Reviews:
Francine has done a phenomenal job in translating the book of Hosea in the era of the Gold Rush. This story is about redemption of a young woman who had little choices in life. The first edition of this story I think was the best. Other editions had changes that I felt left a more vanilla view. I would recommend this book as a good read for anyone but especially for those who want to understand more deeply the scriptures. I went straight to the book of Hosea and read the whole thing with different eyes!hooverjax
Redeeming Love is one of those rare books that, while relating the main characters' stories, also tells our own. Angel is a young woman brutalized by many and dismissed by the rest as a lost cause, but when Michael Hosea enters the picture, Angel is given the opportunity to change the future that she believed to be set in stone. Though beginning to love an entirely different kind of life, the past confronts Angel through Michael's embittered brother-in-law and her own unnerving suspicion that she will be found unworthy in the end. In a desperate move to remember who she was before she was given the name 'Angel,' she returns to the confines of the city, only to stumble upon a freedom and sense of purpose she never believed she could find. Unaffected and honest, Francine Rivers weaves a story of unconditional love at its finest, pulling readers in and convincing them, page by page, that it cannot be set aside.Alexandria M
Purchased this book many years ago in a Christian book store near Hilton Head while vacationing there. The sales agent said: If you love Christian fiction books, I promise you this one is one you will always remember…… I purchased it and could not put it down or get away from its message! Does God really Love someone like Michael loved Angel even when she is unfaithful time and again..? I could go on but the book of Hosea in the Bible will never be the same to me again after reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers… Highly recommend this book-I purchase it for gifts now….1964ski

Reviews:
I read this as a library book a while back and loved it 's believable characters and evocative story telling. It's not the usual run of the mill love story. There are certain books that I know I will read again and again and this is one of them.dudleywa86
An excellent depiction of life in rural Kentucky during the Great Depression. Brave women ride horses to deliver books to those who need them most and have the least access. Lots of small town drama and deepening of friendships between the women. Romance and intrigue too. You will be grateful you are a woman in this century.LORI
This book keeps you engaged from the first line. Wonderful story about strong, courageous women who bonded together, despite differences and difficult times. I laughed and cried several times during the story. This is one book you won't want to end. Loved it!Felisha

Reviews:
Excellent service from booktopia and my purchase arrived very quickly. 'The Count of Monte Cristo' is an exciting and interesting book that deals with how people can change once circumstances are different and how injustice effects people. I loved this book and it kept me on the edge of my seat, the notes at the back of the book are excellent to help understand the history and background information. The only problem I had with this book was that the cover was a bit flimsy but other than that, it is a great edition of this wonderful book.Books + tea
Love this book! And I love even more that I could get it so inexpensively. There were some crayon marks on the interior pages, but nothing that covered the text. Still, overall a great value.jennifebolle-0
Dumas is my favorite author and this is one of his best works. This translation is excellent. It's long but if you read an abridged version you'll miss the full flavor of Dumas' book. The book is well-bound and the print is easy on the eyes. Highly recommend this book.usbar.sxoy3la
6. Middlesex: A Novel [Book]

