1. On Film Making An Introduction To The Craft Of The Director

Product Details:
An invaluable analysis of the director's art and craft, from one of the most revered of all film school directors. an invaluable analysis of the director's art and craft, from one of the most revered of all film school directors. alexander 'sandy' mackendrick directed classic ealing comedies plus a hollywood masterpiece, sweet smell of success. but after retiring from film-making in 1969, he then spent nearly 25 years teaching his craft at the california institute of the arts in los angeles. mackendrick produced hundreds of pages of masterly handouts and sketches, designed to guide his students to a finer understanding of how to write a story, and then use those devices peculiar to cinema in order to tell that story as effectively as possible. gathered and edited in this collection, mackendrick's teachings reveal that he had the talent not only to make great films, but also to articulate the process with a clarity and insight that will still inspire any aspirant film-maker.

Reviews:
I read a preview of this book and it looked really good, so I had to buy it. I was not disappointed. As I have been around the filmmaking scene since before I can remember (my father's in the industry) I know a thing or two about what's involved. Despite what I did know, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this pointed out a number of things I hadn't thought of; things that can easily get forgotten. It's easy to read, very informative, and goes through everything involved in making a film. (Well, so far, I'm still not done reading it) If you're thinking of making a movie (even if it's an animated one) this book is a must!chi9993

Reviews:
i bought Making Documentary Films and Videos by Barry Hampe because i have an urge to initiate myself on the principles of documentary making on the topic of social problematics and social progress. The book has helped in aquiring a set of principles to uphold to on the process of elaborating a documentary film making. In Barry Hampes book he elaborates enough on the thought process that will take you to the final product. One of the things i disliked about Hampes point of view on documentaries is that he positioned himself in an extremely neutral position politicaly wise towards the creation of documentaries which makes him dislike finger pointing which is one of the reasons i want to make documentaries. i decided to buy the book based on recomendation.wandering_leo

Reviews:
Digital Filmmaking: An Introduction is undoubtedly the best 101 textbook covering all the basics of making DV and HD movies. I confess to being prejudiced. I coauthored some other books on the subject with Pete Shaner. He wrote this one on his own taking everything we did to the next level and although I commented on the manuscript in draft this one is entirely his show. The book is full of rules to live by which taken together I call Shaner Doctrine. The paramount rule is to have a reason for everything you do. Since the director's job is primarily to be a decision maker you'll go a long way if you learn to challenge your reasons. If you don't have a plan if you don't have a rationale or a theme or a skill set or a clue ñ it will show up in one way or another on the screen or in the track. There's a companion DVD with the book. It's better than any number of lectures and only slightly less useful than a hands-on tutorial with Shaner himself. Also the example movies and lesson clips reinforce the book's chapters and teaching points. Particularly noteworthy as instruction ñ for lighting design see 'Hollywood Lighting Exposed ' for cinematography 'Alan Smithee's Hollywood Tips ' and for sound design and production 'Microphone Demo.'
