Reviews:
Have read Marcus Aurelius The Medtitations many years ago but this interpretation has been invaluable in me truly understand further the life of Marcus and the lessons to be taken from how modern psychology has utilised the wisdom of the ancient texts. Well worth a read even if you are familiar with the original works. The philosopher
While I'm still new to Stoicism, I found that How To Think Like A Roman Emperor as well as other books by the author, Donald Robertson, are easy to read and understand. He writes in a story style instead of just listing quotes and principals. Maybe older, more experienced Stoics prefer the later, but I get more out of stories than just listing facts. I bought this print version as I prefer to have a book in my hands that I can page back or forward as needed. This edition is nicely printed on medium weight stock in a good size font. It is a nice size to hold – 8.5 x 5.5 .The message inside is even better.afman4149
The nonfiction part is very informative. The fiction part is not as compelling. I would recommend this book as revealing the Stoic philosophy in relevant and modern language. Philosophy is often not readable, but this work is very appropriate for any reader.jaby4431
2. Meditations : A New Translation By Marcus Aurelius
Product Details:
Nearly two thousand years after it was written, meditations remains profoundly relevant for anyone seeking to lead a meaningful life. few ancient works have been as influential as the meditations of marcus aurelius, philosopher and emperor of rome (a.d. 161-180). a series of spiritual exercises filled with wisdom, practical guidance, and profound understanding of human behavior, it remains one of the greatest works of spiritual and ethical reflection ever written. marcuss insights and advice–on everything from living in the world to coping with adversity and interacting with others–have made the meditations required reading for statesmen and philosophers alike, while generations of ordinary readers have responded to the straightforward intimacy of his style. for anyone who struggles to reconcile the demands of leadership with a concern for personal integrity and spiritual well-being, the meditations remains as relevant now as it was two thousand years ago. in gregory hayss new translation–the first in thirty-five years–marcuss thoughts speak with a new immediacy. in fresh and unencumbered english, hays vividly conveys the spareness and compression of the original greek text. never before have marcuss insights been so directly and powerfully presented. with an introduction that outlines marcuss life and career, the essentials of stoic doctrine, the style and construction of the meditations, and the works ongoing influence, this edition makes it possible to fully rediscover the thoughts of one of the most enlightened and intelligent leaders of any era.

6. Meditations – (Dover Thrift Editions: Philosophy) By Marcus Aurelius (Paperback)
Product Details:
Stirring reflections on the human condition provide a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled roman warrior and emperor of the 2nd century. one of the world's most famous and influential books, meditations, by the roman emperor marcus aurelius (a.d. 121 180), incorporates the stoic precepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. ascending to the imperial throne in a.d. 161, aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. in the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. reflecting the emperor's own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct, this eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one's personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. and in the face of inevitable pain, loss, and death – the suffering at the core of life – aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one's control and a focus on one's own will and perception. presented here in a specially modernized version of the classic george long translation, this updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. it not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled roman of the second century but also offers today's readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life.
Reviews:
Marcus Aurelius –one of the great and good emperors of Rome. His commentary, thoughts, and meditations. Good inspirational reading. This issue is a rather cheap binding—that is OK. I purchased it to read –not to collect. If it falls apart in six months or so, I do not care (can not beat the price!). What is written is still great.countryandstuff
For me this a hard book to read, I can't say it is going to be for everyone. It is interesting reading but you might find yourself rereading a pharagraph or two . I'am not faulting the book really .So be prepared to get a dictionary to understand some words.dwdred2012
I was genuinely looking forward to to this collection of thoughts for a variety of reasons. I wasn't expecting the literal translation that arrived. I suppose it's preferred for accuracy in the telling, but it would find greater popularity if some literary license were taken to the extent that it read more like a contemporary novel. The wisdom remains however and there is much to learn from one of the last "Great", Roman Emperors.marvincleaningup2011
7. Meditations: With Selected Correspondence [Book]
Product Details:
'do not act as if you had ten thousand years to live … while you have life in you, while you still can, make yourself good.' the meditations of marcus aurelius (ad 121-180) is a private notebook of philosophical reflections, written by a roman emperor probably on military campaign in germany. in short, highly charged comments, marcus draws on stoic philosophy to confront challenges that he felt acutely, but which are also shared by all human beings – the looming presence of death, making sense of one's social role and projects, the moral significance of the universe. they bring us closer to the personality of the emperor, who is often disillusioned with his own status and with human activities in general; they are both an historical document and a remarkable spiritual diary. this translation by robin hard brings out the eloquence and universality of marcus' thoughts. the introduction and notes by christopher gill place the meditations firmly in the ancient philosophical context. a selection of marcus' correspondence with his tutor fronto broadens the picture of the emperor as a person and thinker. about the series: for over 100 years oxford world's classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. each affordable volume reflects oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

8. Marcus Aurelius: A Life [Book]
Product Details:
Marcus aurelius (121-180 ad) is one of the great figures of antiquity who still speaks to us today, more than two thousand years after his death. his meditations has been compared by john stuart mill to the sermon on the mount. but marcus aurelius was much more than a philosopher. as emperor he stabilized the empire, issued numerous reform edicts, and defended the borders with success. his life itself represented the fulfillment of plato's famous dictum that mankind will prosper only when philosophers are rulers and rulers philosophers. frank mclynn's marcus aurelius, based on all available original sources, is the definitive and most vivid biography to date of this monumental historical figure.

