A standard size school pocket folder is too tall to fit also. I cannot put the matching water bottle in the side pocket because the pockets are tiny. Sadly I am going to have to order her another book bag for preschool to fit her folder, lovey, simple modern water bottle & lunch box. The shark print is fun and overall, the book bag seems to be well made. My son had the junior version for several years at day care and needed a larger size book bag for kindergarten. The recommended navy-blue thread for the monogram looked like it would be washed out against the shark print. I went with orange bold text for the monogram to really stand out against the busy print and I am happy I did. I wish the letters were bigger though. I know five-year-olds are tough on stuff, but my son scrapped a chunk off the reflective piece on the front pocket within the first week of school. I’m kind of annoyed about that considering this book bag was over $50 (with monogram), but oh well. Hopefully it will hold up for several more years.MamaShark
I am somewhat happy with my purchase. Backpack is very cute and sturdy. However, I chose to have the backpack monogrammed and the font is so small you can’t really see it. Not what I was hoping for. My daughter does have a longer name but I had a friend whose child’s name was longer and it was bigger. Same font as I used. It looks like they used the font for the lunchbox on the backpack. When I called customer service the lady was very dismissive and wouldn’t even listen to what I was trying to say. My daughter bought this really cute alligator backpack for her senior year. Sadly the strap is ripping from the bag making it unusable. They will not replace the bag. i bought this backpack my freshman year of college (currently a senior) and have been wearing it ever since then. i had the unfortunate luck recently of getting into a car accident in which i had my backpack with me and I had set it next to the officers car while i was waiting for the tow truck to come. upon its arrival, the officer had to move his car to get more in line with the truck, forgetting that my bag was there. i had my computer, nintendo switch, among various other FRAGILE items. once i was done crying over the possibility that everything in my bag was ruined, i went to check and to my amazement! nothing was harmed! everything was perfectly fine and the only thing that was “ “harmed” was my bag that now proudly wears a tire mark on the backside and straps. this bag saved my college career and animal crossing village from a fatal death. long story short, this bag rocks, highly recommend!!!!sumerdays
I am extremely disappointed in this purchase. The backpack hangs uncomfortably low (I am 5'6) and due to a "minimalist design choice" the straps only be tightened slightly, so even at the tighest setting the weight sits very awkwardly on my back. I had it measured and it sits nearly SIX INCHES below my shoulders, and the bottom sits far below my hips! The recommended positioning for backpacks is one to two inches below the shoulders and sitting at the hips. If I filled this backpack with books or groceries, it would be a recipe for back pain. When I contacted customer service about how this backpack hangs, they told me that this is a design feature and I would have to pay shipping to have it returned. This has been an extremely disappointing experience and I will not be shopping at this site again. Beware of this backpack!Zeda
I have two Herschel’s, the xl and the small classic. These are great fundamental designed backpacks. I don’t know what folks expect from this design. Far more ergonomic that the Kanken’s…If you load them up with 20 lbs. of schoolbooks and a 3 lb laptop, you better look elsewhere and seriously, nothing will be good for that. These are for casual carry, nothing serious. But worth every cent, rugged and comfortable..David Arnold

My daughter loves this backpack so much she wears it around the house! It's sturdy, has a yellow interior with a lego pattern, and a nice stabilizing clip in the front that fastens over the chest (her favorite part). The hanging part on the top is strong, and there is reflective detailing throughout, but especially facing forward on the straps when it is worn. The straps are nice and padded. The top strap already has a tear in it. I am soooo disappointing. My son is only in first grade, we talk to and from school so no wear and tear on a bus and it's only been not even a month of school. I have ordered this backpack 3 years in a row for my high school child. It is durable enough for those heavy binders and books. The bottom is made so belongings will not rip through the mesh. I have bought other backpacks, including the Nike brand that did not last 1 month. It is one of the larger bags too, so it can hold his binders, a book, lunchbox and more, AND the straps on his back are padded.
