Complete and comprehensive in a beautifully illustrated and lavish presentation. More than just fashion illustration but rather an examination of how history and culture was influential in the evolution of style. A thorough look at western design. The only negatives are that modern era clothing is limited to runway styles and there is little on other cultures.alamogal

10. Queen Of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore To The Revolution [Book]
Product Details:
In this dazzling new vision of the ever-fascinating queen, a dynamic young historian reveals how marie antoinette's bold attempts to reshape royal fashion changed the future of francemarie antoinette has always stood as an icon of supreme style, but surprisingly none of her biographers have paid sustained attention to her clothes. in queen of fashion, caroline weber shows how marie antoinette developed her reputation for fashionable excess, and explains through lively, illuminating new research the political controversies that her clothing provoked. weber surveys marie antoinette's "revolution in dress," covering each phase of the queen's tumultuous life, beginning with the young girl, struggling to survive versailles's rigid traditions of royal glamour (twelve-foot-wide hoopskirts, whalebone corsets that crushed her organs). as queen, marie antoinette used stunning, often extreme costumes to project an image of power and wage war against her enemies. gradually, however, she began to lose her hold on the french when she started to adopt "unqueenly" outfits (the provocative chemise) that, surprisingly, would be adopted by the revolutionaries who executed her. weber's queen is sublime, human, and surprising: a sometimes courageous monarch unwilling to allow others to determine her destiny. the paradox of her tragic story, according to weber, is that fashion–the vehicle she used to secure her triumphs–was also the means of her undoing. weber's book is not only a stylish and original addition to marie antoinette scholarship, but also a moving, revelatory reinterpretation of one of history's most controversial figures.

Reviews:
Caroline Weber's book is a MUST for all Marie Antoinette fans out there! It now sits proudly on my bookshelf with other classics by Lever and Frasier. It is rich in detail and is a thoroughly engaging read.mindbodysouljp
This book is well researched and has all the references at the back. I have read a few books on 18th Century clothing for women and on Marie Antoinette and I found this book to be excellent and an enjoyable read.Persia
An absolutely fascinating read, this book offers so much more insight to the possible workings of Marie Antoinette's mind as she shocked all of the court with her unorthodox antics. I would highly recommend it to anyone that has a strong interest in either fashion of French history and culture. Be weary, though, as it's definitely not a light read, and did take me a while to get through it. Remember that it is, first and foremost, a biography, and reads like one. It can be dry and slow at times, which is why, if you're not enthusiastic about it, I would not recommend it. If, however, this is a topic you're highly interested it, I couldn't give it any more praise.
11. Structuring Fashion: Foundation Garments Through History [Book]
Product Details:
Shaping the body through clothing has played an important part in the evolution of fashion for hundreds of years. in europe specifically, changes in fashion have always aligned with the changes to the cuts of clothing and the outline of the human body. the bavarian national museum in munich, known as one of the most important museums of decorative arts, hosted an international conference to showcase the undergarments that have shaped fashionable silhouettes from the middle ages to the twenty-first century. structuring fashion is the culmination of this conference and the presentation of the extremely rare, world-famous pair of silk bodies worn by countess palatine dorothea sabina around 1598 that was highlighted at the event. this volume highlights the narrow waists that were achieved by laced bodices and corsets, and the intricate detailing of hoop and crinoline petticoats with 120 rich illustrations of original items. the images are accompanied by insightful essays that chronicle the history behind the clothing.

Reviews:
definitely lives up to the title! step by step instructions are fabulous. if only they invested more in the cover, (kinda looks cheap) this book is a must for everyl fashion students.
"High Fashion Sewing Secrets from the World's Best Designers" should almost have been labeled "The Encyclopedia of everything there is to know about sewing, pattern making & Designing!" Okay, I know it doesn't include everything about sewing, but I literally could not believe how much information is packed into this 246 page book! While there are plenty of tips I may never use, the majority of the tips & methods in it are practical enough that even someone new to sewing would be able to accomplish them well! In fact, there are so many tips & methods in here that I have a forest of Post-It tabs sprouting out the top, to remind me to try each exciting technique! Every time I open "High Fashion Sewing Secrets", I find new inspiration for building my wardrobe, and because most of these tips & techniques were gathered from famous couture designers, they do not look like people expect "home made" clothing to look. I enjoy having clerks at the expensive boutiques asking me if I purchased my homemade clothing at their store, because I had used these designer techniques! I don't mine looking like a million bucks because I carefully fit & detailed my homemade clothing that is made from Walmart $1.00 a yard fabrics! "Sewing Secrets" are liberally sprinkled throughout the book, along with very well done full color drawings or photos showing how to accomplish each skill. This is very helpful to people like me, who have dyslexia or other learning difficulties, because you not only have instructions, you have step by step photographs or drawings showing exactly what to do. Beyond the standard simple decoration of contrasting binding, Claire illustrates for readers how they can add sleek sophistication to their home made clothing by adding special trims or embellishments to commercial patterns, but she also shows you how you can design & create your own patterns. I cannot guarantee that every idea included in this wonderful manual is original, & never been seen anywhere else, but I can guarantee that anyone who sincerely desires to create quality clothing, even couture clothing, "High Fashion Sewing Secrets" is possibly the best resource they will find for that purpose. Despite sewing since the 4th grade, as I pored over this book, I realized how little I know about sewing! My teenage dream of becoming a fashion designer with my own boutique has not come to fruition, but I am perfectly happy to be able to learn as much about designing & making clothing as possible, to create my own unique style, and be able to do so with such a high level of expertise as is taught in "High Fashion Sewing Secrets". I would recommend "High Fashion Sewing Secrets from the World's Best Designers" to anyone who sews their own and/or their family's clothing, as well as to anyone who is interested in the field of fashion. I think the only reason this isn't a number 1 best seller is because everyone is buying clothing so cheap from China, so most households don't even have a sewing machine anymore.uptite1
Covers a lot and is pretty informative. Great reference for any sewer and much of it is still relevant.kbar7865

A “sharp and entertaining” (the wall street journal) exploration of fashion through the ages that asks what our clothing reveals about ourselves and our society.dress codes are as old as clothing itself. for centuries, clothing has been a wearable status symbol; fashion, a weapon in struggles for social change; and dress codes, a way to maintain political control. merchants dressing like princes and butchers’ wives wearing gem-encrusted crowns were public enemies in medieval societies structured by social hierarchy and defined by spectacle. in tudor england, silk, velvet, and fur were reserved for the nobility, and ballooning pants called “trunk hose” could be considered a menace to good order. the renaissance-era florentine patriarch cosimo de medici captured the power of fashion and dress codes when he remarked, “one can make a gentleman from two yards of red cloth.” dress codes evolved along with the social and political ideals of the day, but they always reflected struggles for power and status. in the 1700s, south carolina’s “negro act” made it illegal for black people to dress “above their condition.” in the 1920s, the bobbed hair and form-fitting dresses worn by free-spirited flappers were banned in workplaces throughout the united states, and in the 1940s, the baggy zoot suits favored by black and latino men caused riots in cities from coast to coast. people lose their jobs for wearing braided hair, long fingernails, large earrings, beards, and tattoos or refusing to wear a suit and tie or make-up and high heels. in some cities, wearing sagging pants is a crime. and even when there are no written rules, implicit dress codes still influence opportunities and social mobility. silicon valley ceos wear t-shirts and flip-flops, setting the tone for an entire industry: women wearing fashionable dresses or high heels face ridicule in the tech world, and some venture capitalists refuse to invest in any company run by someone wearing a suit. after reading dress codes, you’ll never think of fashion as superficial again—and getting dressed will never be the same.
