7. Essential Buddhism: A Complete Guide To Beliefs And Practices [Book]

Product Details:
Four hundred million people call themselves buddhists today. yet most westerners know little about this powerful, eastern-spawned faith. how did it begin? what do its adherents believe? why are so many westerners drawn to it? essential buddhism responds to these questions and many more, offering an accessible, global perspective on the religion's past, present, and future. it identifies how the principal concepts and practices originated and evolved through diverse cultural adaptations into three basic formats: * theraveda (including vipassana, brought from vietnam in the 1960s and including such practitioners as jack kornfield and jon kapat-zinn) * mahayana (including zen buddhism, originally brought to america by japanese teachers after world war ii and popularized by jack kerouac and thomas merton) * vajrayana (including tibetan buddhism, from the teachers who fled the chinese takeover of tibet in the 1950s as well as the dalai lama, and embraced by allen ginsberg, richard gere, and countless others) essential buddhism is the single best resource for the novice and the expert alike, exploring the depths of buddhism's popularity and illuminating its tenets and sensible approach to living. written in the lucid prose of a longtime professional storyteller, and full of buddhist tales, scriptural quotes, ancient stories, and contemporary insights, essential buddhism is the first complete guide to the faith and the phenomenon.
Reviews:
ESSENTIAL BUDDHISM encompasses the legend of the birth of Buddhisms founder, Siddhartha Gautama and his journey to enlightenment which led to the founding of Buddhism in 531 BC. The book then covers an extensive history of this 2500 year old religion, including the various factions of the faith and the individuals who played an important part in them. The second part of the book entails Buddhisms surprisingly recent foray into the United States and some conjecture on its future here. Maguires history of Buddhism in the Americas is especially interesting in light of the legend of a 5th-century Buddhism monk who traveled to Mexico. The lack of hard evidence not withstanding, this is a historical note that begs investigation beyond the Guatama-la and Maya-n Indians. Unfortunately, these details are buried by more than 1500 years. A great deal of the first part of Essential Buddhism intertwines the history with the beliefs of the faith. Maguire calls upon the events which led to The Four Noble Truths and The Nobel Eightfold Path, which gives credence to these beliefs. Any Christian who scoffs at Siddharthas revelations needs to look more closely at his/her own faith and the Old Testament teachings from God to the prophets, Moses going up empty-handed and coming down with tablets of stone twice! as well as the many angelic and divine messages given to those in the New Testament stories. The chapters on The Three Vehicles of Buddhism go into great detail on the Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana disciplines. As this is the Essential Guide to Buddhism, these details make sense, but to a non-Buddhist even one studying the faith the chapter read a lot like a non-Christian being told in great detail the difference between being a Baptist, a Methodist and a Presbyterian. Yes, they are different but no, its not all that interesting! The chapter on Buddhist Beliefs was the most valuable in understanding Buddhism. Much of my knowledge comes from the entertainment field, new-age hipsters and the understanding that what goes around, comes around, as we reap, so shall we sow and the school-yard threat that were gonna get whats coming to us is all wrapped in the Buddhism belief of karma. This chapter enlightened me, if I may use that word, as to the core beliefs of Buddhism. Essential Buddhism is an excellent guide to anyone interested in the story of Buddhism, its beliefs and practices and some theories on what the future holds for Buddhism in the United States.jimterisam

