1. Behave: The Biology Of Humans At Our Best And Worst [Book]

Product Details:
The new york times bestseller“it’s no exaggeration to say that behave is one of the best nonfiction books i’ve ever read.” —david p. barash, the wall street journal"it has my vote for science book of the year.” —parul sehgal, the new york times"hands-down one of the best books i’ve read in years. sapolsky's storytelling concept is delightful but it also has a powerful intrinsic logic: he starts by looking at the factors that bear on a person's reaction in the precise moment a behavior occurs, and then hops back in time from there, in stages, ultimately ending up at the deep history of our species and its evolutionary legacy. and so the first category of explanation is the neurobiological one. a behavior occurs–whether an example of humans at our best, worst, or somewhere in between. what went on in a person's brain a second before the behavior happened? then sapolsky pulls out to a slightly larger field of vision, a little earlier in time: what sight, sound, or smell caused the nervous system to produce that behavior? and then, what hormones acted hours to days earlier to change how responsive that individual is to the stimuli that triggered the nervous system? finally, he expands the view to encompass factors larger than one individual. how did culture shape that individual's group, what ecological factors millennia old formed that culture? and on and on, back to evolutionary factors millions of years old. sapolsky builds on this understanding to wrestle with some of our deepest and thorniest questions relating to tribalism and xenophobia, hierarchy and competition, morality and free will, and war and peace. wise, humane, often very funny, behave is a towering achievement, powerfully humanizing, and downright heroic in its own right.

This is a wonderful exploration of the biological basis for behavior. I always believed in really free will, but this book gave me pause regarding the fundamental underpinnings of molecular biology as a primary source of behavioral expression. Certainly worth the reading for a new perspective!goldenattics
For an older electronic book, it's rather expensive. Usually, I prefer paper copies, but for 1200+ page book, it's easier on a computer, phone, or tablet. This is a book that will require a fair bit of annotation is you are not an expert in the field, so having a separate text document where you can keep your annotations will be a plus.gynnis
This book is more than psychology, more than sociology, and there is much to learn about why we are what and who we are, and how we got that way. The author gives us an idea that many of our attitudes and feelings began in our DNA in the stone age. Very interesting and hard to put down.PhoenixIndy

3. The Riot And The Dance: Foundational Biology [Book]
Product Details:
If you thought biology was the province of secular scientists, think again: the riot and the dance is biology like you've never seen it before. with over 130 original illustrations and several hundred figures total, this book is first and foremost an approachable and readable explanation of the basics of biology. but dr. wilson doesn't dumb down the concepts, either. using analogies, anecdotes, and simple, personable language, dr. wilson teaches students the bottom-line themes and key details of biology. the riot and the dance is not a pile of disconnected facts: it is an integrated foundation for understanding biological life, and it will stir up curiosity about all life from fungus firearms to familiar vertebrates — that, along with a greater desire to praise the creator of it all.
Reviews:
I used another popular biology curriculum for my older son but switched to this for my second son. The language is alive and engaging. The format and drawings are neat and pleasing, mostly black and white pencil drawings – not visually “busy” like other texts. My son LOVES IT. Best curriculum purchase of the year, hands down.Jennifer
Makes me worship God!Douglas and Andr
Outstanding book! High-level information, but really easy to understand. This does not "dumb down" the material…and it's all presented through the lens of a Christian worldview. Great product! And Wilson's accompanying nature documentaries are fantastic as well!Danielle

8. Biology 2 [Book]
Product Details:
Includes topics that could not be crammed into our first biology guide.
Reviews:
I have bought other items form the Quick Reference Guidebefore, and I was not impressed with this one. This Biology 2 sheet held information on the evidence of evolution, mostly from a primary school level as well as modern uses for DNA technolgy…but very limited, maybe a sentacne here and there. Most other sheets have data needed to memorize or for quick reference, this particualr one didn't. It could be usefull if this is the first time you heard of Darwin's Theory of Evlution or that Dolley the Sheep was cloned, othe than that save the two bucks.Elena Karmacheva

Reviews:
"Study of Living Things" – such a great way to introduce a biology course. This biology course is thorough, easy to read and full of great pictures and diagrams. Each chapter gives a list of objectives and and vocabulary words which are great study tools. The labs instructions are clear and easy to follow and are given in the student book – although the lab manual would be a definite asset for keeping things easily organized. We loved the often complex yet beautiful pictures that accompany every chapter. This course peaked the interest of my 9'th grader who insisted he wasn't interested in Biology. A great asset to anyone looking for a biology credit.User

Reviews:
I work as a teaching assistant in a Calif. public high school. We have a shortage of this preferred textbook. Two students in classes of about 40 must share one book per two students. There was no book for me to use, to aid my special ed, learning disabled students. This book was in like new condition- it was perfect! The teacher was so thrilled, he stored it in his back office, he didn't want to let it out of the classroom! If I am not assigned to Biology classes next year, I told him I would donate it to him. He was so grateful. Thank you very much.fashiongifts4u
This is a required text book for my high school students. Not sure what they think of it. But it is great to have a copy to keep at home rather than carrying it back & forth.c_langsdorf
