I'm a new birder and bought this book at the suggestion of a boat captain who sails out of Rockport on the Texas coast. He advertises as a dolphin-watching tour but he and his wife know the birds of the area, too. I was lucky enough to see and hear some Seaside Sparrows on the barrier islands just past the Intercoastal Waterway. The book is thorough and logically organized. I do wish, however, that it came in spiral bound that could lie flat when open. Would be nice to be able to put the open book down and use both hands on the binoculars or camera. I am not a bird watcher although I have wondered, from time to time, what sorts of birds I was seeing in my neighborhoods. This goes well beyond a childish birding guide, though. First, this is a top-quality board book, hardcover, in gorgeous, full-page color, with sturdy “pages” made to delight very young children for years. The inviting, colorful illustrations are (incredibly) beautiful, created with what appear to be hand-painted papers, arranged in lovely collages, using vivid colors — and visually intriguing patterns — to realistically represent different birds common to North America. Each numbered group of birds appears in an appropriate background to where one is likely to see them. The information provided in the text — with engaging rhymes, and clarifying sidebar factoids — is charming and fun to read out loud. Simply put, and without exaggeration, this is — in my opinion — one of the finest board books ever printed. I adore this book. Every single page. There are also basic factoids, directed at adult readers, to make us all seem more knowledgeable about the birds around us than we might actually be. Each bird is portrayed in colorful, recognizable, and engaging ways. Living in the city I was curious as to weather or not I could attract different types of birds into my back yard. I brought this book because I thought it offered the best information pertaining to the kinds of feeders and habitat to bring the birds into my yard. As of three weeks into my experiment it seems the only birds that feed at the feeders right now are sparrows. I'm content at this present time to watch the sparrows and hope in time, and a change in the weather will bring a different variety of bird to the feeders and my yard. I think the book has opened a whole new world as to structure, gardening, and watching for different species of bird. There are many projects in the book to keep a person busy, such as the section on building your own feeders and bird houses.