Product Details:
A dazzling triumph from the bestselling author of the virgin suicides–the astonishing tale of a gene that passes down through three generations of a greek-american family and flowers in the body of a teenage girl. "i was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless detroit day of january 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near petoskey, michigan, in august of l974. . . my birth certificate lists my name as calliope helen stephanides. my most recent driver's license…records my first name simply as cal." so begins the breathtaking story of calliope stephanides and three generations of the greek-american stephanides family who travel from a tiny village overlooking mount olympus in asia minor to prohibition-era detroit, witnessing its glory days as the motor city, and the race riots of l967, before they move out to the tree-lined streets of suburban grosse pointe, michigan. to understand why calliope is not like other girls, she has to uncover a guilty family secret and the astonishing genetic history that turns callie into cal, one of the most audacious and wondrous narrators in contemporary fiction. lyrical and thrilling, jeffrey eugenides's middlesex is an exhilarating reinvention of the american epic.
Reviews:
Jefferey Eugenides should have won the Pulitzer Prize for The Virgin Suicides. Why not? Disgrace (James Coetzee) won it. A simple, elegant, exacting, impeccable perfect little book. You know how the blockbusters all come up right before Christmas? Big budgets, big explosions, yawning plots, and we see what Morgan Freeman or Brad Pitt has been up to the past year. The big Oscar grab? That's kind of how I felt about Middlesex. Unlike others who have claimed the writing was mismanaged or boring, I laugh at your feeble opinions. So does Jefferey, seen in his author's picture on the back cover donning a goatee and a turtleneck (a TURTLENECK), peeking coyly over his shoulder at the camera and looking very much like a former teenage girl indeed. The writing is impeccable, masterful, gorgeous, lush – INSPIRING. You could take literally any paragraph from that book and it will have been more funny and heart-wrenching than most authors dream of being. HOWEVER, on the whole, in much the trudging up the literary mountain style of, say, 100 Years of Solitude-style, yearning for greater things, a greater story, to be an epic, a classic, when really those kinds of things don't exist anymore and I'll take Catcher in the Rye any day of the week. I did ABSOLUTELY enjoy the book, but in my attachment to his first book, I felt, like I would for a good friend, Middlesex fell so very, very short of its potential. I can't even believe how boring it really was. Again, the many, many, MANY beautiful parts couldn't even begin to collate into a whole. The real story here is of Calliope and The Object — oh, what a wonderful delicious bizarre slice of a story. I wanted it, reached for it, and in the end came up with …. I don't know. I find stories about families boring in general. Eugenides is at his best when writing about adolescence. The Virgin Suicides, as snobby as some might be about a short book, is a fine, fine piece of writing. It remains in my top ten and you'll have to yank it out.rockonkristin
This book was chosen for our book group otherwise I would have missed it. I think Eugenides is a wonderful writer. This book had it all – history, migration, sexuality, coming of age. I loved the way the book was organized and the way it was narrated. For me it is one of the best reads of 2015.Jenny
I did not like this book – at all. The author jumped back and forth in time, without proper explanation – making the book quite confusing. It was also told in the most boring way possible. The story itself was really interesting, but the way it was told killed it. I love to read, but I do not plan to pick up any other books by this author.april.m
7. 'salem's Lot [Book]
Product Details:
Categories: vampires, horror fiction – books at the movies, edge of your seat reading (10000000412). contributors: stephen king – author. format: paperback title: 'salem's lot
Reviews:
I read this wonderfully frightening and ultimately hopeful book when it was first published. A life-long avid reader of everything and a bit precocious, I had read short news items about both the U.S., and at the time the U.S.S.R., we're developing strains of deadly germs to be released during battle. King's book is in the top 10 of the tens of thousands of books I have read in the past 55 years. It vividly brought home an horrific view of the total devastation and terror that germ and nuclear war can unleash. Since that time, I have worked against their use by supporting, working for, and always voting for candidates totally opposed to germ and nuclear warfare.sharostake0
Having read a lot of Stephen King books previously, this has been one of my favourite and loved books of his. Normally, King loses control of his stories – often turning weird or extravagant. I find that he cannot finish the stories cause they seem like a forever occuring horror. But from the start to finish, Salem's Lot kept reasonable and almost realistic. It held my attention and I was anticipating when I could finish my other work so I could sit and read. It was perfect.Dhruvo
Yes, it was written in the 1970's, and some of the dialogue feels funny now, but re-reading King's second novel reminds me yet again, how good his early work is. And this illustrated edition is nicely printed with good paper and interesting photo montages that are suggestive rather than literal. Another bonus is the new forward by the author, explaining his inspiration for the story and his childhood love of Bram Stokers Dracula. There are also two short stories that came before the novel, and some deleted sections of the book printed here for the first time. If you love early Stephen King, this is quite the bargain, and worthy of space on your bookshelf.man.child

