I have been using Alfred's Basic Piano All in One Book One to begin teaching my three children (ages 5 6 and 7) to play piano this year In two months all of them recognize and name quarter notes half notes whole notes and other symbols Each child can read music clap the rhythms and play accordingly Each child can locate any note on the keyboard– and that's all learned in the first third of the book! The theory lessons are nicely interspersed with the songs to play Each theory lesson brings a few new songs where the child can apply their new knowledge I remember toting around several different piano books as a kid I remember disliking my theory book in particular So I greatly appreciate that these theory lessons are lumped in so meaningfully with the songs and though there are sufficient quantities of theory lessons they don't seem to override the entire book or intimidate the learner I LOVE that the kids can learn all the starter knowledge with just one book! Plus they're so tickled that they're able to play so soon and they're proud to show their Dad If you're looking for a useful and attractive beginner book for your child you should strongly consider this one I also offer my kids little rewards that come with their practice and progress Just last night my husband was marveling that they could all play like this in two months! This is the second lesson book of this series and goes with the writing book, which has fun reinforcement activities. The first book is about teaching children familiarisation of the keyboard, counting one, two and four beats and difference between treble/bass clef with a series of visual simple pieces. This second book then starts with reading the notes on the music. I have found pupils become much stronger readers by using this approach. My only criticism is that it is American so uses different terminology but I just change quarter note to crotchet etc. Would be great to have an English version like the later Faber books. Recommend to all that teach piano to 5-7 year olds. There is another book from the same series for 8-10 year old beginners.lahead1

Im a pianist myself and want my daughter to learn to play, but I feel shes a bit young at 5 for real lessons yet. This has given her experience of playing songs without having to read music, and she feels amazed to play back songs she knows and has played herself albeit very very slowly at the moment!. The recording function is brilliant as it only records her playing the notes, rather than any background noise and with a baby around, that makes a difference. The playing along to the songs will be good when she gets more confident, as they go much faster than her current speed of play.My only area for improvement would be that the main keys are labelled with numbers and the sharps/flats with letters, but they are just labelled from A to H, so the C is actually labelled A, the A labelled E etc, and I that could lead to confusion when the real note names are learnt. Otherwise, a great toy.rachel
This piano book is super fun and both our 2yr and 6yr old had fun playing with this. Id suggest staying present for younger kiddies playing with this as my 2yr old ripped the cover moments after I left the room. Its a good quality toy and Im disappointed its been damaged but Im still happy with it. Shes a little terror for ripping books up and I should have been more careful. There are some good details with this piano book..on the back cover it shows how to use and its good to have it there to refer to if need to.
