1. At The Center Of The Storm: My Years At The Cia [Book]

Product Details:
In the whirlwind of accusations and recriminations that emerged in the wake of 9/11 and the iraq war, one man's vital testimony has been conspicuously absent. candid and gripping, at the center of the storm recounts george tenet's time at the central intelligence agency, a revealing look at the inner workings of the most important intelligence organization in the world during the most challenging times in recent history. with unparalleled access to both the highest echelons of government and raw intelligence from the field, tenet illuminates the cia's painstaking attempts to prepare the country against new and deadly threats, disentangles the interlocking events that led to 9/11, and offers explosive new information on the deliberations and strategies that culminated in the u.s. invasion of iraq.beginning with his appointment as director of central intelligence in 1997, tenet unfolds the momentous events that led to 9/11 as he saw and experienced them: his declaration of war on al-qa'ida; the cia's covert operations inside afghanistan; the worldwide operational plan to fight terrorists; his warnings of imminent attacks against american interests to white house officials in the summer of 2001; and the plan for a coordinated and devastating counterattack against al-qa'ida laid down just six days after the attacks. in doing so, he sets the record straight about cia operations and shows readers that the truth is more complex than suggested in other versions of recent history offered thus far. through it all, tenet paints an unflinching self-portrait of a man caught between the warring forces of the administration's decision-making process, the reams of frightening intelligence pouring in from around the world, and his own conscience. in at the center of the storm, george tenet draws on his unmatched experience within the opaque mirrors of intelligence and provides crucial information previously undisclosed to offer a moving, revelatory profile of both a man and a nation in times of crisis.

2. Legacy Of Ashes: The History Of The Cia [Book]

Product Details:
Here is the hidden history of the cia: why eleven presidents and three generations of cia officers have been unable to understand the world; why nearly every cia director has left the agency in worse shape than he found it; and how these failures have profoundly jeopardized our national security. for sixty years, the cia has managed to maintain a formidable reputation in spite of its terrible record, burying its blunders in top-secret archives. its mission was to know the world–when it did not succeed, it set out to change the world instead. now pulitzer prize-winning journalist weiner offers the first definitive history of the cia, based on more than 50,000 documents, primarily from the archives of the cia itself, and hundreds of interviews with cia veterans, including ten directors of central intelligence.–from publisher description.
Reviews:
This is an astonishing book for several reasons, the main one being how well it lays bare the awful, inept, bungling history of the CIA (not that we expected 100% competence) and does so exceptionally well, with the overwhelming majority of source material coming from interviews with those involved and secret CIA archives. It is also exceptionally well told, never boring inspite of its length and reading like a thriller at various points. An excellent book.
very good book and i got it in less than five days !keitrobert-33

cause I enjoyed reading the story linechefjam114
Book delved into the inner workings of an agent and his contacts and showed the standard stupid bureaucracy of government, but also showed howeffective one person can be if they do their job properly. And, there was too much redaction to fill in the blanks. I also would have liked to have known how it ended with Kate and the other women in the book.14629

6. The Very Best Men: The Daring Early Years Of The Cia [Book]

Product Details:
The four men who ran covert operations for the cia during the early years were known as the "clique". they came from an elite class that believed it was their duty in life to run the world; it was the lesson they learned from winning world war ii, and it was their job in washington. this was the high age of the cia, when it was the president's personal action arm, overthrowing governments, bribing heads of state, and plotting assassinations in a global secret war against communism. author evan thomas goes behind the scenes to recreate the personal drama of the four glamorous and ultimately tragic figures:. because they operated in secret, these men are not well known to history, but within the inner circles of washington, they were regarded as the best and the brightest. their fall was a great personal tragedy with momentous consequences: the reckless acts of these men nearly plunged the united states into world war iii during the cuban missile crisis, and their plots have fueled conspiracy theorists ever since. drawing on extensive interviews with old spooks and the social friends and family of his subjects, thomas has written a highly readable narrative that brings to life a crucial piece of american history.