Reviews:
You was interesting and highly engrossing from the very beginning. I enjoyed that the story is from 2nd narration. The story is a little bit creepy, but not too creepy. It does feature lots of stalking, violence, and murder, just so people are aware before starting the book.Peppermint1991
This was definitely very different than what I have ever read before. Creepy. Odd. Messes up with your mind but addicting. This book is not for everyone. *Note: I read this way before the TV series came out. Still haven't watched it yet.I am so conflicted in whether I like or hate Joe Goldberg. He is a creepy, smart, psychotic stalker. I should dislike him for that but sometimes I don't. He is a hopeless romantic that needs help. But I don't think any help will actually help him. He knows what he is doing therefore none of his actions are acceptable. Joe meets Guinevere Beck at the bookstore he works at and is instantly obsessed. He will do anything for her, and he does. Every other character in this book isn't any better than him in a way. Yes they don't stalk and hurt people but their actions and personality aren't the greatest either. This book is a crazy read. It will make you so conflicted because you will hate yourself for liking this guy.tiffany.l
Received a copy of this novel as an advanced reader edition in my store a month or two before the release date. While I lay hands on nearly every new release of the year, this one immediately caught my attention and I took it home to read. I found the use of the 2nd person pov a refreshing perspective and was instantly caught up in a love affair with the narrator – his keen wit, unconventional viewpoints and social awkwardness were very endearing. A little into the novel, I started thinking "This guy might be a little creepy." A little further, I started thinking, "Yeah…this guy is kinda creepy.". A little further, and I realize, "Yes. Yes, this guy is definitely a creeper," but yet I'm still somewhat enthralled. His actions and conclusions seem so normal and such a matter-of-course to him, it's very easy to sympathize and see him as the victim rather than the victimizer. I sometimes hesitate to recommend this book to customers as it's so incredibly creepy, but if you are a mature reader with a love for psychological thrillers, this book is an absolute must read!Lisa, GM

Reviews:
This book highlighted some disturbingly familiar issues in our society which takes place in an unfamiliar, wild and unforgiving environment. It takes the reader on a journey of emotional highs and lows. It has all the elements which touch our heart; love, hope, tragedy and disappointment. It shows the characters as complex multi dimensional beings, which we come to understand as their stories unfold.Maggie
As a cradle Catholic, I found this book difficult. I struggled with the perspective of being written by Jesus' wife Ana. It would have been more in keeping with my upbringing if the perspective had been that of Mary Magdalen. I usually pass my books along, I will not do that with this book. Our book club has a diverse membership, our Jewish members are not familiar with the New Testament, and they struggled with keeping the characters straight. Our Indian members had similar struggles, but they had some knowledge of the complete Bible. We are a well educated group of women, doctors, engineers, teachers, lawyers, etc. Definitely not a book I will recommend.RosieG
Audible version review: The story was decent and the narration was great. However, when she described anything, everything, and all things, the book became incredibly, astonishingly, and boringly repetitive . I don't need 3 adjectives to describe the color blue (cerulean, turquoise and crystal) , the snow sitting on the mountain (bright white with a million sparkling diamonds in the shining sun) AND the sound of the boat as it laps, slaps, and caresses the waves. It got to the point that I would entertain myself by counting the number of adjectives the author gave each time she describe what something looked like. If you think this review is boring, then you are getting the picture.sheri.g

Reviews:
The books came in near-perfect condition. They were packaged with care so they weren't just banging around in the shipping box. The only negative thing I have to say is one of the books has a black scuff mark on it from when it was packaged in the Twilight box itself but this wasn't Walmart's fault.Taylor

I couldn't put it down! I read this book in a weekend, and had to basically pry myself away from it! Incredible storyline with captivating characters, this was a novel that I honestly didn't expect to be this good! There's a bit of romance, suspense and a whole lot of emotion – all rolled in to one very well-written novel! Read. This. Book!wendy.s
I listened to THE FOUR WINDS BY KRISTIN HANNAH on audible, her latest novel. It is a harrowing story of the strength of women during the Great Depression and how negative words spoken to us as a child can color how we see ourselves as adults. A lot of this book is about long horrible struggles of the main characters, but it is well written with its descriptive writing that paints a clear picture. Engrossing narration of you choose the audible versionkathryn.c

