8. The Invention Of Women: Making An African Sense Of Western Gender Discourses [Book]
Product Details:
The oc woman question, oco this book asserts, is a western one, and not a proper lens for viewing african society. a work that rethinks gender as a western construction, the invention of women offers a new way of understanding both yoruban and western cultures. author oyeronke oyewumi reveals an ideology of biological determinism at the heart of western social categories-the idea that biology provides the rationale for organizing the social world. and yet, she writes, the concept of oc woman, oco central to this ideology and to western gender discourses, simply did not exist in yorubaland, where the body was not the basis of social roles. oyewumi traces the misapplication of western, body-oriented concepts of gender through the history of gender discourses in yoruba studies. her analysis shows the paradoxical nature of two fundamental assumptions of feminist theory: that gender is socially constructed and that the subordination of women is universal. the invention of women demonstrates, to the contrary, that gender was not constructed in old yoruba society, and that social organization was determined by relative age. a meticulous historical and epistemological account of an african culture on its own terms, this book makes a persuasive argument for a cultural, context-dependent interpretation of social reality. it calls for a reconception of gender discourse and the categories on which such study relies. more than that, the book lays bare the hidden assumptions in the ways these different cultures think. a truly comparative sociology of an african culture and the western tradition, it will change the way african studies and gender studies proceed. 18. Bye Bye Binary [Book]
Product Details:
Fans of feminist baby by loryn brantz will love this board book about gender expression and being true to oneself. "is it a boy? or a girl?" "what's it to ya?!" our little bundle of joy has arrived–to dismantle gender norms! a joyful baby refuses to conform to the gender binary and instead chooses toys, colors, and clothes that make them happy. this tongue-in-cheek board book is a perfect tool to encourage children to love what they love and is also a great baby shower gift for all soon-to-be-parents.
Reviews:
I’ll admit this book is a little pushy in terms of the topic. A lot of the other reviews are saying this book is teaching people to yell at people if they dont respect them which is incorrect. This book isnt meant for toddlers for sure. And probably not K – 4 elementary since its a bit pushy and can give kids the wrong idea once in a while. But Id recommend this book to maybe grade 5 – middle school aged kids. Especially if they are struggling with figuring themselves out. The books main message is really be who you want to be! And I agree with that always. The kid isnt really picking “boy” or “girl” things. Theyre just picking things they like! Like blankets and toys. Its cute, reminds me of when I picked dinosaurs over barbies. It keeps that message of pick what feels right to you! Im guessing a lot of the ppl in the reviews never actually read the book but it’s alright. Thats why im giving it a 3. Id recommend the book my auntie uncle instead though. It may be about a drag queen but it can still apply. Its very cute and spreads a really positive, sweet, and kind message! <3Its alright
