Reviews:
I was first alerted to this book by a lady traveller I was sat next to on an internal flight in the USA nearly two years ago. The moment I returned home I ordered it from my local library. If you're interested in your own (& those dear to you) personal diet, health and wellbeing you need to read this book. Since reading it I mainly eat fish, difficult when my wife has never, as an adult, eaten fish and have reduced my red meat consumption down to a minimum as well as eating a great many more seeds, grains, fruit and juice. I've also reduced my alcohol consumption. I've now bought my own copy as a result of my eldest son's interest – he's 25, stopped smoking and living a healthier lifestyle.ltehome
This book is my Bible. I've been studying raw whole foods diets for many years, and although I am a lay person, I know how I feel …and LOOK … when I eat this way. This book does an excellent job of presenting well-researched, even academic, material in a highly readable, easy-to-grasp manner…complete with lots of graphs and charts that, for visual learners like me, demonstrate the text in a flash. The film, Forks Over Knives, was my first introduction to the concepts covered in The China Study, and watching it made me hungry for more info. Dr. Campbell is a fearless pioneer in his field, one to be admired and respected.jamaica-judy
This book was written by a research doctor and explains why we get sick & fat and backs it all up with 30 years of research data. Also, it is NOT selling any product or service (like weight watchers). It just explains how to improve your health and the reasoning behind the recommendations. It also explains the economic reasons why, even though they know, our government, drug companies and most doctors will not tell the American public about it. I have lost weight, lowered my Blood Pressure about 30 points to 120/73 and my cholesterol dropped from 204 to 146 in 3 weeks by just changing the way I eat. After 2 heart attacks (and bypass surgery) I finally got serious about my health. Get this book, it costs about the same as a Super Sized meal @ McDonalds and can change your life for the better in just weeks.GLGINAZ
2. Healthy At 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets Of The World's Healthiest And Longest-Lived Peoples [Book]

Product Details:
Why do some people age in failing health and sadness, while others grow old with vitality and joy? through the example of four very different cultures that have the distinction of producing some of the world’s healthiest, oldest people, robbins reveals the secrets for living an extended and fulfilling life in which our later years become a period of wisdom, vitality, and happiness. from abkhasia in the caucasus south of russia, where age is beauty, and vilcabamba in the andes of south america, where laughter is the greatest medicine, to hunza in central asia, where dance is ageless, and finally the southern japanese islands of okinawa, the modern shangri-la, where people regularly live beyond a century, robbins examines how the unique lifestyles of these peoples can influence and improve our own.bringing the traditions of these ancient and vibrantly healthy cultures together with the latest breakthroughs in medical science, robbins reveals that, remarkably, they both point in the same direction. the result is an inspirational synthesis of years of research into healthy aging in which robbins has isolated the characteristics that will enable us to live long and–most important–joyous lives. with an emphasis on simple, wholesome, but satisfying fare, and the addition of a manageable daily exercise routine, many people can experience great improvement in the quality of their lives now and for many years to come. but perhaps more surprising is robbins’ discovery that it is not diet and exercise alone that helps people to live well past one hundred. the quality of personal relationships is enormously important. with startling medical evidence about the effects of our interactions with others, robbins asserts that loneliness has more impact on lifespan than such known vices as smoking. there is clearly a strong beneficial power to love and connection.“ john robbins has inspired millions of people with his eloquent, clear, compassionate, and insightful guidance on the path to health and fulfillment. healthy at 100 may be his finest work to date. if you are interested in extending your health span as well as your life span, read this book! healthy at 100 is a masterpiece.”–dean ornish, m.d., president and director of the preventive medicine research institute, author of dr. dean ornish’s program for reversing heart disease“this is a remarkably open and heartfelt book full of wisdom and love by an extraordinary man who has been teaching us how to live more healthy and compassionate lives for over twenty years now. john robbins has created a new vision of aging for american society.”–john mackey, ceo, whole foods“john robbins is one of the most important voices in america today. he cuts through nonsense like no one else does. he gives hope like no one else does. his words are lifelines for both the body and soul. this book can literally save our lives.”–marianne williamson, author of a return to love and a woman’s worth“healthy at 100 is a marvelous blend of wisdom, hope, courage, and common sense. john robbins gives us caring, science, and inspiration–a beautiful diet for the heart.”–jack kornfield, co-founder of the insight meditation society and spirit rock, author of a path with heart“as the low-carb diet craze is gone, john robbins proposes a far healthier approach that leads not just to a healthy weight but also to a joyful and fulfilled life. his unique experiences and viewpoints were the reasons i wanted him to be in my film super size me. this book only reinforces my faith in him as a thought-provoking humanitarian.”–morgan spurlock, producer and director of super size me

3. The Myth Of Normal: Trauma, Illness, And Healing In A Toxic Culture [Book]

Product Details:
The instant new york times bestsellerby the acclaimed author of in the realm of hungry ghosts, a groundbreaking investigation into the causes of illness, a bracing critique of how our society breeds disease, and a pathway to health and healing.in this revolutionary book, renowned physician gabor maté eloquently dissects how in western countries that pride themselves on their healthcare systems, chronic illness and general ill health are on the rise. nearly 70 percent of americans are on at least one prescription drug; more than half take two. in canada, every fifth person has high blood pressure. in europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. and everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. so what is really “normal” when it comes to health? over four decades of clinical experience, maté has come to recognize the prevailing understanding of “normal” as false, neglecting the roles that trauma and stress, and the pressures of modern-day living, exert on our bodies and our minds at the expense of good health. for all our expertise and technological sophistication, western medicine often fails to treat the whole person, ignoring how today’s culture stresses the body, burdens the immune system, and undermines emotional balance. now maté brings his perspective to the great untangling of common myths about what makes us sick, connects the dots between the maladies of individuals and the declining soundness of society—and offers a compassionate guide for health and healing. cowritten with his son daniel, the myth of normal is maté’s most ambitious and urgent book yet.