7. Breaking Cover: My Secret Life In The Cia And What It Taught Me About What's Worth Fighting For [Book]

Product Details:
A real-life, can't-put-down spy memoir.the cia is looking for walking contradictions. recruiters seek out potential agents who can keep a secret yet pull classified information out of others; who love their country but are willing to leave it behind for dangerous places; who live double lives, but can be trusted with some of the nation's most highly sensitive tasks.michele rigby assad was one of those people.as a cia agent and a counterterrorism expert, michele soon found that working undercover was an all-encompassing job. the threats were real; the assignments perilous. michele spent over a decade in the agency–a woman leading some of the most highly skilled operatives on the planet, secretly serving in some of the most treacherous areas of the middle east, and at risk as a target for isis. but deep inside, michele wondered: could she really do this job? had she misunderstood what she thought was god's calling on her life? did she have what it would take to survive? the answer came when michele faced her ultimate mission, one with others' lives on the line–and it turned out to have been the plan for her all along. in breaking cover, michele has at last been cleared to drop cover and tell her story: one of life-or-death stakes; of defeating incredible odds; and most of all, of discovering a faith greater than all her fears.
Reviews:
Great insight into why we should support and be grateful to our government agents. My son served in Iraq in 2003 during the first year of the war and I'm encouraged to see the quality of the undercover support given to our troops, the innocent Iraqis and those of us back at home. I also glorify God for His protection and guidance for those who belong to Him!martiestreasures
I find that Michele Rigby Assad's book is indeed captivating. The story she tells of how she got involved with the CIA all the way up to helping persecuted Christians find sanctuary in Slovakia (as they were willing and ready to help Christians in true need) is interesting to say the least. She gives a lot of background information on herself, primarily, and how everything she has been able to accomplish, by God's hand, to continue on in humanitarian endeavors. She is a true protector of those who are of the Christian faith. In a way she reminds me of others, not simply of Moses; I'd say she's in the hall of fame alongside Deborah, Ruth, and even so far as to say Esther who married Ahasuerus. The simplest thing I can say about the book is that once you pick it up and start reading you won't want to put it down. Michele, as I said, chronicles her rise before the CIA, how she got into working with them, giving real-life scenarios she went through, and ultimately how she left the CIA. I admire her and her husband for the work God enabled them to do in rescuing others from harm and helping them get to a safe place. Truly God is our safe place, but these two people were willing to risk their lives to live out their faith as God called them to do.Benhli42

Reviews:
Very, far from reality.Uncle
This is an excellent followup to the bestseller 'Spy the Lie' which i have also read. Just be sure to read spy the lie before reading this one and not the other way around or it will make less sense. I loved the approach of "now you know how to spot when someone is lying, lets look at how to get the truth" and making them seperate books. It was very specific and thorough and i have already used its lessons (from both books) in my everyday life to scary levels of effect. This series is definately life changing. I give it 5 suspicious looking liars out of 5.Vault Dweller 101

12. In Deep: The Fbi, The Cia, And The Truth About America's Deep State [Book]

Product Details:
A two-time pulitzer prize–winning journalist’s investigation of the "deep state." three-quarters of americans believe that a group of unelected government and military officials secretly manipulate or direct national policy in the united states. president trump blames the "deep state" for his impeachment. but what is the american "deep state" and does it really exist? to conservatives, the “deep state” is an ever-growing government bureaucracy, an "administrative state" that relentlessly encroaches on the individual rights of americans. liberals fear the "military-industrial complex"—a cabal of generals and defense contractors who they believe routinely push the country into endless wars. every modern american president—from carter to trump—has engaged in power struggles with congress, the cia, and the fbi. every cia and fbi director has suspected white house aides of members of congress of leaking secrets for political gain. frustrated americans increasingly distrust the politicians, unelected officials, and journalists who they believe unilaterally set the country’s political agenda. american democracy faces its biggest crisis of legitimacy in a half century. this sweeping exploration examines the cia and fbi scandals of the past fifty years—from the church committee’s exposure of cold war abuses, to abscam, to false intelligence about iraq’s weapons of mass destruction, to nsa mass surveillance revealed by edward snowden. it then investigates the claims and counterclaims of the trump era, and the relentless spread of conspiracy theories online and on-air. while trump says he is the victim of the "deep state," democrats accuse the president and his allies of running a de facto "deep state" of their own that operates outside official government channels and smears rivals, both real and perceived. the feverish debate over the "deep state" raises core questions about the future of american democracy. is it possible for career government officials to be politically neutral? was congress’s impeachment of donald trump conducted properly? how vast should the power of a president be? based on dozens of interviews with career cia operatives and fbi agents, in deep answers whether the fbi, cia, or politicians are protecting or abusing the public’s trust.

