excellent book for bass guitartaylorjosephmichael
After borrowing this book from a friend I immediately wanted one for my own that I would not have to give back. Unlike some videos I tried, this book starts with basics. Using both words and pictures the reader sees the proper positions and movements for both hands as well as how to sit and what the proper playing position should feel like. Some techniques for hand stretching and strengthening are also included. In 98 short pages this book goes from being aimed at the "complete beginner" to playing with other instruments to reading music and teaching intermediate techniques. Canty's writing style is easy to understand, and at times it felt to me like I was being tutored by someone who actually knew not only how to play, but how to teach. It is certainly not a college level text, but I think that is what made it useful to me: It's a simple instruction manual for a total beginner. If you buy this book and follow the steps as written, I believe you too will learn "How to Play Bass Guitar".branson247

Reviews:
I have bought "self help" books in the past and been disappointed, but when I opened this book and played with the inclosed cd, I was impressed. I have been playing other styles on my bass, but had never ventured into the blues. This book, if followed, will show how you can actually sound decent with the play along in just a couple of sessions. You just can't play and go on, if you are a beginner, but do have to practice the exercises. The cd really helps you hear this. Great book for the beginner thru mid level player to learn or brush up on correct finger placements.forefrnite

excellent bass exercise book for the price!!! thank you…taylorjosephmichael
Awesome book! Plenty of excellent exercises…A MUST buy!!ho8489
I've been playing bass for about 17 years now but my first instrument is piano/keys. As a pianist, the transition to bass wasn't difficult from an ear training perspective because I had been playing bass notes on piano all my life. But acquiring proper form and technique was an entirely different story. I didn't realize how ineffective my practice time was until I picked up this book. A lot of my bad habits were habits I carried over from piano. So this book is not only helping my bass technique, but my piano technique as well. A great feature of this book is that it provides stafff notation and tablature. This way those who may be a little intimidated by reading a bass clef can look down at the tab to see their positioning. It's a no-brainer!! Try it! I strongly recommend this book.dvnty

Happy with this purchase.tomj8195
I had this and the Jump & Blues Bass by the same guy, but lost them. Once I found these again this year for some fair prices I grabbed them! Bottom line, if you want to play some REAL Country bass, this is the book that will show you how. It's various short-to-the-point lessons get you up & running without a lot of bull. The J&B book is the same way. A Must Have IMHO!jcspro40

Reviews:
As always Hal Leonard produces a great product. It pushes you just enough as a beginner. It doesnt have any bass instruction element and assumes you have a basic knowledge of tab or musical notation, so you may want to get the bass course book if you are not familiar with that. There is a good mix of styles/genres too.jasotarli
