The book and study guide are fantastic, but the DVD seems like it was made in the 70s- old and almost archaic in the media presentation which was both disappointing and surprising. I am a lover of reading for pleasure and knowledge and I like to read many different genres in both fiction and non-fiction. I was especially excited to see that a new launch team was being formed for Max Anders's newly revised book of 30 Days to Understanding the Bible and I realized that this was the perfect opportunity for me to learn more about God's Word. I wasn't wrong and I certainly wasn't disappointed with this 30th anniversary expanded edition! At the beginning the author says "…if you want to understand the Bible, you must first learn how the Bible is put together". In the next 381 pages he shares his extensive knowledge of just how it was put together! He has included seven sections devoted to The Story of the Old Testament–The Story of the New Testament–Ten Great Doctrines of the Bible–NanoSummary of the Bible–How to Master the Bible So Well That the Bible Masters You–Teaching Plan and the added Bonus Chapters. At the end of each section there is a summary and a self-test that allows readers to determine just what they have learned and retained. I was thrilled to learn more about the geography and history of both the Old and New Testaments and I especially liked the NanoSummary of the Bible and the Teaching Plan. Anders has written a book that is both comprehensive and easy to understand and I believe that this will be a wonderful resource for my own personal Bible study and in teaching the teens in our church. I would not recommend this audio to anyone. The correct pronunciation of books especially job for Job. Saying one Kings instead of First Kings. This is consistently the language when speaking of the books that are First and Second… I have just finished the Old Testament. I ordered the book and will read it myself. There are many bible study methods but I have not seen one as in-depth as the inductive study method presented in How to Study Your Bible and workbook by Kay Arthur David Arthur and Pete De Lacy. The basis of this method are three components: observation-discover what it says interpretation-discover what it means and application-discover how it works. The authors walk you through how to use these three components in your study. Each one has certain questions that will help you to understand and dig deeper into your scriptures. The method itself looks a little confusing at first since there are so many symbols and markings that they are teaching you to use on your scriptures but once you learn them you can break down your daily verses and understand so much more. They teach you how to find who the author of the book is who they are writing to what God is trying to show us through His wonderful word and so much more. I have never studied the bible this way and have never had more understanding of what I was reading either. I was a little worried about practicing this method on a bible that I have since I know that in the beginning I would make some mistakes with my markings. This is where the FANTASTIC workbook comes in. I got to try out this method without ruining a bible I have plus all the answers are at the back of the book. (I felt like I was back in high school and cheating a little.) If you buy the book (which I HIGHLY recommend) you need to buy the workbook. It will make things so much easier and save you from going through a few bibles in the process. I can't wait to fully embrace this method. I would recommend this set of books to anyone that is really wanting to find some meaning in God's word and to grow their relationship with their heavenly Father. I'm not quite finished with the book, but I'm enjoying it and I've gained some new perspective based on the writers use of Hebrew and Greek word translations. 30 Days to Understanding the Bible – Max Anders [REVIEW] I began the study 30 Days to Understanding the Bible on September 14th and concluded on October 25th. This virtual study was sponsored by Bible Gateway. Each Monday there was a 15-20 minute video from the author, Max Anders, that kick started the rest of the lessons for the week. I thoroughly enjoyed the teaching and the methodology that Anders uses to commit the geography and history to memory. I have always been fascinated with how the Old Testament and New Testament are woven together to create the story of human salvation through Christ. When I first heard about this study I was intrigued by the fact that I was going to get a deeper understanding of the whole Bible by spending just 15 minutes a day for 30 days. Once I enrolled I found out that it is in fact a 6 week study. I don’t think the title was meant to be deceptive. Let me explain. If you just read the text or the study guide (& ignored the exercises) you could easily complete one of them by spending 15 minutes a day for 30 days. However, if you do the study as presented below you will spend much more than 15 minutes a day for 30 days. Monday – Watch the 15-20 video and add your notes to the outline in the Study Guide. Then answer the discussion questions with your small group. This can easily take an hour Tuesday – Read the assigned chapters in the main text (the yellow book) as well as completing the reviews and self tests in each chapter. To do a thorough job you need at least 90 minutes to complete this. Wednesday – Sunday complete the daily lessons (15-30 minutes each) If all you are doing is the 30 daily lessons in the study guide and not trying to fully grasp the material you could probably complete the course in 15 minutes a day (15 minutes x 30 days = 450 minutes/7.5 hours of study) BUT if you do the study the way it is described above it will take much more than 15 minutes a day for 30 days. (Video 15-20 minutes + discussion 45 minutes + assigned reading and exercises 90 minutes + 5 days of daily study 15-30 minutes) x 6 weeks = more than 1400 minutes/23 hours of study). Had I know how much time that it was going to take I probably would not have chosen to do this study when I did. Please do not misunderstand me, I think this is a wonderful resource to learn more about the structure and content of the Bible. Knowing the basic geography is vital to visualizing the places and the time it took to travel between them. The timeline of the Old Testament is not sequential, the books in fact overlap more than most people realize. There are sections on the history of Israel as well as the history of The Church. The final two sections deal exclusively with the great doctrines. I do think however that this would be much better as one volume instead of two. Although the author herself seems charming the study was not. I was part of a large group doing this study and the conclusion was that although it covered the whole Bible it was in a nutshell and this lead to more confusion. Her personal commentary was trite and crass. Many major stories come down to one verse out context that didn't make sense at all. As a women's leader for 32 years I find it hard to believe people like this study if you know the Bible you would be offended by her comments, if you don't know it your are being misguided. I absolutely hated the way she talked about Paul. She painted a portrait of him as an ego centered Apostle exulting himself. And she ask you to keep a straight face as you read his words in Romans 1:11 ! She obviously didn't study the context or history of the letters, or do good solid exegesis. She instead used her personal ides and opinions to paint a poor negative portrait of Paul. Tying to make Paul more like herself then the man he was. Her hero is Beth Moore and many of her studies are like this too. This a poorly written study, not much meat and very lacking in true scholarship. Beware of what you put into your heart.Princess
I have led this study many times now–with believers, with seekers, with a group of neighbors from many denominations, with kids (adapted)–and it is a wonderful introduction to the whole story of Scripture. For those who have been reading the Bible and know the stories of the Bible, it offers "a-ha" moments. For those will vague knowledge of the Biblical stories, it places context and understanding. Angie added a fresh perspective and numerous background facts while tracing Christ's presence in God's word from Genesis through Revelation. I absolutely love The Chosen! I could watch every episode over and over (and I have), and never get tired of it! I have been eagerly awaiting season two to be released, so I was really excited to see that there was a Bible study based on season one to hold me over until then! This study is broken up into 8 lessons, one to go along with each episode of season one. Each lesson starts out with a transcript from the episode to lead you into the lesson. It also includes "your turn" questions to get you reflecting and looking up scripture in your Bible. There is a section in each lesson called "Old Testament Context" which I love because it reiterates that the Bible is one ongoing love story from God, and that the Old Testament is just as important to read and understand as the New Testament. They are a package deal, and you cannot fully understand one without the other. The lessons use Mary Magdalene, Nicodemus, Matthew, and Simon's lives as examples in the lessons, and that really helps with application of the material. It was easy for me to see parts of myself in these people. The lessons each end with a prayer focus, and information for further study. I really enjoyed this study, and usually spent a day or two on each lesson to make sure that I soaked in all of the information and application. It is a study that will help you dig deeper, require you to dust off your Bible, but it is also not so overwhelming that you will not be able to fit it into your daily quiet time. If you enjoy watching The Chosen, or are just looking for an engaging Bible study, this would be a great option for you!