Reviews:
Ryan introduces the reader to the lives of the Stoics from Zeno the founder to Marcus Aurelius the only Philosopher King. It was very insightful and well researched but it is written from with slight political bias referencing modern day politics which did not really need to be included. Some aspects of the book were examined with a modern day political lens which is rather unfair comparison of todays values in relation to the values of 2000 years ago. Other than that it is a very good book. The Modern Day Stoic
Very small niche for this book. I think time better spent on reading the philosophy rather than the individual.Nic
11. Marcus Aurelius [Book]
Product Details:
In this new study, john sellars offers a fresh examination of marcus aurelius' meditations as a work of philosophy by placing it against the background of the tradition of stoic philosophy to which marcus was committed. the meditations of marcus aurelius is a perennial bestseller, attracting countless readers drawn to its unique mix of philosophical reflection and practical advice. the emperor is usually placed alongside seneca and epictetus as one of three great roman stoic authors, but he wears his philosophy lightly, not feeling the need to state explicitly the ideas standing behind the reflections that he was writing for himself. as a consequence, his standing as a philosopher has often been questioned. challenging claims that marcus aurelius was merely an eclectic thinker, that the meditations do not fit the model of a work of philosophy, that there are no arguments in the work, and that it only contains superficial moral advice, sellars shows that he was in constant dialogue with his stoic predecessors, engaging with themes drawn from all three parts of stoicism: logic, physics, and ethics. the image of marcus aurelius that emerges is of a committed stoic, engaging with a wide range of philosophical topics, motivated by the desire to live a good life. this volume will be of interest to scholars and students of both classics and philosophy.

16. Meditations Of Marcus Aurelius (Wisehouse Classics Edition) [Book]
Product Details:
Meditations (medieval greek: ta eis heauton, literally "to himself") is a series of personal writings by marcus aurelius, roman emperor from 161 to 180 ad, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on stoic philosophy. marcus aurelius wrote the 12 books of the meditations in koine greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. it is possible that large portions of the work were written at sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. some of it was written while he was positioned at aquincum on campaign in pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the first book was written when he was campaigning against the quadi on the river granova (modern-day hron) and the second book was written at carnuntum. it is unlikely that marcus aurelius ever intended the writings to be published and the work has no official title, so "meditations" is one of several titles commonly assigned to the collection. these writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs."

This is the first of two volumes in the marcus aurelius complete works in the stoicism in plain english series. meditations by emperor marcus aurelius (121-180 ce) is probably the most beloved, uplifting, and widely read classic of stoic philosophy. marcus ruled the greatest empire the world had seen up until his time. yet he faced several problems, both personal and political. his empire was repeatedly invaded, cassius revolted against him, his wife was unfaithful, and his son was incompetent and, later, cruel. but aurelius was a stoic and took everything in his stride. as he got closer to the end of his life, he began writing his thoughts in his journal. there were twelve "books" in all. they were not meant for publication and had no titles. these twelve books were collectively known as to himself, and are now generally called meditations. this is the plain english translation, updated by chuck chakrapani of the stoic gym.

19. Marcus Aurelius By Aurelius Marcus
Product Details:
Marcus aurelius (121-180 ce), roman emperor and stoic philosopher, born at rome, received training under his guardian and uncle emperor antoninus pius (reigned 138-161), who adopted him. he was converted to stoicism and henceforward studied and practised philosophy and law. a gentle man, he lived in agreement and collaboration with antoninus pius. he married pius's daughter and succeeded him as emperor in march 161, sharing some of the burdens with lucius verus.marcus's reign soon saw fearful national disasters from flood, earthquakes, epidemics, threatened revolt (in britain), a parthian war, and pressure of barbarians north of the alps. from 169 onwards he had to struggle hard against the german quadi, marcomani, vandals, and others until success came in 174. in 175 (when faustina died) he pacified affairs in asia after a revolt by avidius. war with germans was renewed during which he caught some disease and died by the danube in march 180. the famous meditations of marcus aurelius (not his title; he simply calls them 'the matters addressed to himself') represents reflections written in periods of solitude during the emperor's military campaigns. originally intended for his private guidance and self-admonition, the meditations has endured as a potent expression of stoic belief. it is a central text for students of stoicism as well as a unique personal guide to the moral life.
