1. S.p.q.r.: A History Of Ancient Rome [Book]
Product Details:
Ancient rome was an imposing city even by modern standards, a sprawling imperial metropolis of more than a million inhabitants, a "mixture of luxury and filth, liberty and exploitation, civic pride and murderous civil war" that served as the seat of power for an empire that spanned from spain to syria. yet how did all this emerge from what was once an insignificant village in central italy? classicist mary beard narrates the unprecedented rise of a civilization that even two thousand years later still shapes many of our most fundamental assumptions about power, citizenship, responsibility, political violence, empire, luxury, and beauty. opening the book in 63 bce with the famous clash between the populist aristocrat catiline and cicero, the renowned politician and orator, beard animates this "terrorist conspiracy," which was aimed at the very heart of the republic, demonstrating how this singular event would presage the struggle between democracy and autocracy that would come to define much of rome's subsequent history. illustrating how a classical democracy yielded to a self-confident and self-critical empire, s.p.q.r. reintroduces us to famous and familiar characters — hannibal, julius caesar, cleopatra, augustus, and nero, among others — while expanding the historical aperture to include those overlooked in traditional histories: the women, the slaves and ex-slaves, conspirators, and those on the losing side of rome's glorious conquests.
Reviews:
Every book I have read about the Roman Empire has been written by British authors, (except for the late Robert Hughes, who was Australian) And they are always critical of the Romans. You would think the Romans were the only people to invade other countries. Could British authors write about their own country, about the colonisation of most of the African continent, India, most of the Middle East?cr
2. The History Of The Ancient World: From The Earliest Accounts To The Fall Of Rome [Book]
Product Details:
A lively and engaging narrative history showing the common threads in the cultures that gave birth to our own.this is the first volume in a bold series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from europe to the middle east to the far coast of china, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. susan wise bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. dozens of maps provide a clear geography of great events, while timelines give the reader an ongoing sense of the passage of years and cultural interconnection. this old-fashioned narrative history employs the methods of “history from beneath”—literature, epic traditions, private letters and accounts—to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.
Reviews:

Reviews:
We love Story of the World! I always hated history in school even though I got straight A's I knew that I didn't have a coherent picture of the past Teaching history to my kids used to scare me until I found this curriculum First I borrowed and read through the Ancient Times book I couldn't put it down! I kept asking my husband things like "Have you ever heard of the Fertile Crescent?" "Did you know about the pictures carved into the ground in South America?" I had never learned about these things! Next I bought the book and activity book I am amazed at how much is packed into the activity book! I spent some time going through it picked out the activities I wanted to do made a list and went to town to buy simple supplies and make copies of the coloring pages The kids are so curious about the macaroni noodles grass seed clay and dowels that I got for history Now I will have practically no more prep time and the projects are going to be so fun to do!Final test: How do the kids like it? After the section about archaeology my 6 year old begged "Would you read that again?" He wanted to hear the text again before they went out on their own 'archaeological dig!' Today when I pulled out the book my 5 and 6 year olds said "Horray! History!" My 2 year old even participates in coloring and 'helping' with the projects and the reading sections aren't long I am able to read them before she gets too bored I'm so happy to have this resource to begin teaching my kids (and myself) all about history! One more note: although this is not a Christian curriculum it does respect the Christian perspective There is no talk of evolution or the evolutionary time-line In the book lists of the activity book there are notes about the books that have evolutionary content or nudity or might have content that is just too frightening for some children I really appreciate this!
Story of the World: History for the Classical Child, Vol. 1: Ancient Times is absolutely fantastic. Written in narrative, my 8 year old could easily read this and understand, yet it is fascinating for adults to read as well. I read it to my 8-10 year olds. They enjoyed listening and would ask for me to read each day. I would ask them to share what they remembered from the day before, before reading. The activity teaching book (purchased separately) has wonderful projects and ideas. There is also a test booklet that goes with this.jwf_9671
I think this book is a good overview of history and is a great supplemental reader. I do not recommend it as a stand-alone curriculum. Whether or not you like it depends on how your child learns. It is written like a chapter-book for reading, not like a text-book. It gives factual information and has stories to go along with the facts to put them into a memorable context. It contains a few black and white pics, similar to a novel that might have pics. There is no end-of-chapter terms or discussions or questions as in text-books.kellbell203

