Reviews:
I purchased this book after hearing about the existence of the Case Study houses. This is a terrific book detailing the history of the Case Study houses and how these architects and their designs set the tone and style of modern architecture up until today with the concept and materials to blend interior and exterior spaces. I also liked the book because, among other features, it explains how new materials were made available for construction after the war, and how this fact influenced a new era of residential architecture. The book surprised me by including all of the Case Study houses including photos and diagrams.2012joane

13. American Homes: The Landmark Illustrated Encyclopedia Of Domestic Architecture [Book]

Product Details:
American homes is the classic work of american house architecture. from the dutch colonial, to the new england salt box, to the 1950s prefab, this unrivaled reference and useful guide to 103 building styles pays homage to our country's housing heritage. hundreds of sequenced drawings illustrate the evolution of our most beloved housing styles, like the colonial english cottage, which grows before our eyes from a simple square of posts and beams to a fully constructed home with hand-split cedar clapboards and an intricately thatched roof. there's also the italianate, whose roof displays its intricate carved brackets and is topped with a cupola that serves to filter light to the interior of the home. annotated floor plans offer insight into the structure of these homes, and with it, a good measure of inspiration. no wrought-iron railing, white stucco wall, or gingerbread gable goes neglected. every idiosyncratic detail and decoration of each of these uniquely american designs is delicately drawn.american homes is the perfect reference for enthusiasts of architecture, history, and american studies. it is also the ideal inspiration for anyone who lives in or dreams of living in a classic american home.
Reviews:
The book is well provided for with a thick hardcover and a set of nice thick pages. The book itself is approx 220mm wide by 285mm tall with 333 pages so measures up as quite a weighty tome, definitely a book to have on your lap. The print is a clearly readable black text on a off white page with illustrations through out. Whilst the illustrations are not drawn to a noted scale they are all drawn in proportion with most accompanied by a either a couple or family of three in the same proportional size. Some of the illustrations are sized and it was noticeable that in general the size of properties are based on three standard sizes. The book has seven (7) distinct “chapters” with a clear index at the beginning. The bulk of the books content is based across two chapters describing early home styles from 300AD to 1800AD and homes built by Settlers from 1580AD through to the year 2000AD (the book publishing year). I found it extremely easy to read with the style of prose providing a very informative and instructional method. I bought the book to help me with my model structure building for my model railroad especially as I live in the U.K. and thus too far away to view the styles in person. The book clearly delivers on that front and has also helped me gain a lot more knowledge about individual building styles.Dean H.

14. Case Study Houses. Ediz. Francese, Inglese E Tedesca [Book]

Product Details:
The case study house program (1945-66) was an exceptional, innovative event in the history of american architecture and remains to this day unique. the program, which concentrated on the los angeles area and oversaw the design of 36 prototype homes, sought to make available plans for modern residences that could be easily and cheaply constructed during the postwar building boom.the program's chief motivating force was arts & architecture editor john entenza, a champion of modernism who had all the right connections to attract some of architecture's greatest talents, such as richard neutra, charles and ray eames, and eero saarinen. highly experimental, the program generated houses that were designed to redefine the modern home, and thus had a pronounced influence on architecture–american and international–both during the program's existence and even to this day.taschen brings you a monumental retrospective of the entire program with comprehensive documentation, brilliant photographs from the period and, for the houses still in existence, contemporary photos, as well as extensive floor plans and sketches.
Reviews:
I've wanted to buy this book for a long time. However, the bulky book is hard to read unless it's on a table. Also the print is so small it's very difficult to read. For me, it required using a magnifying glass. However the content and the pictures are fascinating.bobvieth
