1. Bob Dylan In America [Book]

Product Details:
A unique look at nobel prize winner bob dylan's place in american cultural history through unprecedented access to dylan's studio tapes, recording notes, and rare photographs.sean wilentz discovered bob dylan’s music as a teenager growing up in greenwich village. now, almost half a century later, he revisits dylan’s work with the skills of an eminent american historian as well as the passion of a fan. beginning with dylan’s explosion onto the scene in 1961, wilentz follows the emerging artist as he develops a body of work unique in america’s cultural history. using his unprecedented access to studio tapes, recording notes, and rare photographs, he places dylan’s music in the context of its time and offers a stunning critical appreciation of dylan both as a songwriter and performer.
Reviews:
This is an affectionate and informative piece of writing from someone who, a) has a personal insight into Dylan’s early appearance as a raw folk singer and has followed his career ever since, and, b) draws on the writer’s knowledge of the history of American culture to show its influence on Dylan’s songs and other creative output. Good to read alongside other books about Dylan and obviously doesn’t include references to the man’s most recent output as this book published in 2010.Mr H.
Good dealer. Everything fine. The book is Fantastic.lobl76
2. The Dylan Tapes: Friends, Players, And Lovers Talkin' Early Bob Dylan [Book]

Product Details:
The raw material and interviews behind anthony scaduto's iconic biography of bob dylan draw an intimate and multifaceted portrait of the singer-songwriter who defined his era when anthony scaduto's bob dylan: an intimate biography was first published in 1971, the nobel prize-winning songwriter, at thirty, had already released some of the most iconic albums of the 1960s, including highway 61 revisited and blonde on blonde. scaduto's book was one of the first to take an investigative journalist's approach to its subject and set the standard for rock music biography. the dylan tapes, compiled from thirty-six hours of interviews, is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of scaduto's landmark book–and a close-up encounter with pivotal figures in dylan's life. these reel-to-reel tapes, found in a box in scaduto's basement, are a never-bootlegged trove of archival material about dylan, drawn from conversations with those closest to him during the early years of his career. echo helstrom, dylan's "girl from the north country," is here, as are suze rotolo, who graced the cover of the freewheelin' album, and joan baez, remembering her relationship "to bobby." from these reflections and frank conversations, many published here for the first time, a complex, finely observed picture emerges of one of the best known yet most enigmatic musicians of our time.

The ultimate biography of the musical icon. bob dylan is a music hero to generations. he's also an international bestselling artist, a pulitzer prize–winning author, and an oscar winner for “things have changed.” his career is stronger and more influential than ever. how did this happen, given the road to oblivion he seemed to choose more than two decades ago? dylan's 72, and this final act of his career is more interesting than ever—yet the classic biographies like bob dylan: behind the shades (first published 1991, updated 2001) and even his own chronicles: volume one (published 2005) came too soon to cover this act. now this groundbreaking biography digs deep into bob dylan lore—including subjects dylan himself left out of chronicles: volume one. dylan: the biography moves beyond analysis of lyrics or well-worn biographical facts to focus on why this beloved artist's american odyssey has touched so many souls—and how both dylan and his audience have changed along the way. what happened during the past two decades to transform a heroin addict into one of the most astonishing literary and musical icons in american history? through extensive interviews and connections with dylan's friends, family, sidemen, and fans, los angeles times journalist dennis mcdougal builds a new understanding of dylan, as well as the real story behind the myths. was his romantic life, especially with sara dylan, much more complicated than it appears? was his motorcycle accident a cover for drug rehab? what really happened to dylan when his career fell apart, and how did he find his way back? to what does he attribute his astonishing success? mcdougal's interviews and meticulous research offer a revealing new understanding of these older questions—and of the new chapter dylan is writing in his life and career.

5. Bob Dylan: The Stories Behind The Songs, 1962-69 [Book]

Product Details:
In this book, andy gill assess the circumstances behind dylan's most famous songs, tracing the artist's progress from young tyro folkie to acclaimed protest singer, and through the subsequent changes which saw him invent folk-rock and transform rock 'n' roll with symbolist poetry, before retreating into country-tinged conservatism just as his followers were engaged in the great psychedelic freak-show of the late 1960s. even then, he couldn't help but innovate, introducing the world to another strain of popular music-country-rock-which would come to dominate the american charts through the next decade. always one step ahead of the crowd, always pushing himself to extend the boundaries of his art, the dylan of the 1960s remains a beacon of integrity to which fans and fellow musicians keep returning.