The Story of the World is a wonderful history curriculum and I love the audio book option. I actually use it in conjunction with Layers of Learning. It gives me a break and the kids can listen to it while they color or do other arts and crafts. We also listen to it in the car on longer drives. They really enjoy it.Elizabeth
I never enjoyed learning history as a child, especially ancient history. This audio collection has changed my perspective. My kids beg to listen to it every time we are in the car. Great for all ages. It’s easy to listen to and information is easy to retain. Some stories have added embellishments, but they don’t detract much from the true events being taught.Heather
7. Creators, Conquerors, And Citizens: A History Of Ancient Greece [Book]
Product Details:
So the fifth-century historian herodotus has some athenians declare, in explanation of why they would never betray their fellow greeks to the enemy, the "barbarian" persians. and he might have added further common features, such as clothing, foodways, and political institutions. but if the greeks knew that they were kin, why did many of them side with the persians against fellow greeks, and why, more generally, is ancient greek history so often the history of internecine wars and other forms of competition with one another? this is the question acclaimed historian robin waterfield sets out to explore in this magisterial history of ancient greece. with more information, more engagingly presented, than any similar work, this is the best single-volume account of ancient greece in more than a generation. waterfield gives a comprehensive narrative of seven hundred years of history, from the emergence of the greeks around 750 bce to the roman conquest of the last of the greco-macedonian kingdoms in 30 bce. equal weight is given to all phases of greek history — the archaic, classical, and hellenistic periods. without compromising the readability of the book, waterfield incorporates the most recent scholarship by classical historians and archaeologists and asks his readers to think critically about greek history. a brilliant, up-to-date account of ancient greece, suitable for history buffs and university students alike, creators, conquerors, and citizens presents a compelling and comprehensive story of this remarkable civilization's disunity, underlying cultural solidarity, and eventual political unification.

Reviews:
Each page is an excellent summary of that time point in history. Highly engaging.R
This is a very practical reference book, not too light nor too heavy on detail. It is especially useful for high school and college students who might need a quick overview of world history. This book is richly illustrated, well written, and carefully curated. The Modern World section does not get into contemporary material since it was published in 2010, but that is not a huge shortcoming. This book can easily double as a coffee table book because there is something of interest on whatever section you happen to open this little gem. There is a lot of information online, but nothing compares to the real thing: A good book.baha-jose

9. A History Of Egypt: From Earliest Times To The Present [Book]
Product Details:
In a history of egypt, jason thompson has written the first one-volume work to encompass all 5,000 years of egyptian history, highlighting the surprisingly strong connections between the ancient land of the pharaohs and the modern-day arab nation. no country's past can match egypt's in antiquity, richness, and variety. however, it is rarely presented as a comprehensive panorama because scholars tend to divide it into distinct eras—prehistoric, pharaonic, greco-roman, coptic, medieval islamic, ottoman, and modern—that are not often studied in relation to one another. in this daringly ambitious project, drawing on the most current scholarship as well as his own research, thompson makes the case that few if any other countries have as many threads of continuity running through their entire historical experience. with its unprecedented scope and lively and readable style, a history of egypt offers students, travelers, and general readers alike an engaging narrative of the extraordinarily long course of human history by the nile.

10. The Early History Of Rome: Books I-V Of The History Of Rome From Its Foundation [Book]
Product Details:
With stylistic brilliance and historical imagination, the first five books of livy's monumental history of rome record events from the foundation of rome through the history of the seven kings, the establishment of the republic and its internal struggles, up to rome's recovery after the fierce gallic invasion of the fourth century b.c. livy vividly depicts the great characters, legends, and tales, including the story of romulus and remus. reprinting robert ogilvie's lucid 1971 introduction, this highly regarded edition now boasts a new preface, examining the text in light of recent livy scholarship, informative maps, bibliography, and an index.for more than seventy years, penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the english-speaking world. with more than 1,700 titles, penguin classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
Reviews:
I purchased Penguin's 2002 revised edition of Livy's EARLY HISTORY OF ROME(the first five of the 35 surviving books; please see Livy's other titles in the Penguin Classics Series)which includes the excellent 1971 Introduction by Robert Ogilvie as well a recent tidying up job by Stephen Oakley. There are maps, appendices, bibliography and an index. The translation by Aubrey Selincourt is over forty years old but for my money is still easily enough digestetable for my 21st century short attention span. Also, the cover is an astute choice: showing a detail of David's THE SABINE WOMEN. Penguin does has such very good taste. As mentioned in another review of a Penguin Classic, even if you don't READ them, their books will never let you down just sitting there looking quite clever on the shelf and or on top of a pile of less aesthetically pleasing paperbacks. If you are reading up on ancient Rome for some reason or another, whether for school, boredom, researching the hows and whys to start a global empire, this is a fine start. Livy's first five books are perhaps not the most historical but they are without doubt a cracking read and Penguin has presented them in both an accessible and intelligent manner.curiosansuch

I have a very sensitive 1st grader who read this with me. It was by far his favorite subject, and the writing style certainly is engaging, however, there were some parts that made him cry. Yes, it's history and reality and I don't want to shield him from that, but, be aware that there is a lot of death in this book. Your child may not be ready for all the gruesome tales of cyclops, or Julius Ceasar's murder, etc. If your child is sensitive, then you may want to wait a year or two to do this series or plan to preview what parts you might want to skip/soften.User
Lots of people had written raves about this book. It is ok, but because it covers history from different parts of the world it seems to jump all over the place. It does each time period from different parts of the world and then goes around again for the next time period. I think younger kids would not be understanding it well unless you made a timeline to go with it. I felt that if you didn't have some sort of history understanding you wouldn't be able to piece it together. For this reason I think kids need to be older to get the most out of it. Many of the stories are fun and well written though.Pieta McLean