Product Details:
This landmark collection is the definitive introduction to the buddha's teachings – in his own words. the american scholar-monk bhikkhu bodhi, whose voluminous translations have won widespread acclaim, here presents selected discourses of the buddha from the pali canon, the earliest record of what the buddha taught. divided into ten thematic chapters, in the buddha's words reveals the full scope of the buddha's discourses, from family life and marriage to renunciation and the path of insight. a concise, informative introduction precedes each chapter, guiding the reader toward a deeper understanding of the texts that follow. this book contains: clear translations of the buddha’s original teachings thoughtfully curated selections from the pali canon chapters on the buddha’s life, rebirth, suffering, liberation, and practice a foreword by his holiness the dalai lama in the buddha's words allows even readers unacquainted with buddhism to grasp the significance of the buddha's contributions to our world heritage. taken as a whole, these texts bear eloquent testimony to the breadth and intelligence of the buddha's teachings, and point the way to an ancient yet ever-vital path. practitioners and scholars alike will find this systematic presentation indispensable. dive into the world of the buddha through these easy-to-read english translations of the pali canon. the pali canon is the literary, intellectual, and spiritual foundation of theravada buddhism. this volume, being organized in a progressive manner "from the simple to the difficult, from the elementary to the profound," makes it well-suited for those looking for an accessible introduction to the theravadin scriptural corpus, as well as being a valuable resource for those familiar with the pali canon but wanting a more structured presentation of the materials.
Reviews:
Bhikkhu Bodhi does an excellent job of bringing the Suttas to life. The world-reknowned Buddhist Scholar-monk has produced an anthology of discourses from the Sutta Pitaka, arranged by a framework he has devised, which introduces the Suttas from a 'happiness in the here and now' right through to the ultimate happiness of Nibbana. There is an excellent introduction to the text, where you get a good idea of Bodhi's reasons for compiling this text, the framework of the text and also his suggestions on how one should go about reading it. In the introduction is a detailed account of the history of the Pali Canon, and why it is so important. The beginning of each chapter also is marked by an introduction by Bodhi which further outlines the importance of each Sutta and how should go about interpreting it. As with any of Bhikkhu Bodhi's works, there are abundant notes to accompany any passages one might have trouble interpreting, although it must be mentioned that some of the notes will only appeal to those with a scholarly bent. My personal opinion is that this text is well suited to anyone who has been introduced to Buddhism and is looking for a deeper knowledge and understanding of what the Buddha actually taught. It's also great for anyone who already has a good understanding of the Buddha's message and is looking to deepen their understanding. Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi mentions in his introduction that he hopes that reading this book will spur on the latter group of readers to 'take the plunge' into the Sutta Pitaka proper, and that's certainly something I now intend to do. So thank you Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi, for all your hard work.

Great insightful and character development book.Stuart H.
This book by Cambodian monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, should be considered his introduction to Buddhism. It profits most from Nhat Hanh's easily accessible writing style. Within this text readers will find the classic stories of the Buddha's major life-changing events, such as the Buddha's "Deer Park" awakening & "Turning the Dharma Wheel Sutra." Next, Nhat Hahn provides ample definitions of Buddhist words & concepts, such as: Three Jewels, Three Doors of Liberation, Three Dharma Seals; Four Immeasurable Minds, Four Noble Truths; Five Wonderful Precepts, Five Powers; Six Harmonies; The Noble Eightfold Path; Twelve Links of Causation. Nhat Hanh's message is that Buddhism is path toward individual enlightenment. Meditative thinking is a method. Individuals are encouraged to consider how past and present community influences have impeded or fostered their enlightenment. 19. Why Buddhism Is True: The Science And Philosophy Of Meditation And Enlightenment [Book]

Product Details:
In this “sublime” (the new yorker), pathbreaking book, robert wright shows how taking this promise seriously can change your life—how it can loosen the grip of anxiety, regret, and hatred, and how it can deepen your appreciation of beauty and of other people. he also shows why this transformation works, drawing on the latest in neuroscience and psychology, and armed with an acute understanding of human evolution. this book is the culmination of a personal journey that began with wright’s landmark book on evolutionary psychology, the moral animal, and deepened as he immersed himself in meditative practice and conversed with some of the world’s most skilled meditators. the result is a story that is “provocative, informative and…deeply rewarding” (the new york times book review), and as entertaining as it is illuminating.
Reviews:
Great book for those who would like to explore many lessons from the non-supernatural side of Buddhism, the study of "metacognition" approached convergently from Western Buddhism and Neuroscience. As one who has enjoyed a silent weekend retreat at IMS in Barre, Massachusetts, I enjoyed the many references to that center.helfant123

He is now converted to Buddhism and I am so happy he has found his path in this world. This product is very well written. There was nothing to dislike about this book.kandice_rose
