Amzing insights and I'm not even done with the first chapter yet! Already I am reexamining my life and forming the intention to dedicate the rest of it to the things that really matter. Yeah…it's that good!karycortan0
Exceptional book if you are ready for it, and that is the core issue. It offers a significant insight into a reality few are aware of and even fewer can accept. In introducing you to the deeper philosophy of Buddhism the author also links it with the various traditions and sects that offer a wide spectrum of views on the most subtle aspects. You don't have to read it all because there is much that enables you to understand how to live a life in harmony with all that is. The specific focus on dying and the means to ensure your continued journey would need far more support than the book alone can give you, but it does explain the process. I have personally found that reading it has helped me attune more to peaceful living, and appreciate the stages of dying that allow a peaceful transition. I do not feel I am yet in any state to make the ultimate steps however, and am content to allow myself the freedom to chose when and if I might be ready.rexb1444
Thank you so so much! Ive been meaning to finish this book after losing it a couple months ago. The picture left inside of it was a beautiful surprise and put a huge smile on my face. Grateful 🙂jesslusczyk

This is one of the best books I have ever read. If you are interested in growing spiritually this book is for you. If you have interest in Buddhism or not this book is a must read.leesblue
This book got me firmly back on track spiritually some years back when it came out. I have probably bought eight copies since because I always wind up giving my much-loved, dog-eared versions away. Read this book if you are thinking about embracing Buddhism or simply finding out more about it. Remember too that Buddhist Mind Training principles can make a good Christian great, good Catholic great, good Jew great – and so on and so forth. The goal is not to convert, it is to enrich. Das is a Jew from New York. He is a boomer who followed his heart east in the seventies and was blessed in being able to find and learn from some great masters. So if you'd rather read the fundamentals from someone who committed himself than than purchase a plane ticket, ride a Yak cart and drink butter tea for 20 years, buy this book! It changed … and continues to change … my life. It is (gasp) the most important book I have ever owned.greatestatejewelry
A great and very enlightening book! I am glad I got this book to add to my library. I am sure that many would love to have this book. It is simple and easy to read. It has the very essence of the philiosophy of what is Buddhism.ivan226travel

This book is so beautifully written, insightful and inspiration for your journey into parenthood.Danica
This is a beautiful and supportive book. I find it especially useful in my aim to parent naturally and gently. Many "ahah" moments and pages dog-eared. I initially borrowed this book from the library but wanted my own copy so I purchased. Unfortunately, I noticed a massive difference in the quality of print between the two books. But overall, this will be on my list to give as gifts or read when I'm needing a parenting pick me up.Rachel
13. The Heart Of The Buddha: Entering The Tibetan Buddhist Path [Book]

Product Details:
The basic teachings of buddhism as they relate to everyday life—presented by the esteemed tibetan meditation master in the heart of the buddha, chögyam trungpa examines the basic teachings of buddhism and places them within the context of daily life. divided into three parts, the book begins with a discussion about the open, inquisitive, and good-humored qualities of the “heart of the buddha”—an “enlightened gene” that everyone possesses. next, chögyam trungpa moves to the stages of the buddhist path, presenting the three vehicles—hinayana, mahayana, and vajrayana—that carry the buddhist practitioner toward enlightenment. finally, he describes the direct application of buddhist teachings to topics as varied as relationships, drinking, children, and money. the heart of the buddha reflects trungpa’s great appreciation for western culture and deep understanding of the tibetan buddhist tradition, which enabled him to teach westerners in an effective, contemporary way.

Although it's kind of a pricey book, and difficult to read on my opinion, if you're an expert on Buddhism and would like to know more this is it.dipsas1

The four noble truths are well known as the buddha's first and most essential explanation of his enlightened realizations. the truths diagnose the human existential crisis–suffering and its origin–and prescribe a solution–cessation and the path. to understand the four noble truths is to understand buddhism as a whole. in the four noble truths, geshe tashi draws on his decades of training in tibetan buddhism to illuminate these truths for a modern audience. his respectful engagement with buddhists outside his own tradition and his insights into western culture make this book refreshing. it will reward even those already acquainted with the fundamentals of buddhism.
Reviews:
[Volume 1: Four Noble Truths] This is one of Geshe Tashi's six books in the Foundation of Buddhist Thought series. These books were developed from a 2-year course that he teaches at the Jamyang / Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FTMP) centre in the UK. The course is also available online (for a fee). This book, like the others in the set, is quite comprehensive but eminently readable. The books suit those new to Buddhism as well as more experienced readers. They are so good that they prompted me to enrol in his online course.

"from the introduction: it was written primarily for those who have or might develop an interest in the very basic buddhist teachings associated with what tibetan traditions call the "first turning" of the wheel of the dharma. here is grouped teachings on proper conduct (vinaya) and discourses (sutras) and commentaries (shastras) on basic teachings which came to be gathered together under the rubric of higher dharma (abhidharma). the teachings on higher dharma have, to date, are, for the most part, rather technical, consisting of main points and enumerated lists of basic factors (dharmas) of phenomena mentioned in the buddha sutras. there is a rich codification of such teachings preserved in the pali language, and thereafter in the theravadin abhidhamma literature. in addition, there are a different set of texts used by the living traditions associated with indo-tibetan buddhist lineages, preserved in sanskrit (and, also in translation into tibetan, chinese and mongolian languages). it is the indo-tibetan traditions which are explored in this book. i have chosen to give an account, an approach which strives to bring out a lively, relevant and novel way to apply some of the key approaches of the higher dharma to a contemporary non-specialist readership"–

The most prominent expert on Tibetan Buddhism in the West offers a translation of this essential book of Tibetan philosophy that captures the true spirit and poetry of the original work–a profound book that reveals the nature of the mind and its manifestations and offers pure enlightenment.lasonic09
There are some who argue this might not be the most faithful translation of the Bardo Thodol (Tibetan Book of the Dead), but it certainly is one of the most friendly and understandable. This is a complex subject matter, even for those who follow Tibetan Buddhism. As a Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University, Thurman has made The Tibetan Book of the Dead quite accessible and fairly easy to understand, by first taking the reader through a brief Tibetan history lesson before delving into the worlds of The Between (the Bardos). Highly recommended.pillman

This is one very small book. As someone who knows almost nothing about Buddhism, I found this book to be an excellent starting point to begin to get a feel for what Buddhism is about. It is well and clearly written . I think that it serves its purpose as a primer for further reading and study for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the subject. I am not yet ready to be a convert, but I will certainly be reading more of this writers works.cpsretired03
I like to reflect on each page. Written by the Dalai Lama, there is only one or two sentences to a page, but each is incredibly insightful and full of meaning.Jessamie the ethical engineer

This book by Cambodian monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, should be considered his introduction to Buddhism. It profits most from Nhat Hanh's easily accessible writing style. Within this text readers will find the classic stories of the Buddha's major life-changing events, such as the Buddha's "Deer Park" awakening & "Turning the Dharma Wheel Sutra." Next, Nhat Hahn provides ample definitions of Buddhist words & concepts, such as: Three Jewels, Three Doors of Liberation, Three Dharma Seals; Four Immeasurable Minds, Four Noble Truths; Five Wonderful Precepts, Five Powers; Six Harmonies; The Noble Eightfold Path; Twelve Links of Causation. Nhat Hanh's message is that Buddhism is path toward individual enlightenment. Meditative thinking is a method. Individuals are encouraged to consider how past and present community influences have impeded or fostered their enlightenment.
