4. Prisoners Of Geography: Ten Maps That Tell You Everything You Need To Know About Global Politics [Book]

Product Details:
"all leaders are constrained by geography. their choices are limited by mountains, rivers, seas and concrete. yes, to understand world events you need to understand people, ideas and movements … but if you don't know geography, you'll never have the full picture. ; to understand putin's actions, for example, it is essential to consider that, to be a world power, russia must have a navy. and if its ports freeze for six months each year then it must have access to a warm water port – hence, the annexation of crimea was the only option for putin. to understand the middle east, it is crucial to know that geography is the reason why countries have logically been shaped as they are – and this is why invented countries (e.g. syria, iraq, libya) will not survive as nation states. ; spread over ten chapters (covering russia; china; the usa; latin america; the middle east; africa; india and pakistan; europe; japan and korea; and greenland and the arctic), using maps, essays and occasionally the personal experiences of the widely travelled author, prisoners of geography looks at the past, present and future to offer an essential guide to one of the major determining factors in world history."–

Reviews:
A very interesting and insightful book. Well written, easy to read. I've had an interest in international matters/ geopolitics from young age. I have read a quite a few books on these topics and this is one of the best so far. I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in the topic.Ajt91.travel
I loved this book, I zoomed through it quickly. I had never considered the impact geography has on politics and it explains why countries are rich/poor and its mostly due to geography. Another book I recommend which is more about economics is called "why nations fail". Getting back to prisoners of geography, I love how simple it is written and structured. Its not a big hulking book with heavy description and long chapters. Each chapter covers a part of the world and hence is self contained, the text is very conversational and simply written so unlike other books I was able to blow through it quickly, though my only complaint is that I would have liked more since it felt light. At times I found the author deviating from geography to history which isnt what I came for but these are small complaints, my feelings towards this book are overwhelmingly positive.fluxrope
As a geography graduate myself and having an interest in politics I was so interested to dip into this book which I purchased for my grandson. He is studying politics as an A level subject and particularly wanted it. I now intend to buy a copy for myself!! It gave me such an interesting background to the present problems in Afghanistan and its surrounding countries.joagile_6
5. Why Geography Matters, More Than Ever [Book]

Product Details:
A decade into the 21st century, our world is more interconnected than ever before. yet even as the global community becomes increasingly more complex and competitive, the world is changing at a rapid pace. just consider some of the major events of the 21st century: intense climate change accompanied by significant weather extremes; deadly tsunamis caused by submarine earthquakes; unprecedented terrorist attacks in the u.s., europe, and elsewhere; costly wars in iraq and afghanistan; a terrible and overlooked conflict in equatorial africa costing millions of lives; an economic crisis threatening the stability of the international system. and that's just the tip of the iceberg. in why geography matters: more than ever, acclaimed author harm de blij answers this question with one resounding affirmation: geography. in this new and revised edition of the immensely popular why geography matters, de blij shows how and why the u.s. has become the world's most geographically illiterate society of consequence—and demonstrates that this geographic illiteracy is a direct risk to america's national security. despite the current state of global entwinement and rapid change, americans seem to be less informed and less knowledgeable about the rest of the world than ever. in 2011, the nation's report card showed that only 20 percent of high school seniors were found to be proficient in geography. de blij shows why this dispiriting picture needs to change, and change now. insightful and thought-provoking, de blij's book tackles topics from the burgeoning presence of china to the troubling disarray of the european union, from the concerning nuclear ambitions of north korea to the revolutionary arab spring. peppering his writing with anecdotes from his own professional travels, de blij expands upon his original argument in a new edition that is as engaging as it is eye opening. casual students of geography and professional policy makers alike will benefit from this stimulating and crucial perspective on geography and the way it informs our understanding of the world.

I used Carson-Dellosa's products for most of my teaching career and I've not found something I couldn't use. Sometimes not in my room (special needs and sometimes to low for some items), but with relatives needing help with projects or work. This item in particular is great with my virtual kids (currently a wide range of abilities). I can show it on the screen and they can circle answers.GWENDOLYN S.
“The Complete Book of…” series is one of my favorite products. We have several of these books (Arts and Crafts, Time and Money, Starter Spanish, and Spanish) and they are always so comprehensive in the subject matter given. Because of this, they are also a valuable resource to use in multiple grade levels. The Complete Book of Maps & Geography is amazing because it covers so much in the topic and there are plenty of great activities. I plan on coupling this with the Spectrum Geography book to cover the subject in next school year. I participate in the Brand Ambassador Program for Carson Dellosa and have received this product for free to review.Kelly A.
Excellent resource. My kids in grades 2-6 are all able to use this product and enjoy it. We do worksheets 2 days per week. It is not boring at all. There are easy to follow instructions for the student and mom can add to it to enhance the lesson as needed. We just completed a lesson about map keys for a mining town and I added a couple YouTube videos about mining and old mining towns in California which enhanced the lesson. My kids really enjoyed it!HAFIZ H.

