3. Song Of Spider-Man: The Inside Story Of The Most Controversial Musical In Broadway History [Book]

Product Details:
“one of the best literary works of this year” (miami herald-tribune): the true story of a theatrical dream—or nightmare—come true…the making of the spider-man musical.as you might imagine, writing a broadway musical has its challenges. but it turns out there are challenges one can’t begin to imagine when collaborating with two rock legends and a superstar director to stage the biggest, most expensive production in theater history. renowned director julie taymor picked playwright glen berger to cowrite the book for a $25 million spider-man musical. together—along with u2’s bono and edge—they would shape a work that was technically daring and emotionally profound, with a story fueled by the hero’s quest for love…and the villains’ quest for revenge. or at least, that’s what they’d hoped for. but when charismatic producer tony adams died suddenly, the show began to lose its footing. and then came the injuries. and then came word-of-mouth about the show itself. what followed was a pageant of foul-ups, falling-outs, ever-more harrowing mishaps, and a whole lot of malfunctioning spider legs. this “circus-rock-and-roll-drama,” with its $65 million price tag, had become more of a spectacle than its creators ever wished for. during the show’s unprecedented seven months of previews, the company’s struggles to reach opening night inspired breathless tabloid coverage and garnered international notoriety. through it all, berger observed the chaos with his signature mix of big ambition and self-deprecating humor.

5. Strike Up The Band: A New History Of Musical Theatre [Book]

Product Details:
The way some histories portray the advent of musicals, you'd think the genre emerged fully formed with show boat. yet in truth, it took root decades earlier. in strike up the band scott miller tells the whole story of musicals, pulling back the curtain on the amazing innovation and adventurousness of the art form, revealing its political and social conscience, and chronicling its incredibly rapid evolution over the last century. strike up the band focuses not only on what happened on stage but also on how it happened and why it matters to us today. it's a different kind of history that explores the famous and, especially, the not-so famous productions to discover the lineage that paved the way to contemporary musicals. digging into 150 shows, miller offers a forward-looking perspective on treasures from each era – such as anything goes, west side story, hair, and rent – while also looking at fascinating, genre-busting, and often short-lived productions, including bat boy, rocky horror show, promenade, and the capeman, to see how even obscure or commercially unsuccessful musicals defined and advanced the form. moving decade by decade, miller offers insight and inside information about the artistic approaches various composers, lyricists, bookwriters, and directors have taken, how those approaches have changed over time, and what social and historical forces continue to shape musical theatre today. he provides a strong sense of what groups have historically controlled the industry and how other groups' hard work and vision continue to change the musical theatre landscape for the better. in fact, strike up the band opens a new and vitally important discussion of the roles played in the musical's history by people of color, by gays and lesbians, by people with disabilities, and by women. it frames musical theatre as an important, irreplaceable piece of american history and demonstrates how it reflects the social and political conditions of its time – and how it changes them. on broadway or off, strike up the band is as adventuresome, detailed, and thoughtful in tracing the story behind the musical as it is in celebrating the form's diversity, vigor, innovation, and promise. join scott miller not only in commemorating great moments on stage, but in gaining a powerful understanding of what the musical was, what it is today, and what it is becoming.

Reviews:
While a little lighter on his frequently beautifully chosen and always informative illustrations, this second reference work / joyous memory book putting Broadway musicals in a historical context is a delight from start to finish. While one might quibble at Steven Suskin's standards for inclusion (which omitted from Volume 1 a few fascinating flops like JOTHAM VALLEY – 31perf., 1951 or TOPLINSKY OF NOTRE DAME – 60perf. 1946-47) at well over a thousand highly entertaining pages, one does not feel cheated. I've never met the man, but Suskin is one of those rare writers who you can disagree with (which, for me is frequently) but still enjoy his opinion and style of expression. His intent here is, in his words, not to tell what the musicals of yesteryear WERE (there are plenty of other record books for that) but what they were LIKE. To that end, we get the essential credits (shows arranged alphabetically for quick access), a breakdown of the critical response, whether the show turned a profit or not, healthy extracts from the major reviews and a summarizing overview of the show from Suskin himself often preserving the essential backstage stories that are Broadway history – all buttressed by a series of wildly useful appendices and a comprehensive index. In his overview of the almost 20 years covered by this volume, Suskin has a depressing chart of the major composer lyricists whose first Broadway works appeared during each decade of his series, observing there were none (then perceptible) from 1976 to 1986. His own chart begs for yet another Volume in the series: there are another healthy 20 years to cover and in that time we have had a healthy new wave of major composer/lyricists who DO threaten to stand proudly alongside the greats of the past. Steven, we need you!esche201

'Broadway Stories' is a fascinating series of interviews with and profiles of various contributors to a single Broadway season. What makes this work unique is that the author presents not only the stars and playwrights, but also such often-ignored personages as a choreographer, a producer, an understudy, and a chorus member, in addition to others. The author shows great skill in creating indelible portraits of his subjects, and has a lively writing style that makes this book an easy read. I recommend it heartily.egee3
