Even with the somewhat odd bits about communicating with ET's this book is far better than Ray Davies' pseudo-Orwellian "X-RAY" if you want to really get into the Kinks' experience. Dave Davies' account is ten times more readable, actually contains family pictures that Ray did not include in his unauthorized autobiography, and is a slightly goofy, far-out, and totally friendly read. Dave's account is fun and transparent in all of the opposite ways that Ray's was buried, then masked and cloaked, then disguised as fiction. I could barely finish "X-Ray" because it was so totally pompous and contrived. Ray is the better songwriter of the two, I think, but his book is unreadable. Too many cheap smoke-and-mirror tactics that give little while they retract from the book. I know that Ray probably put them there to make the thinking reader laugh at their obviousness, but… really, Ray. No wonder you end up dying alone in an industrial wasteland at the end of your book. Dave Davies' totally open, zany personal style comes through in the book. His telling of some of the more absurdist situations is very… very , very funny. It is obvious, of course, that the stories have probably improved with much telling over the years, but that is a known danger with rock biographies. It is not a tale told in flowers, though, and taxing and troubling times, but the overall experience of the book almost leads me to believe that he just might be someone that the ET's would choose to talk to. I know I would. It's no wonder that everyone wanted to sleep with him… and it sounds like it really was EVERYONE from the way the book rolls it out. They title "Kink" is apt and funny in that Totally English Monte Python sort of way. (And, yes… there are men behaving badly while dressed in skirts…!) The biography is one of the more satisfying biographies that I have read because it presents a flawed person who has made a good deal out of the flaws and has turned them into virtues in the process. It does not read as a cautionary tale, a kiss-and-tell-all, or a simple biography that happened to be written by the person it all happened to. If you want to read a 1984-style paranoid biopic of the Kinks filled with the soul-saving abilities of the Ray, then buy Ray's book. If you want a fun read that balances atrocious behavior with absurdly beautiful moments and alien mind games, buy Dave's.brandy.p
Having read his brothers book xRay some years ago and always being a Kinks fan. I thought I'd like to read Dave's story. He discusses right from his early family life to creating that famous riff. Alll the hits etc. The rock n roll lifestyle and excesses. I personally enjoyed his thoughts on other stars he paid tribute to and the last time he met Keith Moon. This is by far the most helpful book I’ve read following escaping a domestic violence marriage with my two young children. It has helped me understand what happened to me, why he behaved that way and was extremely validating. I now know how he thinks and it’s made me more empowered to deal with him given that we are still going through court following the separation. It also looks at his abuse around the children which was also a factor innleaving. I feel like I no longer need to find time to go get trauma counselling. He’s given me such an in-depth insight to my situation that it’s been an incredibly healing self help resource. I wished I’d had it while still in the relationship. Highly recommended.

The Very Secret Society Of Irregular Witches is the second stand-alone novel by British author, Sangu Mandanna. At the latest meeting of the group that Mika Moon likes to call The Very Secret Society of Witches, the rules of remaining apart (Alone is how we survive) and the reasoning behind them (Too much magic left unchecked in one place would draw attention, which could be dangerous) are reiterated, and Mika is again criticised by the oldest, most powerful and persuasive witch, Primrose Everly, for her witchy social media videos. Mika is undeterred: no one could ever believe from her videos that she's really a witch! The email she receives, not much later, has her thinking twice about that: "WITCH WANTED. Live in tutor wanted for three young witches. Must have nerves of steel. Previous teaching experience not necessary. Witchiness essential." Surely a hoax? Sensitive readers should be aware that there is a bit of sex and some characters do use expletives, but Mandanna also gives them wise words and insightful observations: "Niceness is all about what we do when other people are looking. Kindness, on the other hand, runs deep. Kindness is what happens when no one's looking" and "when someone leaves, all you can do is leave a window open for them so that one day, if they choose, they can come back." I wasn't sure I wanted to read this one, but it was a selection for one of my book clubs. It has been a long time since I felt compelled to finish a book in a day. The sorry just kept sucking me in every time I thought I could put it down. The primary twist in the book I could see coming fairly early in the book but it really didn't detract from the story and there were some less predictable twists. I have yet to read hotter fiction that this series, and if you are in the market for real BDSM, that is written as close to the real life history as possible, then you need to purchase this series. I’m in two minds with this book. On one hand, I really liked the story itself – the daughter of a serial killer dealing with the aftermath of being the one who found the evidence to arrest him. To have this affect your whole life, and then when you’ve found happiness, girls in the periphery of your life start disappearing. On the other hand, the female main character is a confused mess who relies on drugs she prescribes herself to get through the day. She takes it upon herself to investigate because only she can do it, but puts herself in danger multiple times. For me this overused trope takes away from how good the story is. I thought it was well written and I was pulled into the story – I had to know what was going on and if I picked the villain (I did not).Nicola