Reviews:
I've started reading this book, and I have to say it's utterly gripping. The prologue sets the scene of a bloody climax of an historic event, that weaves its way seamlessly into the protagonists lifetime. Its engaging and rich in description and world building but without being too 'heavy' going. Making this an exciting rich and masterfully written fantasy epic. I would thoroughly reccomend it to anyone seeking to be transported a legendary place and time, filled with magic, adventure and combat.merchantofvenice-3519
The Eye of the World novel, by Robert Jordan, creates a rich and colourfully imagined universe. Readers will be quickly charmed by and emersed in the well written local cultures and lore. Also, it is effortless to relate with the characters who are realistic and engaging. Jordan's plot focuses on three unlikely heroes: Rand, a simple sheepherder, Perrin, a thoughtful blacksmith and Mat, a likeable rogue. All three have their lives turned upside down when their sleepy home town of the Two Rivers is suprised by a horde of bloodthirsty Trollics (evil man-beasts). The three boys are told by a mysterious traveller Moirane that they are 'taver'en' (those who are able to manipulate unwittingly the fabric that governs the universe). These three must leave their home as they are sought by The Dark One (the novel's protagonist) and travel to the Eye of the World, which is a source of immense magical power. Their task is to stop The Dark One who is threating to use it to remake the world in his own image. Will the three small town farmboys be able to take on the immense power of The Dark One? What will they discover about their destiny in the process? The fantasy elements of the novel are top notch, with the main magical system being 'The One Power'. The One Power exists in a select few individuals who are able to tap into this personal source and manipulate the five elements(earth, fire, wind, water and spirit), to do everything from light a fire to heal a person who is mortally wounded. The twist to this inner power is that only women can touch it safely (Saidar) and men who touch the source (Saidin) will eventually go mad and die, killing those they love. This Ying Yang tension is key to the themes of the novel. This approach to magic is refreshing and leads to many moral conflicts within the novel itself. The cultures and lands in the Wheel of Time series are not only rich and imaginative, but have had all aspects considered, even down to marriage rights and political intrigue! Though this is a fantasy novel at heart, all of the races are original. You won't see your predictable Orcs and Elves in this text! This makes the world of this fantasy novel very realistic, yet also inventive. The main characters are not perfect and have real flaws that readers can relate to (for example, Mat having a penchant for gambling and girls!!!) The storyline is satisfying, which at its heart is a traditional Greek plot of good versus evil. Overall, Jordan's orignal style of prose, delightful descriptions and indepth, realistic cultures add a depth to the story which makes this novel refreshing and will keep you turning pages to the conclusion. Cassie FosterDavid
I absolutely loved this book. While it's hard to come up with a truly original story anymore, Robert Jordan has created an incredible world that feels both familiar and strange at the same time. His characters truly breathe and the classic good vs. evil plot line is comforting with enough new spins to keep it fresh. I love the strong female characters; it's rare in high fantasy to exalt the woman's power and I applaud the author for doing so. Rich and inviting, I can't wait to explore the next installments of this series.SARAH

Reviews:
Compelling stories, vividly told, brings a little known world to life . vastly influential . "not of our time" behavior of the characters . lust, greed, jealously, ambition, pride, cruelty, revenge, honor, betrayal, violence, heroism, sacrifice, loyalty, and on and on . . The compilation is not a novel . . you are not going to sit down one evening and polish this volume off like a modern thriller . it will take months . For reading, I recommend a good chair, a fire in the fireplace, a bottle of brandy, a blanket across the knees, and of course your sword, shield and helmet, all your fighting gear, an arm's reach away . . beware the knock on the door . it may be the call to battle . the final call . .wolf28man

Reviews:
These were being offered at a very attractive price and I finally decided to buy. I've seen odd snippets of the films and thought to try the books; very pleased I did. Films can never keep more than three narrative threads going unlike a book and with these I have lost count of the number of threads running through the tale. They can be read straight through as you would normally read a book or you can use chapter headings and read through an individual thread and see what one person in the tale is doing. Don't expect happy endings though George Martin tells it as you would expect those times to be where the unlikable survive and the likable end up dead or maimed. And when you have read through, start again because this is a tale so tightly written with events and characters intertwining it will take several reads to fully get to grips with it. And then prepare yourself for the next book in what promises to be a never ending saga.
As an avid game of thrones fan, naturally I felt like getting the ASOIAF books for cheap. Postage was quick and the item arrived in immaculate condition, with a free poster map of Westeros and a part of Essos. The box that contains the book set has kinda teared slightly on the edges however. The box has been made to be maybe a bit too tight so take care when taking out books and putting them back in. Overall excellent service from The Works. Would recommend the box set especially at this price! Currently on book 2 and I thought A Game of Thrones was a compelling read, so the actual content is fantastic as well. If you're a GOT fan, make sure you have this on your bookshelf.ansbha-5243
Missed the series when shown on TV, so bought the books to accompany the film series, also recently purchased. Have only just started to read the first novel, but already I am captivated by the detail and the compelling and thrilling storyline. Looking forward to reading through and watching each of the episodes in turn.wyndhams52