14. Human Geography: An Essential Introduction [Book]

Product Details:
“a wonderfully accessible, cutting-edge text for human geography students. boyle meticulously and lucidly examines geography’s core issues and the day’s pressing economic, political, and social concerns.” —david wilson, professor, university of illinois at urbana-champaign “a wide-ranging and engaging text that will enthuse students about both the historical context of geographical thinking and the diversity of the field’s current debates.” —fiona mcconnell, associate professor, university of oxford “whilst distilling challenging concepts into accessible terms, this book is simultaneously critically questioning of western theory, development and population mantras, and more—an invaluable resource for students and instructors alike.” —elaine ho, associate professor, national university of singapore “this introduction manages to connect the histories and traditions of the discipline of human geography with the great challenges of our time and overtly demonstrates the relevance of human geography to today’s world.” —guy baeten, professor, malmö university drawing on nearly three decades of instructional experience and a wealth of testing pedagogical innovations with students, mark boyle has revised and expanded this authoritative and comprehensive introduction to human geography. as with the first edition, boyle follows the premise that “history makes geography whilst geography makes history,” and that the key to studying the principal demographic, social, political, economic, cultural and environmental processes in any region in the world today is to look at how that region has been impacted by, and in turn has impacted, the story of the rise, reign, and decline of the west. moreover he argues that human geography itself is best understood as both an intellectual endeavour and a historical, political, and institutional project. informed by recent developments in post-colonial scholarship, the book covers key concepts, seminal thinkers, and influential texts in the field. although designed for the beginner student, boyle does not shy away from ideas and debates often avoided in introductory texts, clearly communicating theory without condescension. in addition, he places human geography in its larger academic context, discussing the influences on the field from related subjects. notable features in the second edition include: extensive revision and updating of coverage of key ideas, developments, debates and case studies new chapter on uneven geographical development at different scales and development theory and practice dedicated coverage of covid-19s geographies new learning resources (figures, tables, plates, maps, deep dive boxes, etc.) throughout the text, plus learning objectives, essay questions, checklists summarizing key ideas, and guidance for further reading updated and expanded companion website with mp4 and mp3 chapter-by-chapter lectures and powerpoint slides for each chapter, new multiple-choice exam paper and additional essay-style exam questions, and a wide range of student tutorial exerciseshuman geography: an essential introduction, second edition is an excellent foundational text for undergraduate courses in human geography, globalization, western civilization, historiographies of intellectual thought, the grand public problems confronting humanity in the twenty first century, and other wider social science courses.

We are a homeschooling family of 4 boys (5,8,9,11) & we love this game! This has become an Obsessive favorite with all my boys & the fact that it does the job of a years of workbook learning makes it worth every cent. Even though we are still playing at the second level, even my 5 yr old non-reader had begun to recognize the flags of foreign countries when we’re out and about. I plan on utilizing this for basically forever – oh the many many ways you can easily play with these to learn so much & make learning a blast!Zakia
This is a good game. It can be played in a very simple way that even a small child could participate in. My children played it with the little four and five and six-year-olds. The game can also be played in more difficult ways. There are many gameplaying options. I look forward to the children learning many more things as the years go by and they are able to play the progressively more difficult options of the game. This game is great for using with the curriculum my father's world countries and cultures.Tina

Where was the garden of eden? does the nile run up? what's so bad about the badlands? davis, author of the best-selling, critically acclaimed don't know much about history (a new york times best-seller for 35 weeks with over one half million copies in print) turns his inimitable wit and wide-ranging knowledge to the subject of geography, and proves once and for all that there is a lot more to it than labeling countries on a map. – did napoleon know how far it was to moscow? in don't know much about geography, davis first examines the often amusing perceptions people have had through the ages about the world and the universe. for example, columbus thought the world was shaped like a pear – and he was proved right in 1958. davis then looks at the world map today and explores how it has been affected by historical and political changes. transforming events like the crumbling of the berlin wall, the demise of the soviet union, and the persian gulf war all involved questions of geography and gave credence to the saying – geography is destiny. – who killed the dead sea? recent surveys show that americans constitute something of a "lost society." it is a book that you can read and return to with pure joy. in it davis shows how geography really is a great crossroads of many fields: history, economics, biology, meteorology, astronomy, and even politics. and along the way, he addresses the vexing questions that have plagued most of us since grade school. – what do tides have to do with tidal waves? as in his previous book, davis makes his subject matter appealing, entertaining, and endlessly fascinating by emphasizing the personalities that helped shape the world and the "personality" of geographical concepts and places in the world. don't know much about geography is also an affectionate ode to the earth: a celebration of the whole planet, a searching investigation of the destruction of our habitat – and a practical guide to saving our home planet. – are there canaries in the canary islands? for all those who have felt geographically ignorant ever since gas stations stopped handing out free maps, here is all they need to know in one enormously informative and highly entertaining volume.
