It is always interesting to me to know the "why"s behind the scene and the events. Paolantonio connects several of the key characteristics of football with the specific historical and cultural setting behind them. You can clearly understand then why football is so uniquely "American".tkyates18

2. America's Game: The Epic Story Of How Pro Football Captured A Nation [Book]

Product Details:
It’s difficult to imagine today—when the super bowl has virtually become a national holiday and the national football league is the country’s dominant sports entity—but pro football was once a ramshackle afterthought on the margins of the american sports landscape. in the span of a single generation in postwar america, the game charted an extraordinary rise in popularity, becoming a smartly managed, keenly marketed sports entertainment colossus whose action is ideally suited to television and whose sensibilities perfectly fit the modern age. america’s game traces pro football’s grand transformation, from the world war ii years, when the nfl was fighting for its very existence, to the turbulent 1980s and 1990s, when labor disputes and off-field scandals shook the game to its core, and up to the sport’s present-day preeminence. a thoroughly entertaining account of the entire universe of professional football, from locker room to boardroom, from playing field to press box, this is an essential book for any fan of america’s favorite sport.
Reviews:
This is a tour de force of sports writing. The author has written a tremendous piece of work detailing the history of the NFL up until the modern day. The book is really indepth but readable. I am saddened that I have finished the book, it was that well-written and interesting to me. Stories of the influential figures of the NFL abound throughout the book and really there seems to be no stone unturned by the writer. Highly recommended.

I liked the book a lot. Manning is a exceptional example for all of us. I would have liked the book a lot more if we did not have the profanity from Brady. I could never recommend this book to anyone offended by profanity much less to a youngster who could use a strong role model like Manning.Douglas

12. Football For A Buck: The Crazy Rise And Crazier Demise Of The Usfl [Book]

Product Details:
From a multiple new york times bestselling author, the rollicking, outrageous, you-can't-make-this-up story of the usfl the united states football league–known fondly to millions of sports fans as the usfl–was the last football league to not merely challenge the nfl, but cause its owners and executives to collectively shudder. it spanned three seasons, 1983-85. it secured multiple television deals. it drew millions of fans and launched the careers of legends. but then it died beneath the weight of a particularly egotistical and bombastic owner–a new york businessman named donald j. trump. the league featured as many as 18 teams, and included such superstars as steve young, jim kelly, herschel walker, reggie white, doug flutie and mike rozier. in football for a buck, the dogged reporter and biographer jeff pearlman draws on more than four hundred interviews to unearth all the salty, untold stories of one of the craziest sports entities to have ever captivated america. from 1980s drug excess to airplane brawls and player-coach punch outs, to backroom business deals, to some of the most enthralling and revolutionary football ever seen, pearlman transports readers back in time to this crazy, boozy, audacious, unforgettable era of the game. he shows how fortunes were made and lost on the backs of professional athletes and also how, thirty years ago, trump was a scoundrel and a spoiler. for fans of terry pluto's loose balls or jim bouton's ball four and of course pearlman's own stranger-than-fiction narratives, football for a buck is sports as high entertainment–and a cautionary tale of the dangers of ego and excess.

16. The Perfect Pass: American Genius And The Reinvention Of Football [Book]

Product Details:
An “excellent sports history” (publishers weekly) in the tradition of michael lewis’s moneyball, award-winning historian s.c. gwynne tells the incredible story of how two unknown coaches revolutionized american football at every level, from high school to the nfl.hal mumme spent fourteen mostly losing seasons coaching football before inventing a potent passing offense that would soon shock players, delight fans, and terrify opposing coaches. it all began at a tiny, overlooked college called iowa wesleyan, where mumme was head coach and mike leach, a lawyer who had never played college football, was hired as his offensive line coach. in the cornfields of iowa these two mad inventors, drawn together by a shared disregard for conventionalism and a love for jimmy buffett, began to engineer the purest, most extreme passing game in the 145-year history of football. implementing their “air raid” offense, their teams—at iowa wesleyan and later at valdosta state and the university of kentucky—played blazingly fast—faster than any team ever had before, and they routinely beat teams with far more talented athletes. and mumme and leach did it all without even a playbook. “a superb treat for all gridiron fans” (kirkus reviews, starred review), the perfect pass s.c. gwynne explores mumme’s leading role in changing football from a run-dominated sport to a pass-dominated one, the game that tens of millions of americans now watch every fall weekend. whether you’re a casual or ravenous football fan, this is “a rousing tale of innovation” (booklist), and “gwynne’s book ably relates the story of that innovation and the successes of the man who devised it” (new york journal of books).

19. Leifer. The Golden Age Of American Football [Book]

Product Details:
In 1958, journalist neil leifer took the picture that remains one of his most famous to this day. the day he got the shot–alan ameche's game-winning "sudden death" touchdown–was leifer's 16th birthday. this game, called "the greatest ever played," signaled football's emergence as america's new national pastime; formerly half-empty stadiums welcomed sold-out crowds seemingly overnight, while football surpassed baseball in national television ratings. starting then, on any given sunday leifer was most likely shooting a football game somewhere in america… while best known for his iconic photograph of muhammad ali towering over a fallen sonny liston, it is his football pictures leifer considers his best. this collection represents the best of his best, culled from over 10,000 rolls of film on the sport. with an introduction assembled from the best football columns of the era by famed sports columnist jim murray, and incisive captions detailing the legendary players, coaches, and games, this volume carries the guts and glory of the game into the end zone.
