first tale!mooseontheloose_cpa
This, the first novel about the erudite detective Gamage, a marvellous French Quebecois who is deeply read, is wonderful. The village which is the setting and its recurring characters are deeply endearing. But…. there are now quite a few more on the same theme and frankly after the third, they became tedious for me and with more than a hint of Midsummer Murders-a tiny village with a murder every few months? I would read this and the next, then leave them for a few months at least.Mary
12. A Discovery Of Witches: A Novel [Book]

Product Details:
Adventure / thriller. "a discovery of witches," "shadow of night," and "the book of life," now available in a beautiful boxed set with more than two million copies sold in the united states, the novels of the number one "new york times"-bestselling all souls trilogy have landed on all the major bestseller lists, garnered rave reviews, and spellbound legions of loyal fans. now all three novels are available in an elegantly designed boxed set that's perfect for fans and newcomers alike.
Reviews:
Somehow I never heard of A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness until a friend recommended it to me recently. I dont read a lot of fantasy or paranormal literature as a rule. I enjoyed it a lot because it has all the ingredients I look for: interesting, well-developed characters, a bit of humor, mystery, a twisty plot, and great settings (I would so like to visit the Bodleian Library). It also has something Ive never previously encountered in a novel: characters speaking Old French or Occitan. Perfect for those who enjoy vampires and the paranormal (and even for those of us who don't read many vampire stories).bastimret
I'm really enjoying this book. I saw the series on tv and liked it so i decided to read the first book. This goes into so much more details of each person background that they can only show you so much on tv. Matthew and Diana are my new favorite couple to love. CAn't wait to read the next book and watch season 2.YOLANDA
I had made an abortive attempt to watch the TV adaptation of this trilogy without first reading the books, but someone loaned me the first – Discover of Witches – and I was hooked by the end of the first twenty pages. The novel is rich with detail – of history, metaphysics, and places – and the characters manage to be both exotic and believable: no small feat when writing about witches, vampires, and demons. As an historian, I am attracted to stories that bring the past to life, but only if the depiction is authentic and then only if it is also entertaining. Harkness does not disappoint.pookettemaureen

I loved this book and it is a must read for a housewives fan! The way the chapters were structured was so interesting and mirrored the way the show confessionals are done, where the women are sharing their perspective woven around the narrative we are watching on TV. The passion and depth that Dave Quinn has as a true fan of housewives was evident and this book could only be written by someone with the knowledge that a Bravo aficionado has!H

Reviews:
Emily Henry has done it again. This book made me laugh so hard I woke up the neighbor's dog at 6am (sweet revenge). I laughed, I cried and I didn't want it to end while dying to know how it ended. If you like Rom Com then this should be your first summer read this year. I kept sending screen shots of pages to my friends. It is a witty read with a romance between a characters that would get dumped in a Hallmark romance. Just go read it!Kristen
– 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 -𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞- 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐬. Book Lovers, definitely surpasses any expectations I had for it. It is *chefs kiss*. Emily Henry has a new fan, I'm ordering her other two books right now. I have committed to read everything she ever writes. ✔️ Tall Girl Representation ✔️ Enemies to Lovers ✔️ Bookish Humor ✔️ Workplace Romance It gives me Devil Wears Prada (But not Andrea… more like Emily) Hallmark Rom-Com vibes. And the male lead is also changed. But still that vibe. "𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮." The writing is absolutely spectacular! I was laughing, then I was holding back tears, then I was laughing again. The way she writes the emotional depth is just wonderful. This isn't just a fun, romance book about Nora and Charlie. It's a book about family, learning how to put yourself first, and letting go. – 𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫. It was so heartwarming, the perfect book to read on a rainy summer day, under a cozy blanket.ellen.f
