Loved these from my own childhood; still useful as an adult. Sometimes you just want to know how to draw a recognizable bear, and you know your level is going to be "cartoon" and that only with hand-holding. Especially good if you have a kid who's making you draw things and you want them to look at least competent.one-knife-to-shiv
10. How To Draw What You See [Book]
Product Details:
The 35th anniversary edition of the classic how-to book that has helped millions of artists learn to draw.when it was originally published in 1970, how to draw what you see zoomed to the top of watson-guptill’s best-seller list—and it has remained there ever since. “i believe that you must be able to draw things as you see them—realistically,” wrote rudy de reyna in his introduction. today, generations of artists have learned to draw what they see, to truly capture the world around them, using de reyna’s methods. how to draw what you see shows artists how to recognize the basic shape of an object—cube, cylinder, cone, or sphere—and use that shape to draw the object, no matter how much detail it contains.
Reviews:
I bought this book because it was required for a college course I was taking. Now that I have been actually using it I am sure I will keep it and add it to my library. It has a lot of visual aids in it to help you understand the subject. I find this very helpful because I am a very visual person and prefer to see something done before I try to do it myself. It's not excessively wordy like the other book I had to have for this class. Very clear and concise.peacefulpanda75
I had this book years ago and it was an assigned book for a class but it comes in very handy for beginning drawers and seasoned alike. The section on portrait drawing was especially helpful. The break down on the sections of the face, where to place the eyes, nose and mouth can save a lot of time and tears in getting a closer resemblance from the beginning. Over all I like the book. Some places I felt it was overly technical in the illustration, as in the the chapter on drawing the figure. I would have much rather seen more gesture drawing but this is not Mr. De Reyna's style. So, whether you are a beginner or someone who just draws for fun this book will give you a good foundation for very nice drawings.djsn53
I bought this book for myself. I love to draw and paint, but my pictures didn't look realistic. This book is very helpful. I only wish there was also a DVD that went with it. I am a very visual learner.reasa7738

12. 101 Things To Learn In Art School [Book]
Product Details:
Lessons, demonstrations, definitions, and tips on what to expect in art school, what it means to make art, and how to think like an artist.what is the first thing to learn in art school? “art can be anything.” the second thing? “learn to draw.” with 101 things to learn in art school, artist and teacher kit white delivers and develops such lessons, striking an instructive balance between technical advice and sage concepts. these 101 maxims, meditations, and demonstrations offer both a toolkit of ideas for the art student and a set of guiding principles for the artist. complementing each of the 101 succinct texts is an equally expressive drawing by the artist, often based on a historical or contemporary work of art, offering a visual correlative to the written thought. “art can be anything” is illustrated by a drawing of duchamp's famous urinal; a description of chiaroscuro art is illuminated by an image “after caravaggio”; a lesson on time and media is accompanied by a view of a jenny holzer projection; advice about surviving a critique gains resonance from piero della francesca's arrow-pierced saint sebastian.101 things to learn in art school offers advice about the issues artists confront across all artistic media, but this is no simple handbook to making art. and so this book belongs on the reading list of art students, art teachers, and artists, but it also belongs in the library of everyone who cares about art as a way of understanding life.

Beautiful design and easy to follow.Rebecca
After purchasing this divine book for a friend, I simply HAD to buy my own copy. Not only a visual feast, but also a brilliant guide for any amateur artist looking to learn and improve painting and drawing skills. I can't wait for my kids to be old enough to use this book!!! Suitable for all ages. You can tell how much love and thoughtfulness has gone into every little detail.Bec Const
If you are looking for a cliche drawing guide that says "Step 1: Draw an arch. Step 2: Draw the entire rest of the cafe scene." then this is definitely the book for you. You can make use of the drawings within as inspiration or vague reference if you are good at copying or need a reference for what something looks like but this is not a book for beginners or anyone looking for useful guides on how to draw anything. This book will not teach you to draw anything, let alone every little thing. It can be used for copying or inspiration though.Aspiring Illustrator
