I am 90 percent finished with this book, and being honest – I do NOT want it to end. This book is incredibly wonderful! What a story Kyle shares about his amazing hike of the Appalachian Trail! Kyle is a fantastic writer, his dog Katana is so cool, and they make the perfect hiking team. And what challenges Kyle faces, and overcomes, on the AT. It is mind-boggling! The first 200 pages of this book are an excellent easy to read travel romp as two old travelling companions take on the herculean task of trekking the Appalachian trail. Lots of humour and interesting happenings until they take an end of season break. The second half of the book mainly entails the author continuing on small sections of the trail on his own with only a brief reappearance of his wacky companion. He spends many pages complaining about American forest management other trekkers and quoting huge drafts from pamphlets he has picked up in souvenir gift shops, and the book becomes quite boring. From my reading of several of Bill Bryson's travel books this seems to be a regular format. He heads of enthusiastically on a huge adventure and entertains you for a while then slowly turns into a grumpy old man mostly concentrating on explaining how bad the cheap hotels and restaurants he frequents are, you can see why he usually travels alone, who would want him as a travel partner. I gave the book 3 stars for the first half.
I am reading this book on my Axis library app, it is so good, I wanted my husband to also read. He only reads regular books, I found this on eBay at a fantastic price, now we are both reading it at the same time; I like that. The story is non-fiction, author is funny and also gives a lot of great historical tidbits. I definitely would like to read this authors other books and will look into that.mykittycats
Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods is a spectacular true life tale of one not so physically fit man's journey along the Appalachian Trail. We meet his wonderfully less fit companion, Steven Katz, as the two set off from Georgia on their trek towards Maine. The reader is ultimately pleased to find that the cherished American fantasy of hiking the complete Appalachian Trail is much more challenging than it sounds. As we live Bill's aching adventure step by step, we continually realize our personal dream of hiking the trail has crashed into pieces. But, Bill's difficulties along the trail are told in hilarious detail and his spirited writing style will have you turning pages faster than you can breathe. Heartwarming glimpses into the 'real America' are portrayed, akin to Jenkin's "A Walk Across America"(2001). Bryson's A Walk In The Woods is a refreshing and humorous study of human nature and personal foibles. This book should be considered a gem among travel readers everywhere, and I highly recommend it. I've recommended that you purchase the hardcover edition of this book, knowing that you'll want read it time and time again.carriebaby

I've read many, and at this point, while they are still enjoyable, it is getting harder to find a story that really draws me in and stands out from the rest. This is that book. The ebay service was great as usual, but the trail guide itself is lacking. The map is scaled out so wide that it's often hard to really gain any useful knowledge from it. It does mark all of the shelters, but you can find a shelter guide online for free. While hiking, the map is all but useless in letting you know where you are, and what you'll be coming across.jerble84

This is the story of two groups of people who want to spend a few weeks of their vacation hiking along the picturesque appalachian trail, which runs about 2.200 miles from maine to georgia. but these vacation hikers don't realize they are going to run across the path of a pair of crazed mountaineer serial killers, who have a warped sense about how hikers are believed to be spoiling their appalachian mountains lifestyle. the two groups of hikers find their lives intertwined as they try to survive the cruel, murderous pair of backwoods killers. the hikers have to resort to wily way and courageous acts in their battle to survive.

Probably the worst AT book I have read. Great subject matter for any thru-hiker, hiker in general, geocacher, camper or anyone in the woods, but SO SHORT, it was bad. The storyline could have been expanded so much more I'm sure with the right research. The amount of text per page was very short, I counted only 100 words on one of the longer pages. I feel there may have been more references to this type of incident across the other various AT books or online articles or pamphlets I have read then this whole book. I think it is a very valuable subject and little effort that went into the writing of this book, I even surprised it was published as it had a nice cover and text physical style…but just poor substance.techrnw
