Big book and well put together. The content is not as in-depth as I'd like it. I didn't really get knowing what it's like to be a bird from the bird's perspective – more about the writer's perspective. The illustrations are only ok (for me they are not good). The author claims to be an artist – he tried but the illustrations do not have specific enough detail for me. I thought it was a big, pricey book for a rather superficial.

I'm a new birder and bought this book at the suggestion of a boat captain who sails out of Rockport on the Texas coast. He advertises as a dolphin-watching tour but he and his wife know the birds of the area, too. I was lucky enough to see and hear some Seaside Sparrows on the barrier islands just past the Intercoastal Waterway. The book is thorough and logically organized. I do wish, however, that it came in spiral bound that could lie flat when open. Would be nice to be able to put the open book down and use both hands on the binoculars or camera. Sibleys field guide is the best overall birding book .It's compact size fits easily in a backpack or large pant pocket. The book is rugged to carry for everyday use ,but could use a sealed case. The Audubon books are the go-to books for bird identification and have been for decades. The only hiccup is if you live close to the dividing line between east and west (as in Colorado like me). The western region book seems to have everything I need, but I technically live in the eastern region according to the book. This is an old standard. It has what you need, but not in an easily accessible presentation. The photos are good, but not great. They lack bright clean detail for easy ID. This guide contains a lot of information. but the type face is incredibly small making it difficult to read and what good is information that you can't read? To use this guide in the field you would need to carry a magnifying glass in addition to binoculars. My suggestion is that if you are considering buying this guide look at an actual copy at the library or bookstore to determine it's usefulness to you. Compare this to the Collins guide which I find much easier and more pleasant to use. I wish I would have read this review before buying the Sibley on line. Love the Birds.aa10abbott

Living in the city I was curious as to weather or not I could attract different types of birds into my back yard. I brought this book because I thought it offered the best information pertaining to the kinds of feeders and habitat to bring the birds into my yard. As of three weeks into my experiment it seems the only birds that feed at the feeders right now are sparrows. I'm content at this present time to watch the sparrows and hope in time, and a change in the weather will bring a different variety of bird to the feeders and my yard. I think the book has opened a whole new world as to structure, gardening, and watching for different species of bird. There are many projects in the book to keep a person busy, such as the section on building your own feeders and bird houses.
