Reviews:
I'm a first time beekeeper. I have taken classes and I have reference materials. This book is by far the best resource. I would definitely recommend classes but when it comes to books I'd say choose this one. It is easy to find the information you need, the information is spot on, and it's even entertaining to read! On the news one night they showed a police officer who is a beekeeper vacuuming up a swarm that had formed in a public place. No hat, no veil, no gloves, no suit, no smoker, no problem with bees being aggressive and stinging. So a couple of days later I tried just checking my hives for a few minutes without using the smoker. They hadn't been too bad when I checked them previous times with the smoker going. Guess what? I have have never seen such an angry bunch of bees! I have a one piece bee suit and one managed to get inside my hood. I got stung on my ankle (that one became infected and I had to be prescribed antibiotics 10 days later). They followed me to the house, that's never happened before or since. Four hours after that check they were still willing to come up to the house to sting (they chased my husband who had not been present for the morning check, and when I went out moments later I got stung three times on the back of my left shoulder). That too hadnever happened before, nor since, while using the smoker. I think it was 2 days later that I received this book and read the writer's comment about how not using a smoker would be a mistake you'd only make once. I could agree with the him whole-heartedly! He gives very good instruction on how to use the smoker too. I have no idea how that cop did what he did, it must be some kind of magic LOL. When I wondered if my bees were thinking of swarming this book explained what bearding in hot weather was. I am so glad I bought this, and I would recommend it to anyone who is starting out and the best book to have on hand for answers to questions.elendilite63
Fabulous book, very informative. Highly recommended if you are thinking of keeping bees. Covers every aspect.123-smartcar

14. A Book Of Bees: –And How To Keep Them [Book]
Product Details:
A new york times notable book, sue hubbell's a book of bees is "a melodious mix of memoir, nature journal, and beekeeping manual" (kirkus reviews). weaving a vivid portrait of her own life and her bees' lives, sue hubbell lovingly describes the ins and outs of beekeeping on her small missouri farm, where the end of one honey season is the start of the next. with three hundred hives, hubbell stays busy year-round tending to the bees and harvesting their honey, a process that is as personally demanding as it is rewarding. exploring the progression of both the author and the hive through the seasons, this is "a book about bees to be sure, but it is also about other things: the important difference between loneliness and solitude; the seasonal rhythms inherent in rural living; the achievement of independence; the accommodating of oneself to nature" (philadelphia inquirer). beautifully written and full of exquisitely rendered details, it is a tribute to hubbell's wild hilltop in the ozarks and of the joys of living a complex life in a simple place.includes photographs by sam potthoff.

Good condition, one of the best bee books ever.jericainamerica
I have been giving thought to keeping bees when I do finally retire. The world needs millions more bees. This little book is a charming introduction packed full of information and sound advice. But it is more that just an handbook. Sue obviously has a deep love for her bees, her way of life, her community and the land she calls home. This love comes forward in a lyrical and gently flowing prose that takes the reader on like riding an inner tube down a lazy river in summer. But it, enjoy it. I did.moonshinewolf

A wonderful, easy to read book with brilliant photos. Love this book.ozfi73fiona
A great book with good explanation.larrcas-693
A very useful reference guide to dip in-an-out of as needed, or to read straight through. Clear pictorial references (essential for those new to apiary), plus the enthusiasm and personal perspectives of the authors really animates the textual/photographic content. This book is written for an American readership – although climatic references can be generalised to conditions in other countries. Information about varroa mites (fortunately) hence does not apply in Australia, however no doubt a vital reference for other areas stricken by this pest. I really enjoyed this book, and now cannot wait to manage my own hives.Belski in the mountains

Reviews:
I was recommended the Advanced Top Bar Beekeeping book by a friend since I want to start beekeeping. It is number two in a series however, and Booktopia does not offer the initial book. This makes it awkward as one year's prior experience is assumed throughout the book. Apart from that assumption, the information is clear and concise and accompanied by appropriate photography. Please note the style of beekeeping outlined is top bar as opposed to the more common Langstroth hives. This book is good addition to an apiarist's library.
This book is very informative for anyone wanting to get into Top Bar Bee Keeping, well laid out and easy to not only to read but follow and understand. Clear concise instructions.Scr00ge

Good photos and illustrations, but a rather simplistic and basic take on a LOT of topics. Okay for a basic overview, but not enough info if I was planning to really delve into one of the topics.ANNE T.
My neighbor loaned me her copy to review before purchasing. This book is a MUST HAVE for any "homesteader". Some really great information in here. It even tells you how to make vinegar, raise chickens, garden, etc. Looking forward to receiving my copy and putting the information to good use!Spooker15