13. The Cia As Organized Crime: How Illegal Operations Corrupt America And The World [Book]

Product Details:
This book provides a cross-section of douglas valentine's investigations into cia engagement in terrorism, drugs, and propaganda. author of three books on cia operations, valentine's research into cia activities began when cia director william colby gave him free access to interview cia officials who had been involved in various aspects of the phoenix program in south vietnam. it was a permission colby was to regret. the cia would rescind it, making every effort to impede publication of the phoenix program, which documented the cia's elaborate system of population surveillance, control, entrapment, imprisonment, torture and assassination in vietnam. while researching phoenix, valentine learned that the cia allowed opium and heroin to flow from its secret bases in laos, to generals and politicians on its payroll in south vietnam. his investigations into this illegal activity focused on the cia's relationship with the federal drugs agencies mandated by congress to stop illegal drugs from entering the united states. based on interviews with senior officials, valentine wrote two subsequent books, the strength of the wolf and the strength of the pack, showing how the cia infiltrated federal drug law enforcement agencies and commandeered their executive management, intelligence and foreign operations staffs in order to ensure that the flow of drugs continues unimpeded to traffickers and foreign officials in its employ. ultimately, portions of his research materials would be archived at the national security archive, texas tech university's vietnam center, and john jay college. this book includes excerpts from the above titles along with subsequent articles and transcripts of interviews on a range of current topics, with a view to shedding light on the systemic dimensions of the cia's ongoing illegal and extra-legal activities. these terrorism and drug law enforcement articles and interviews illustrate how the cia's activities impact social and political movements abroad and in the united states. a common theme is the cia's ability to deceive and propagandize the american public through its impenetrable government-sanctioned shield of official secrecy and plausible deniability. though investigated by the church committee in 1975, cia praxis then continues to inform cia praxis now. valentine tracks its steady infiltration into practices targeting the last population to be subjected to the exigencies of the american empire: the american people.

Douglas Valentine possesses an almost intimidating intellect, coupled with the soul of a poet. Nobody has done anything quite like what he has done and then written so eloquently about it. A remarkable human being who's name more people should know. The fact that they don't is indeed a shame, as nobody is more devoted to the pursuits of truth and beauty as he is. I couldn't recommend this book and his other works enough.Arthur

Critical to putting todays news in perspective.allan352
Mr. Blum has worked with ex-CIA operatives in formulating histories held in secrecy by U.S. government sources. Other books on the subject fail to document information disagreeable to government image. Mr. Blum's book is unvarnished truth, containing over 80 pages of footnoted documentation. It's not a picture Americans are invited to peruse in our educative processes, yet it is invaluable in determining direction-realities today, if one truly wishes to "question authority".nonclassical1

Many books, fiction and nonfiction alike, purport to probe the inner workings of the u.s. central intelligence agency. many attempt to create spine-tingling suspense or allege that america's civilian spy operation has run amok and been infested with rogues and criminals. in fact it's uniquea straightforward, honest, surprisingly captivating memoir by one of the cia's most well-known and honored career officers. for more than three decades, richard l. holm worked in the agency's directorate of operationsnow the national clandestine servicethe component directly responsible for collecting human intelligence. his assignments took him to seven countries on three continents, and his travels added many more destinations. at almost every turn holm encountered his share of dangerous characters and situations, including one that nearly ended his life before he turned 30. it also reveals holm's private life, his roots and family, his courtship and marriage, and his four daughters, whom he affectionately calls his "platoon." webster's dictionary defines the word "holm" as an island in a stream. that is an appropriate analogy. he served his country with distinction, in good times and bad, displaying extreme courage under the direst of circumstances and a sense of honor that can only be considered unshakeable. and he describes it all with a keen eye and a distinctive wit. his is a classic american story that conveys, vividly and unforgettably, a life in the cia.
