This is an excellent way to teach beginning bassists how to play the instrument and read music at the same time. I was trained early in my life with the Hal Leonard method and feel comfortable using the technique contained in this book to train others. It is a strong contender for the #1 choice in string instrument instruction. What the heck is "awesome sauce"?rose2316

Reviews:
Good at explaining principles of the bass guitar but would be more engaging with recognisable tunes early on. As you learn the notes of new strings, the tunes it gives you to play can sound quite abstract. Otherwise good.winner_richy

The most detailed accurate book I've ever read on Bass Guitars. Absolutely amazing. I love this book. The pictures are Spectacular. Thank You, Geddy Leebb1671
This colorful tome is nearly nine pounds of incredible photographs and very readable text concerning the electric bass, the workhorse of every rock band and bottom and driving force of most other musical aggregations. You may wonder if there are any old basses left in the world after viewing Geddy Lees collection. Its a great limited edition that probably cost a million dollars to publish. Worth every cent.jedson45

I bought this for my son years ago who felt it was very easy to learn from. He is now playing bass in a band and also in a symphony. We were so impressed with his improvement and renewed interest, that my sister picked up the bass and took the lessons too. Now we find out just how famous the author & educator is , he's very well known in the music world and has done studio work for, as well as toured with big name musicians over a number of years. Our whole family highly recommends this lesson book!hummierman

6. The Bass Book: A Complete Illustrated History Of Bass Guitars [Book]

Product Details:
In california in the early '50s, the fender company introduced the world's first electric bass guitar. they couldn't have known known it then, but the precision bass would start a revolution in the sound of popular music. this book explains how that revolution happened and how its reverberations are still felt today. the two-guitars-bass-and-drums lineup that would define pop music found its heart with the fender bass. in the coming decades, the bass guitar provided the solid foundation upon which much modern music is still built. the bass book is the first to study its story, with the full lowdown of the most important bass players and bass makers. brands featured in the book include alembic, danelectro, epiphone, fender, fodera, gibson, hofner, ibanez, lakland, line 6, music man, peavey, rickenbacker, sadowsky, spector, squier, steinberger, wal, warwick, and yamaha. original interviews with makers of bass guitars from the past and present illuminate the book, with the popular establishment of the bass during the '60s and '70s examined in detail, along with more recent developments such as the popularity of the five-string bass. there is an exclusive interview with paul mccartney and other bassists who feature in the story, including stanley clarke, flea, james jamerson, jaco pastorius, and robert trujillo. dozens of unusual, desirable, and rarely seen basses are presented in high-quality photos. a reference section provides a wealth of information on the key makers. the bass book has all you need to know about the story of the bass guitar in one stylish, readable volume, and this revised and refreshed third edition brings the story right up to date.
Reviews:
I've looked for a hardcover copy of this for years. Fantastic color photography and compelling history of the instrument. Highly recommend for both musicians and lovers of the sound it produces.swar9585
Great history and details about the bassNitro
The Bass Book is for people who already know the subject and want to quickly reference some of the main points of the development of the product up to the late 90's, or someone just beginning to take an interest. Characteristics and quirks of the products listed are brief and to the point and based upon industry and historical sources, so don't expect recommendations or clues as to what suits the individual best. The recent advances in amplification, effects and use of software would require an entirely different type of resource book, which perhaps one day be contemplated by the author.mgharman

Reviews:
Johnny Hatton's Rockabilly Bass book isn't for the casual slapper. It covers the basics of the technique but quite quickly escalates to quite complex rhythms and uses proper musical notation instead of bass tabs, so if you don't read music you will need to learn. This is no bad thing – if you're dedicated enough to teach yourself to play Rockabilly Upright Bass then why not be dedicated enough to learn properly and teach yourself to read music at the same time? The downloadable video clips are good. They bring clarity to some pretty complicated musical ideas that the layman may find quite confusing in written form. Describing the Mambo beat, or the Bo Diddley beat in musical terms of notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, rests etc seems almost unfathomable but hearing how it sounds and seeing how it's played on the clip brings instant recognition and helps in understanding just how these things are put together and how and why they work.chadsimon
Killer Rockabilly Slap Bass Technique. I play upright bass already. Have allways dug roots rock n roll, and wished to explore rockabilly slap technique, from an academic perspective. This is beneficial, to bassists of all levels; beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced, who wish to gain a further insight into rockabilly upright slap bass technique. Paz. Ross H.vllmay

Great book, at a great price.marcoz2622
Purchased at the direction of my teacher. Also purchased Essential Strings 2000 for Electric Bass Book I. Beginners level, both books. Easy to follow for a fast start, instructional video has a retro feel, but still effective. Haven't used audio disc yet. Recommend instructor for finger exercises; beginners with small hands or shorter fingers may find the stretch difficult even with the 30 inch Bass. Progressing faster than I thought I could with these books. Probably nothing better out there, and I went to or called numerous music and book stores before ordering from the web. Couldn't find Book 1 any where; only Books 2 and 3 were ever on the shelves.fishzlot
