Authors claim this book works for any gardening zone and while this is correct, it takes a few moments to date your pages. Once this is done, book is ready to go! I love the gardening tips. I am a medium experienced gardener and I learned a few things right off the bat! I love the journal pages. They are divided by years so you can easily see what worked well (or not so well) the year before and plan accordingly. Journal pages are located within each week, which makes it very easy to see while you are IN the week. Pages can be wiped off, which is a great help when you have the book at the garden while working. One very small complaint. Print is dark gray, which is a little difficult for me to read without my glasses but again, a very small complaint. Also fun are the "She says / He says" tips. I bought this book about 3 weeks ago, and it inspired me enough that we have built three of these little gardens since. The author is a little overbearing as in "you have to have a grid" to call it a Square Foot Garden, but I like his ideas about using a raised box, keeping it small enough to work from any side, mixing our own soil, and planting close together. I love his planting charts, so that I know how many plants will fit in each square. Mel's soil mix is made from compost, peat moss, and vermiculite. I could not find large bags of vermiculite, so we used fewer and smaller bags of perlite, so our soil mix isn't exactly the same. I think we could have used the Miracle Grow soil and achieved similar results. We don't have much sunny, flat space for gardens, and our clay soil is so awful that we had previously given up on growing any of our own vegetables, especially root vegetables like beets and radishes. Even the local farmers' markets don't ever offer root crops. Things are starting to sprout, and I am optimistic about my tiny gardens. Now I want to get some compost bins started — I'm just looking for a place to put them.teechr2

If you are new to Square Foot Gardening, I recommend the All New Square Foot Gardening book, THIRD EDITION (2018). I used this book in the 1990's and had a garden for years. The method Square Foot Gardening takes some upfront prep and you are rewarded with little to no weeds and a very productive garden. I followed the methods in the New SFG book but that book doesn't have the details this 1st edition has. Your best bet is to have both books, the New one for creating your garden setup, then the this 1st edition for plant details. Lot of great ideas to make gardening fun instead of work!americagofishing