6. Bob Dylan And The British Sixties: A Cultural History [Book]

Product Details:
Britain played a key role in bob dylan's career in the 1960s. he visited britain on several occasions and performed across the country both as an acoustic folk singer and as an electric-rock musician. his tours of britain in the mid-1960s feature heavily in documentary films such as d.a. pennebaker's don't look back and martin scorsese's no direction home and the concerts contain some of his most acclaimed ever live performances. dylan influenced british rock musicians such as the beatles, the animals, and many others; they, in turn, influenced him.yet this key period in dylan's artistic development is still under-represented in the extensive literature on dylan. tudor jones rectifies that glaring gap with this deeply researched, yet highly readable, account of dylan and the british sixties. he explores the profound impact of dylan on british popular musicians as well as his intense, and at times fraught, relationship with his uk fan base. he also provides much interesting historical context – cultural, social, and political – to give the reader a far greater understanding of a defining period of dylan's hugely varied career. this is essential reading for all dylan fans, as well as for readers interested in the tumultuous social and cultural history of the 1960s.
7. Still On The Road: The Songs Of Bob Dylan, 1974-2006 [Book]

Product Details:
From the dust jacket: the second of two volumes, this companion to every song that bob dylan ever wrote is the most comprehensive book on the words of america's greatest songwriter. here you'll find not just opinionated commentary or literary interpretation, but facts, first and foremost. clinton heylin is the world's leading dylan biographer and expert, and he has arranged the songs-including a number that have never been performed-in a continually surprising chronology of when they were actually written rather than when they appeared on albums. using newly discovered manuscripts, anecdotal evidence, and a seemingly limitless knowledge of every bob dylan live performance, he has uncovered a wealth of information about the songs, leaving no stone unturned in his research. reading this volume will fundamentally change how you hear dylan's songs and will make you want to revisit his lesser-known masterpieces. this is an essential purchase for every true bob dylan fan-as a guide to the man's work, it will never be surpassed.
8. Hard Rain: Bob Dylan, Oral Cultures, And The Meaning Of History [Book]

Product Details:
Bob dylan's iconic 1962 song "a hard rain's a-gonna fall" stands at the crossroads of musical and literary traditions. a visionary warning of impending apocalypse, it sets symbolist imagery within a structure that recalls a centuries-old form. written at the height of the 1960s folk music revival amid the ferment of political activism, the song strongly resembles–and at the same time reimagines–a traditional european ballad sung from scotland to italy, known in the english-speaking world as "lord randal." alessandro portelli explores the power and resonance of "a hard rain's a-gonna fall," considering the meanings of history and memory in folk cultures and in dylan's work. he examines how the ballad tradition to which "lord randal" belongs shaped dylan's song and how dylan drew on oral culture to depict the fears and crises of his own era. portelli recasts the song as an encounter between dylan's despairing vision, which questions the meaning and direction of history, and the message of resilience and hope for survival despite history's nightmares found in oral traditions. a wide-ranging work of oral history, hard rain weaves together interviews from places as varied as italy, england, and india with portelli's autobiographical reflections and critical analysis, speaking to the enduring appeal of dylan's music. by exploring the motley traditions that shaped dylan's work, this book casts the distinctiveness and depth of his songwriting in a new light.

12. The Philosophy Of Modern Song [Book]

Product Details:
The philosophy of modern song is bob dylan’s first book of new writing since 2004’s chronicles: volume one—and since winning the nobel prize for literature in 2016. dylan, who began working on the book in 2010, offers his extraordinary insight into the nature of popular music. he writes over sixty essays focusing on songs by other artists, spanning from stephen foster to elvis costello, and in between ranging from hank williams to nina simone. he analyzes what he calls the trap of easy rhymes, breaks down how the addition of a single syllable can diminish a song, and even explains how bluegrass relates to heavy metal. these essays are written in dylan’s unique prose. they are mysterious and mercurial, poignant and profound, and often laugh-out-loud funny. and while they are ostensibly about music, they are really meditations and reflections on the human condition. running throughout the book are nearly 150 carefully curated photos as well as a series of dream-like riffs that, taken together, resemble an epic poem and add to the work’s transcendence. in 2020, with the release of his outstanding album rough and rowdy ways, dylan became the first artist to have an album hit the billboard top 40 in each decade since the 1960s. the philosophy of modern song contains much of what he has learned about his craft in all those years, and like everything that dylan does, it is a momentous artistic achievement.
Reviews:
Fascinating insights on modern music. As always, Bob Dylan is beautifully poetic in his writing.Claire
Don't go looking for anything contemporary here: the 'modern' songs are a selection of the songs that influenced Bob Dylan way back when. You may not even recognize some of them. And some are long forgotten. He takes off from each song, giving us its provenance but also the feelings and extravagant thoughts these songs evoke – in him. No one but Dylan could have written this book.Mickey B.
Love, love, love this book. It's a great insight into some of the songs that have inspired Dylan, along with fantastic graphics and photos, which are a visual treat in themselves. No index, however, and the songs aren't listed in alphabetical order (so I created my own index). Missing are Joe Cocker, Matt Monroe, Leonard Cohen – and I'm still looking for a mention of Buddy Holly, even though Dylan says Holly inspired him. Little Richard gets two chapters. All in all, this book is a treasure – a sort of printed version of Theme Time Radio Hour.Bobfan
13. The Lyrics: 1961-2020 [Book]

