A really good guide for the new/amateur bird watcher. Incredibly detailed pictures and an "easy find" section to give you a good idea what you are looking at. Bought this as a present but might have to get myself a copy. Highly recommended.g.rigri.4rd3jp
This guide may be small in size – very handy for keeping on a window sill for example, but contains all you need to know to identify all the birds you might see in your garden or in the countryside. They are grouped by colour as well as individually for quick look-up, and show you how to pick out key features such as size, colours & markings. It even tells you how to identify birds from how they walk, hop, feed & fly, as well as the calls they make. All in all, a thoroughly recommended book for the amateur watcher and bird lover! Howard Lindsayitaly_africa
I bought 2 of these books and gave them to my 2 sets of grandchildren. They had a competition as to who could identify the most birds in their gardens. A nice little book that you can also carry around on walks.fievelcasey

4. What It's Like To Be A Bird: From Flying To Nesting, Eating To Singing–What Birds Are Doing, And Why [Book]
Product Details:
The bird book for birders and nonbirders alike that will excite and inspire by providing a new and deeper understanding of what common, mostly backyard, birds are doing—and why: "can birds smell?" ; "is this the same cardinal that was at my feeder last year?" ; "do robins 'hear' worms?"" this special, large-format volume is geared as much to nonbirders as it is to the out-and-out obsessed, covering more than two hundred species and including more than 330 new illustrations by the author. while its focus is on familiar backyard birds—blue jays, nuthatches, chickadees—it also examines certain species that can be fairly easily observed, such as the seashore-dwelling atlantic puffin. david sibley's exacting artwork and wide-ranging expertise bring observed behaviors vividly to life. (for most species, the primary illustration is reproduced life-sized.) and while the text is aimed at adults—including fascinating new scientific research on the myriad ways birds have adapted to environmental changes—it is nontechnical, making it the perfect occasion for parents and grandparents to share their love of birds with young children, who will delight in the big, full-color illustrations of birds in action. unlike any other book he has written, what it's like to be a bird is poised to bring a whole new audience to david sibley's world of birds.
Reviews:
Big book and well put together. The content is not as in-depth as I'd like it. I didn't really get knowing what it's like to be a bird from the bird's perspective – more about the writer's perspective. The illustrations are only ok (for me they are not good). The author claims to be an artist – he tried but the illustrations do not have specific enough detail for me. I thought it was a big, pricey book for a rather superficial.
Astonishingly fun to peruse, I bought it to give as a gift- now I want one for myself! Spectacular illustrations and wondrous facts, easy to read and entertaining as well as educational. Fabulous.Lee A.
Bought this book for my sister, an avid birder, but it appeared so interesting with beautiful illustrations, almost kept it for myself. She loves it and felt it was such a thoughtful gift. Excellent material whether you are a birder or not!Susanne

Reviews:
Very well organized descriptions of birds. Great resource for new birders like myself.brro403
This book has a lot of both basic and more advanced information about birding.tlerm
This is an old standard. It has what you need, but not in an easily accessible presentation. The photos are good, but not great. They lack bright clean detail for easy ID. This guide contains a lot of information. but the type face is incredibly small making it difficult to read and what good is information that you can't read? To use this guide in the field you would need to carry a magnifying glass in addition to binoculars. My suggestion is that if you are considering buying this guide look at an actual copy at the library or bookstore to determine it's usefulness to you. Compare this to the Collins guide which I find much easier and more pleasant to use. I wish I would have read this review before buying the Sibley on line. Love the Birds.aa10abbott
