Fascinating read for a non academic.tallships28
This is the book about modern physics that I have been waiting for. Lee Smolin published in the field of string theory for many years and has written this book that explains the problems with it and modern physics in general. Understanding the book requires an understanding of basic physics. There is no math but every problem is explained in detail. He compares the types of problems that modern physicists are experiencing with the problems that previous generations of physicists had with their own discoveries. By analogy, the problems are similar. He is thus implying that there are major problems with string theory and also with the direction modern physics is heading. I found the book very informative and very well written.edwardkrivoniak
If you're interested in the development of String Theory and it's pitfalls this is a book worth getting to grips with. Yes it is a hard read, but if you're interested in String Theory you're probably able to get to work your way through it.redcarbatterystacks

The manula follows hand in hand with the text book. Once again an excellent Physical science book for middle school but not a high school level. The only draw back is the manual really needs the lab kit to be evvective. The lab kits can service about 4 students at one time but at two thousand dollars a kit it is a rather costly program. Still, it is an effective programdczech
Exactly what I needed to start up a new "Physics for Everyday Life" course.nolan57
Excellent Physical Science book. This book does an excellent job of preparing middle school students for physics, chemistry and a little preparation for biology and geoscience. I would not call it a high school physics book as the mathematical applications never reach an Algebra II or even a high school geometry level. But as for a middle school preparitory class it is outstanding.dczech
3. Special Relativity: For The Enthusiastic Beginner [Book]

Product Details:
This book is written for high school and college students learning about special relativity for the first time. it will appeal to the reader who has a healthy level of enthusiasm for understanding how and why the various results of special relativity come about. all of the standard introductory topics in special relativity are covered: historical motivation, loss of simultaneity, time dilation, length contraction, velocity addition, lorentz transformations, minkowski diagrams, causality, doppler effect, energy/momentum, collisions/decays, force, and 4-vectors. additionally, the last chapter provides a brief introduction to the basic ideas of general relativity, including the equivalence principle, gravitational time dilation, and accelerating reference frames. the book features more than 100 worked-out problems in the form of examples in the text and solved problems at the end of each chapter. these problems, along with the discussions in the text, will be a valuable resource in any course on special relativity. the numerous examples also make this book ideal for self-study. very little physics background is assumed (essentially none in the first half of the book). an intriguing aspect of special relativity is that it is challenging due to its inherent strangeness, as opposed to a heavy set of physics prerequisites. likewise for the math prerequisite: calculus is used on a few occasions, but it is not essential to the overall flow of the book.

4. The Cartoon Guide To Physics [Book]
Product Details:
If you think a negative charge is something that shows up on your credit card bill — if you imagine that ohm's law dictates how long to meditate — if you believe that newtonian mechanics will fix your car — you need the cartoon guide to physics to set you straight.you don't have to be a scientist to grasp these and many other complex ideas, because the cartoon guide to physics explains them all: velocity, acceleration, explosions, electricity and magnetism, circuits — even a taste of relativity theory — and much more, in simple, clear, and, yes, funny illustrations. physics will never be the same!
Reviews:
This book has a great concept and way of teaching the subject Unfortunately it also teaches the Big Bang theory
My grandson seem to be liking his new book.crdowl
This is an excellent book on Basic Physics Covering Mechanics (motion, gravity, orbits, forces, momentum, energy, collisions, rotation etc.) & Electricity/Magnetism. It uses cartoons (comic strip style) to give real world examples of applied Physics. It is a most innovative, informative and often humorous approach to teaching. It is a great book for grasping concepts that can be difficult to understand when presented in a too technical way by traditional (Dry) textbooks. At it's root I suspect that this book is aimed at adults but much of the information might be accessable for for any science minded individual over the age of 9 or 10. At first glance the book might appear a little over simplified due to the "Cartoon" nature of the presentation, but a quick review of the index shows just how "Jam" packed of information this book really is. My Hat is off to the authors Larry Gonick & Art Huffman!daniell408
5. The Physics Of Superheroes: More Heroes! More Villains! More Science! Spectacular Second Edition [Book]

Product Details:
A complete update to the hit book on the real physics at work in comic books, featuring more heroes, more villains, and more science since 2001, james kakalios has taught "everything i needed to know about physics i learned from reading comic books," a hugely popular university course that generated coast-to-coast media attention for its unique method of explaining complex physics concepts through comics. with the physics of superheroes, named one of the best science books of 2005 by discover, he introduced his colorful approach to an even wider audience. now kakalios presents a totally updated, expanded edition that features even more superheroes and findings from the cutting edge of science. with three new chapters and completely revised throughout with a splashy, redesigned package, the book that explains why spider-man's webbing failed his girlfriend, the probable cause of krypton's explosion, and the newtonian physics at work in gotham city is electrifying from cover to cover.

6. The Physics Of Everyday Things: The Extraordinary Science Behind An Ordinary Day [Book]

Product Details:
Physics professor, bestselling author, and dynamic storyteller james kakalios reveals the mind-bending science behind the seemingly basic things that keep our daily lives running, from our smart phones and digital “clouds” to x-ray machines and hybrid vehicles. most of us are clueless when it comes to the physics that makes our modern world so convenient. what’s the simple science behind motion sensors, touch screens, and toasters? breaking down the world of things into a single day, kakalios engages our curiosity about how our refrigerators keep food cool, how a plane manages to remain airborne, and how our wrist fitness monitors keep track of our steps. each explanation is coupled with a story revealing the interplay of the astonishing invisible forces that surround us. through this “narrative physics,” the physics of everyday things demonstrates that—far from the abstractions conjured by terms like the higgs boson, black holes, and gravity waves—sophisticated science is also quite practical. with his signature clarity and inventiveness, kakalios ignites our imaginations and enthralls us with the principles that make up our lives.

8. Physics, Volume 1 [Book]
Product Details:
Written for the full year or three term calculus-based university physics course for science and engineering majors, the publication of the first edition of physics in 1960 launched the modern era of physics textbooks. it was a new paradigm at the time and continues to be the dominant model for all texts. physics is the most realistic option for schools looking to teach a more demanding course.

i actually want the volume 1 physic but the seller sent me the second version of the book. this book is not that good. the explaination in the book is bad and boring. i dont know why school use this book for teaching. also, the problems are hard to understand.feng-6680946
I have this book for my class and found it to be very dense. I have to read the chapter 4-5 times before I can understand just the basics. Compared to another book I used, University Physics, I felt that this book lacked a certain dimension making it difficult for students to learn. There is no chapter summary, which would have helped a lot.ccro
