I'm a new birder and bought this book at the suggestion of a boat captain who sails out of Rockport on the Texas coast. He advertises as a dolphin-watching tour but he and his wife know the birds of the area, too. I was lucky enough to see and hear some Seaside Sparrows on the barrier islands just past the Intercoastal Waterway. The book is thorough and logically organized. I do wish, however, that it came in spiral bound that could lie flat when open. Would be nice to be able to put the open book down and use both hands on the binoculars or camera. Sibleys field guide is the best overall birding book .It's compact size fits easily in a backpack or large pant pocket. The book is rugged to carry for everyday use ,but could use a sealed case. This is an old standard. It has what you need, but not in an easily accessible presentation. The photos are good, but not great. They lack bright clean detail for easy ID. This guide contains a lot of information. but the type face is incredibly small making it difficult to read and what good is information that you can't read? To use this guide in the field you would need to carry a magnifying glass in addition to binoculars. My suggestion is that if you are considering buying this guide look at an actual copy at the library or bookstore to determine it's usefulness to you. Compare this to the Collins guide which I find much easier and more pleasant to use. I wish I would have read this review before buying the Sibley on line. Love the Birds.aa10abbott

Don't know too much about types of birds so this little book is great since it is arranged by color of bird. Otherwise I would be at a loss trying to identify the birds we see pass through our yard, stop at our feeders, build nests in our shrubs, etc. I would not have known the type of bird that became my friend and rode on my head or shoulder every day, several times per day for weeks. It all started when I bought my wife a bird feeder, we got so many birds but didn't know what half of them were. This book helped that. It concentrates on the breeds in our region (North America) that visit bird feeders. We didn't need a book about Eagles or Vultures and breeds we'd never see at out bird feeder (hope we don't get nasty birds). I have always been interested in wildlife. Since I recently retired I became very intrigued with the number of birds in my yard. I of course made my yard bird friendly with two bird baths, a bird feeder and several low growing shrubs and trees. Now that I've done that, all types of birds have been flocking to my yard. Most of the birds are yard sparrows, robins, bluejays, cardinals, blackbirds, woodpeckers and house wrens. With that said, I've got several new birds that are new to my home, that aren't all that recognizable to me. Therefore, I ordered the Reader's Digest Book of North American Birds from my local Walmart. I am so happy I purchased this book from Walmart at such a good price. This book has illustrations of more than 600 species, their full descriptions, habitat, food sources and much more. This book is definitely a great book to have for all new bird novices. I would highly recommend this book to all who are interested in bird watching in the backyard or any other wildlife local.
