If you're looking for a go-to book on prayer, there are others out there. If you're looking for a thoughtful, deep exploration of what prayer may be, this is the book for you. This is not a fast or an easy read, but a very meaningful and sometimes uncomfortable conversation between author and reader. This is the best book on prayer I have ever read. This book was mentioned in a sermon by our pastor and I ordered it. I am so glad I did. I am making it a part of my daily devotions currently and it is eye opening and inspiring. If you ever have any worries or concerns about prayer or maybe think it is just a bit mysterious, this book clarifies a host of matters. Since prayer is so important to Christians, learning more about it is really a natural thing to want to do; this book is one great way to go about it. This was a very good book. It is very similar in arrangement to one of Foster's other books, Celebration of Discipline, with twenty-one chapters divided into three section. Each section focuses on a different "direction" of prayer (inward, outward, upward), and each chapter explains a different kind of prayer. It is the kind of book that has so much information, I feel as though I probably only understood and was able to apply 10% of the information, if that. It opened my eyes to kinds of prayer that I had never really thought about, much less used. It seems to me that Foster does a great job of explaining just about every kind of prayer without bias toward one denominational belief or way of doing things. It is something I hope to go back to many times when in need of guidance for my prayer life.miclums-43

Beauty. That’s what this book was. Pure beauty. It spoke to me. It made me cry. It opened my heart and touched places deep inside. I will be buying this book because, while I did read straight through for review purposes, this book is meant to be used for specific moments. I need a copy I can mark up and hold and turn to a certain liturgy to pray over and over again when I need it. Practically speaking I really liked that the liturgies are divided into categories. I liked that the otters cover such a wide range of topics, from the “big and deep” to the “ordinary and mundane”. There is a liturgy for going on a walk and one for waves of grief. Oh, and I can’t believe I almost forgot my favorite part – the Scripture references. These liturgies are steeped in Scripture (as they should be) and at the end of each one the authors list all the references. I love this because you can “check up” on the liturgy. Jakes writes in his book, When Women Pray: 10 Women of the Bible Who Changed the World Through Prayer. ~ What ~ This two-hundred-and-twenty-four-page hardbound focuses on women in the Bible who prayed and trusted God to change their circumstances. After an introduction, there are ten chapters, followed by a conclusion and notes. Using mainly the New International Version of the Bible, verses are sometimes written out and referenced throughout the chapters. In this study book, the author promotes the power of prayer and how it can change lives, especially for females. Focusing on iconic Biblical women, the chapters range from sixteen to twenty-four pages each. Covering Hannah, Mary, Sarah, the woman with the issue of blood, Naomi, the Samaritan and Shunammite women, Esther, Rhoda, and Anna, it rewrites the characters stories and explains how their actions can be applied to current day in regard to praying. ~ Why ~ Reading about the many women of the Word who relied on the Lord is refreshing and needed these days, especially for ladies who want to get closer to Him. I enjoyed the way the bishop correlated the past women to how we women can find hope, redemption, victories, and freedom in our lives. ~ Why Not ~ Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ may not see the value of a book on prayer. Others may not like that the book is written by a male and sometimes incorporates men in the Bible too when it is touted about women. ~ Wish ~ This book may not be in-depth for those who are committed to their prayer life praying for others and not only themselves. I wish it did not include the often personal input by the writer. ~ Want ~ If you are looking for a book on Biblical women who prayed and got results, this may be helpful, but note it was written by a man. Praying Women by Sheila Walsh is an excellent resource on “how to pray when you don’t know what to say.” The insight provided by Sheila Walsh is valuable and meaningful. It is also extremely relevant to women today. As one who is heavily involved in a prayer ministry, I really appreciated what Sheila Walsh shared in Praying Women. She shares not only her personal journeys and struggles, but also biblical passages to support the need for and power of prayer. The ten insights shared through each chapter are challenging as well as encouraging. The scripture share is rich. I firmly believe this book will be an encouragement for women who do not know how to pray, or an inspiration for women who want to go deeper in their prayer life. I truly enjoyed this book from Sheila Walsh, author, TV host and all-around encourager. "Praying Women" is a book that would be good for any age–she also writes in a way that is inclusive and inviting. If you've ever felt like it was too hard to pray or if you're not sure what to pray or even how to pray, this book is for you. Walsh explores many of the hindrances that hold women back from truly seeking God in a personal, relational way. Within the chapters of the book, Walsh shares her personal stories and those of friends who have faced seasons where God seemed quiet and their prayers were bouncing off the ceiling. Walsh doesn't mince words or lessen the impact of those struggles, but she does remind the reader that God is always there to listen, if we take the time to speak to Him. She offers questions at the end of each chapter for reflection/discussion and highlights important constructs from that particular portion. She also offers a way to pray through the Psalms that is helpful and easy to implement. "Praying Women" is a book that can be broken into smaller portions, as each chapter has a different theme. It would be awesome for a small group setting or for personal study. I think it could fit in a setting for all ages of ladies and open the door for further in depth conversations. I was an early reader, thanks to Baker Publishing but I loved it so much I purchased a copy to share with a friend.EmilyP

I've always wondered if my prayers were adequate, especially when I don't see the answers I seek. Jesus addressed using lots of words and wailing to make a public spectacle of yourself. Sometimes I've wondered if my prayers are too wordy or too scripted or too repetitive or too fill-in-the-blank. However, after reading Sheila Walsh's new book, I have hope that I can pray effectively, wherever and whenever and however I have occasion to do so. Sheila reassures the reader, "Whatever your challenge is, let me remind you that God is not looking for perfect words or perfect people. He just wants our hearts." What a reassurance!