Product Details:
A major publishing event—a beautiful, comprehensive collection of the lyrics of bob dylan with artwork from thirty-three albums, edited and with an introduction by christopher ricks.as it was well put by al kooper (the man behind the organ on “like a rolling stone”), “bob is the equivalent of william shakespeare. what shakespeare did in his time, bob does in his time.” christopher ricks, editor of t. s. eliot, samuel beckett, tennyson, and the oxford book of english verse, has no argument with mr. kooper's assessment, and dylan is attended to accordingly in this authoritative edition of his lyrics. in the words of ricks: “for fifty years, all the world has delighted in bob dylan's books of words and more than words: provocative, mysterious, touching, baffling, not-to-be-pinned-down, intriguing, and a reminder that genius is free to do as it chooses. and, again and again, these are not the words that he sings on the initially released albums.” this edition changes things, giving us the words from officially released studio and live recordings, as well as selected variant lyrics and revisions to these, recent revisions and retrospective ones; and, from the archives, words that, till now, have not been published. the lyrics, edited with diligence by christopher ricks, lisa nemrow, and julie nemrow. as set down, as sung, and as sung again.

14. A Simple Twist Of Fate: Bob Dylan And The Making Of Blood On The Tracks [Book]

Product Details:
"so fascinatingly behind-the-scenes that it will make you listen to the album as if you've never heard it before."–esquirein 1974 bob dylan wrote, recorded, reconsidered, and then re-recorded the best-selling studio album of his career. blood on the tracks was composed as dylan's twelve-year marriage began to unravel, and songs like "tangled up in blue" and "shelter from the storm" have become templates for multidimensional, adult songs of love and loss. yet the story behind the creation of this album has never been fully told; even the credits on the present-day album sleeve are inaccurate. dylan recorded the album twice-once in new york city and again in minneapolis, with a rag-tag gang of local musicians, quickly rewriting many of the songs in the process. for a simple twist of fate, the authors have interviewed the musicians and producers, industry insiders, and others, creating an engaging chronicle of how one musician channeled his pain and confusion into great art.
Reviews:
It was good…thats all I have to say !packman6161
Fans will enjoy a picture of Dylan at work. How and why Dylan puts this in and leaves that out, it's a cool story. But one of the co-authors has a big ax to grind: he feels he's owed credit for playing, which he is, I guess, but also claims he should get royalties, which no sideman gets from studio work, not even the very top guys. Skip the whining, though, and this is not a bad book about making one hell of a good record.this_friday
15. Dylan's Visions Of Sin [Book]

Product Details:
Bob dylan's ways with words are a wonder, matched as they are with his music and verified by those voices of his. in response to the whole range of dylan early and late (his songs of social conscience, of earthly love, of divine love, and of contemplation), this critical appreciation listens to dylan's attentive genius, alive in the very words and their rewards. "fools they made a mock of sin." dylan's is an art in which sins are laid bare (and resisted), virtues are valued (and manifested), and the graces brought home. the seven deadly sins, the four cardinal virtues (harder to remember?), and the three heavenly graces: these make up everybody's world — but dylan's in particular. or rather, his worlds, since human dealings of every kind are his for the artistic seizing. pride is anatomized in "like a rolling stone," envy in "positively 4th street," anger in "only a pawn in their game" … but, hearteningly, justice reclaims "hattie carroll," fortitude "blowin' in the wind," faith "precious angel," hope "forever young," and charity "watered-down love." in the "new yorker, alex ross wrote that "ricks's writing on dylan is the best there is. unlike most rock critics — 'forty-year-olds talking to ten-year-olds, ' dylan has called them — he writes for adults." in the "times (london), bryan appleyard maintained that "ricks, one of the most distinguished literary critics of our time, is almost the only writer to have applied serious literary intelligence to dylan …" dylan's countless listeners (and even the artist himself, who knows?) may agree with w.h. auden that ricks "is exactly the kind of critic every poet dreams of finding."
