2. The Guide To Kansas Birds And Birding Hot Spots [Book]
Product Details:
Kansas is a bird-watcher's paradise, with its key location at the hub of the hemisphere's migration corridors and exceptional habitat diversity; 470 avian species have been documented within its borders. from spectacularly beautiful birds like painted buntings to elegant migrants like hudsonian godwits, birders can find abundant rewards every time they take to the field. the guide to kansas birds and birding hot spots focuses on 295 species that are most likely to be encountered in the state. it helps occasional day-trippers or backyard observers identify and learn about birds that regularly occur in kansas, with stunning color photos that enable those new to the hobby to identify their discoveries, plus tips on where to search for these species with the greatest likelihood of success. gress and janzen have produced an exceptionally well-organized guide that divides birds into 18 groups based on similarity in appearance, habitat, or behavior, following taxonomic order only partially to make identification easier for the beginner. the entry for each bird gives its size, identifying features (including sexual and seasonal distinctions), and where and when it can be found. and each account includes a brilliant color photo of an adult of the species, with additional views of selected birds to illustrate male, female, or juvenile plumages. the authors point out the best birding locations in the state-more than two dozen hot spots of which they have intimate knowledge—that reflect utterly different bird communities thriving only a few hours apart. they also provide a checklist for all state birds, a calendar of kansas bird activity, and recommendations for binoculars and other field guides.

A very comprehensive guide, with a number of different ways to identify the species, using color photographs.Quite a bit of life history and useful information. One of the things I noticed right away, being used to using a guide to identify insects,is that hummingbirds are all similar in appearance, for the most part, and the books notes this and has done a thorough job of depicting the birds in many different views, such as heads, tails, body, etc,,the various methods being separated by sections in the book.kevopilis

Reviews:
The images are location maps are very detailed and accurate. This is a good reference book and follows the BirdLife nomenclature quite closely. But it is not a pocket book (field guide) – too big and heavy.John the switcher
I'm lost for adequately descriptive words that cover this extensively researched and presented volume covering the myriad of Birds that adorn our skies. The illustrations are peerless in their details, which is enhanced by a succinct and uncomplicated text. This vast Volume is easy on the eye and whilst essentially a stay at home Book, it could readily be carried into the Field. Too, I appreciated the sections on Bird anatomy and an overview of the state of Ornitholigical research in this Country. If you wish to learn about all our Indigenious Avians plus those introduced deliberately or through seasonal visitations, then this is the Book to acquire and cherish. I cannot recommend this Publication more highly and I effusively compliment the Authors, Illustrators, and other Contributors. In addition, the Book is beautifully produced. It will make for a superb gift for both Birders and non-Birders alike, as well as Readers based in other Countries wishing to know of our vast, often unique, Avians. The Quiet Plodder

12. Extreme Birds: The World's Most Extraordinary And Bizarre Birds [Book]
Product Details:
"a wonderful collection of bird superlatives. . . . fascinating facts and beautiful photographs make this one a winner." — library journal – extreme birds is a photographic showcase of 150 birds at the extremes of nature. it reveals nature's ingenuity and sometimes its sense of humor. the species in this book were chosen for their extraordinary characteristics and for behaviors far beyond the typical. they are the biggest, the fastest, the meanest, the smartest. they build the most intricate nests, they have the most peculiar mating rituals, they dive the deepest and they fly the highest. these are the overachievers of the avian world. – some examples:most skilled nest builder: the tiny southern masked weaver reveals a surprising grasp of the principles of architecture. in just five days it weaves and knots thousands of fine grass strands to build a complex sphere-like nest that hangs from the tip of an overhead branch. – deadliest enemy: the southern cassowary is big (140 pounds), tall (6 feet) and fast (30 mph). this flightless bird can also leap 5 feet into the air and has 5-inch long claws that are capable of stabbing and disemboweling a human being. – most creative decorator: the blue bower bird creates an elaborate "bachelor pad" bower and decorates it with colorful baubles. blue is preferred, and the shinier the better. enlivened with entertaining facts and anecdotes, extreme birds is an engaging celebration of nature's tremendous imagination. it will appeal to all readers, especially birders and naturalists.

great info and pictures well writenherds2
Saw this book at my Aunts and had to have my own. It gives info on landscaping to attract certain species, what plants attract and detract birds. Nesting habits, eating habits, water feature placements… You name it, it has it… THIS IS NOT A BIRDWATCHER GUIDE TO DIFFERENT SPECIES!! Although it does give some detail about bird species, it is not a bird watching handbook of hundreds of species. The is a detailed guide on how best to attract and keep birds in your yard and to create a great space for nature to thrive….keithmitchell1989
I bought this for a gift. When I received it I started paging through it. It was better than I expected. I actually bought one for myself. My nephew was really impressed with it.denishawrysia-0

I have one so gave it as a gift; Person receiving it was pleased.jucamp_7880
Birds of North America is a nice little paperback version with very good coverage of the subject. We like it. There was one slight problem, the book had some loose pages. We realize it was used, but thought it would not have this issue.mysoul16isbluebruce
