The best book you can buy is youre looking for a comprehensive book with many levels.tamsk1
It has very little to offer anyone over 50 just starting out on Pilates. Most exercises don't cater for the diminishing flexibility which comes with age. More attention needed to appropriate breathing exercises together with recommendations for duration or number of sequences. In practice, I found a more suitable book for this age group is Alan Herman's 'A Busy Persons Guide to Pilates'.alanrob47

6. Pilates Evolution: The 21st Century [Book]

Product Details:
Much has changed in the 21st century since 1934 when joseph pilates wrote his first book, your health, about fitness and health. in 1945, he followed up that first expression of fitness theories and principles with his detailed and definitive book of exercises, return to life through contrology. both of these original books were copyrighted and republished by presentation dynamics in 2000 in the book pilates' primer: the millennium edition. – presentation dynamics has now added 96 new pages of content to this book with the release of pilates evolution for the 21st century. it details the very latest in 21st-century modifications, methodology, and enhancements to joseph pilates' exercises. the new text opens with an introduction to 21st-century evolutionary developments, discussing how pilates' original students became the next generation of teachers. it also describes how these students have, in fact, gone on to develop a wide range of variations in their teachings, bringing new science and techniques to new variations in body positioning, balancing, centering, and aligning. in some cases, the teachers use exercise props, and in other cases, this new generation of teachers brings pilates' methodologies from the ground and mat into standing positions. other variations in instruction blend pilates' principles with dance, yoga, and various sports to make pilates instruction applicable to a growing number of students and disciplines. – this new book organizes the new pilates developments into 10 primary chapters, each focusing on a different 21st-century specialty. each of these new chapters focuses on a different major area of pilates evolution, such as standing or circular work, sports-specific pilates, or pilates exercise variation with individual props. each chapter introduces the technique, concept, prop, or emphasis, while the chapter ends with a list of resources from companies specializing in training, certification, videos, or books. the remaining pages present new exercises in the same manner that pilates introduced his exercises a century ago; that is, a photographic sequence tracing the exercise combined with step-by-step instructions for the student. (there are two or more demonstrative exercises in each of the first nine chapters.) two facing pages include a series of photographs on the right side with step-by-step instructions on the left side. visual sequencing allows you to use or teach a novel exercise that is both effective and fun. the instructions include explanations of the various aspects of the exercise, along with modifications for less- or more-advanced bodies. – joseph pilates based his work on the concept of a balanced body and mind and on the approach espoused by the early greeks. new practitioners of pilates' forms and exercises in the 21st century continue to expand upon this earlier work by presenting a variety of creative new approaches involving circular movements, standing postures, and core strengthening exercises using props such as tubes, weights, poles, bands, magic circles, mini-balls, stability balls, foam rollers, and more. – joseph pilates has been nothing short of revolutionary in his impact on the world of fitness and exercise. you will learn in this book his original observations and conclusions about people's approach to physical fitness. he describes the results of decades of scientific study, experimentation, and research into the variety of troubles and ills that upset the balance of body and mind. you will also learn every single one of his original 34 mat exercises taught to his own students. – living testimony to the validity of his own teachings, joseph pilates shares in these writings his fundamental tenets of posture, body mechanics, correct breathing, spinal flexibility, physical education, and his law of natural exercises. it is a fascinating look into pilates' original thinking and represents the foundation of an entire discipline embraced by fitness enthusiasts, health educators, and exercise trainers around the world.

7. The Pilates Bible: The Definitive Guide To Pilates Exercises [Book]

Product Details:
The pilates bibleappeals to readers who want a comprehensive understanding of this exercise method–its origin, principles, key concepts, and benefits–in addition to detailed instructions, complete with beautiful step-by-step color pictures, describing how to practise pilates safely and effectively. joseph pilates (1880-1967), who was plagued by illness as a child in germany, developed his unique movement system over many years by combining observations about what energized and aligned the body with fitness techniques of his day. in 1925, he immigrated to the united states and set up a studio to introduce his holistic technique. the system is based on six principles: breathing, centering, control, concentration, precision, and flowing movement. instruction begins with fundamentals like finding the "scoop" and engaging the "powerhouse." then gentle movement to stabilize the back and the pelvis is introduced. each exercise builds on the one before it. once practitioners master the basics, they are ready for the beginner's program, where they learn how to move using the principles. the intermediate program progresses to more complex exercises that encourage moving with flow, greater precision and concentration, and integrating the breath. the advanced program offers more challenging positions requiring greater strength, stamina, and coordination. comprehensive instructions at each level provide exercise goals, common errors to avoid, and modifications to help those who may experience difficulty.

Product Details:
A comprehensive, take-anywhere exercise program designed to improve men's strength, flexibility, balance, and posture have years of office work wreaked havoc on your posture? could your tennis or golf game use a boost? do you appear or feel older than your age? or do you carry yourself in a manner that expresses strength, power, and peak performance to everyone around you? in recent years, pilates has become a popular exercise program, especially among women. many books on the subject show lithe female bodies stretched across their covers. top pilates instructor daniel lyon jr. aims to break the preconception that pilates only benefits and appeals to women. "this couldn't be further from the truth," he asserts. "joseph pilates was a cigar-smoking boxer, acrobat, and gymnast, and he developed his exercise program from that background for men first." likewise, lyon designed this book specifically with men in mind, as the number of male pilates practitioners — among them professional athletes, actors, businessmen, and other high-profile personalities — has rocketed to about three million and continues to grow. for athletes, working stiffs, and men recovering from injuries, lyon offers the first comprehensive exercise program of its kind. he walks you through forty "traditional mat" exercises and more than sixty "reformer on the mat" exercises — each one brilliantly illustrated — in an inspiring self-guided program that adapts to all experience levels and requires nothing more than floor space, an exercise mat, and the desire to look and feel your best. using the pilates method of engaging the strongest parts of the body, or the "powerhouse" (joseph pilates's term for the abdominals, hips, lower back muscles, and buttocks), and integrating all other body parts from this core, lyon's program targets trouble spots for men and helps them achieve strong, lean, masculine physiques. the complete book of pilates for men will deliver quick and long-term results to any man who seeks optimal fitness and a competitive edge in all aspects of his life.

Product Details:
This book is the first to illustrate the essential connection between the functional anatomy of the body’s core and its application during pilates’ fundamental core exercises. focusing on the inherent potential of the human body to stabilize and move, dr. evan osar and marylee bussard combine the most current research around core stabilization with six fundamental pilates principles to offer simple, easy-to-use strategies for relieving discomfort and improving pain-free movement. with more than 290 full-color illustrations, functional anatomy of the pilates core provides both pilates practitioners and professional teachers with a comprehensive understanding of how the core functions and how stabilization helps promote health and proper movement patterns through the development of balanced muscles, joint alignment, and core control.the authors apply current research on neuroplasticity, the brain's capacity to reorganize itself by developing new neuronal connections, and on the function of fascia, the matrix-like connective tissue of the body, to explain the six fundamental principles of pilates—centering, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow. they show how to avoid muscle imbalances, chronic tightness, and pain by incorporating the principles of functional anatomy during exercise. readers learn how to: – achieve the alignment, breathing, and control required for developing optimal posture and movement – alleviate non-optimal habits that relate to common postural dysfunction, muscle imbalances, and chronic tightness – integrate the fundamental pilates exercises in order to develop a more stable core and eliminate the risks of common injuries while accomplishing one’s health and fitness goals