4. The Healing Of America: A Global Quest For Better, Cheaper, And Fairer Health Care [Book]

Product Details:
Reid guides a whirlwind tour of successful health care systems worldwide, revealing possible paths toward u.s. reform. in the healing of america, new york times bestselling author t. reid shows how all the other industrialized democracies have achieved something the united states can't seem to do: provide health care for everybody at a reasonable cost. in his global quest to find a possible prescription, reid visits wealthy, free market, industrialized democracies like our own—including france, germany, japan, the u.k., and canada—where he finds inspiration in example. reid shares evidence from doctors, government officials, health care experts, and patients the world over, finding that foreign health care systems give everybody quality care at an affordable cost. and that dreaded monster “socialized medicine” turns out to be a myth. many developed countries provide universal coverage with private doctors, private hospitals, and private insurance. in addition to long-established systems, reid also studies countries that have carried out major health care reform. the first question facing these countries—and the united states, for that matter—is an ethical issue: is health care a human right? the healing of america lays bare the moral question at the heart of our troubled system, dissecting the misleading rhetoric surrounding the health care debate. reid sees problems elsewhere, too: he finds poorly paid doctors in japan, endless lines in canada, mistreated patients in britain, spartan facilities in france. still, all the other rich countries operate at a lower cost, produce better health statistics, and cover everybody. in the end, the healing of america is a good news book: it finds models around the world that americans can borrow to guarantee health care for everybody who needs it.

Reviews:
I haven't finished reading it but so far it is a great book to evaluate the health care systems of other nations to see what they are doing right instead of just being ignorant and listening to many of the politicians here in the USA. I had watched Sicko in my Sociology class and the comparison to other country's health care systems sparked my interest to the pros and cons of their systems compared to the USA – so instead of being ignorant, I decided to do some research and this book was exactly what I was looking for.casingletoncc1979
Reid compares healthcare programs of other countries and discusses both their good & bad points. You take away the idea that the US could use the best parts of these systems and spend half of the 16% of GDP we now spend and, at the same time, raise our success rate of care to be better than Slovenia. Well written, not wonky and worth every penny of its cost.AnastasiaWellington
An engaging review of health care around the globe. Reid is at his best while waist-deep experiencing regional customs of alternative medicine. His views of American medicine are classic left-wing, however, with all its ideological and funding weaknesses. As a result, there's (unwittingly?) a little bit to make everyone happy. I purchased this book as a course requirement, and it's worthwhile as another take on the U.S. healthcare scene… even if I don't completely agree with all of his conclusions.greatoak08034

Reviews:
Whether you're a doctor or you know nothing about the immune system whatsoever, this books provides an incredible foundational understanding of the human immune system in a digestible and humorous way. Beautifully illustrated in full colour with robust pages. Five stars.Crispin
Incredibly informative, well written, well presented, well illustrated. In classic Kurzgesagt style this breaks down insanely complex subject material and repackages it into a concise and easy to understand 330-ish page tome. I found this very easy to read and digest, and that is coming from an almost exclusive genre-fiction reader that finds non-fiction difficult most times.Peter
I am a slower reader and am only a couple of chapters in, but so far it's an informative well written book on a very complex topic. I work in the field but my knowledge is incomplete so was looking for something to fill those gaps. The language isn't too high level nor too basic, with analogies and anecdotes, which I love!! The pictures whilst cartoonish are very informative. I would recommend to anyone who has an interest in the immune system and it's functioning but does need a degree.Floss

Reviews:
Brilliant book. Should be made compulsory reading for the farming community and anyone interested in food.A P. Q.
I own many books on this subject matter, including this author's husbands books titled Growing a Revolution and Dirt (also, top notch). I have accumulated enough factual knowledge to know we all must learn what Industrial Farming is doing to our health and the health of planet Earth. I must say the content of this very book is a cut above all the rest of my absolutely necessary books to own. I would not do without a single one. I could recommend others, hoping you will discover them on your own in this same genre. YET I WAS SO PLEASED TO SEE THAT TARGET IS CARRYING: WHAT YOUR FOOD ATE OUR SOCIETY, THE ENTIRE EARTH, NEEDS THIS BOOK. READ VERY CAREFULLY, YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS A SINGLE POINT MADE. WHAT YOUR FOOD EATS HAS PROFOUND CONSEQUENCES!!!THEROOTMATTERS

Reviews:
The book very accurately describes many of the issues faced by young and old alike when facing their own mortality or that of a loved one. It is written in simple terms that are easy to understand. The content is difficult to read emotionally, especially for anyone who has faced these issues, but all of us need to confront end-of-life decisions. I would highly recommend this book.bobwoods1953
This book is amazing Gawande, with such compassion, spells out the complexities of planning for life's daunting journey through serious debilitating illness possibilities and aging. At 83 and 77, my husband and I both felt some clarity for ourselves about decisions we have made or need to make now to, as best we can at this point, live our best lives to the end.guillmarth_hthrqhv
This book was recommended by a friend, as my 85 year old mother is going through some very difficult times. Not only has her world distinctly changed, so it goes for myself and four other siblings. The information contained within this book is easy to comprehend and I found it very insightful on the subject at hand. The stories within the book are real, therefore making it easy to relate with my journey. I highly recommend to everyone, as the majority of us will eventually encounter the process of accepting and coping with one or more aging parents.tapa9123

Reviews:
This is an excellent book with a complete explanation of the issues around wheat. It tells you of the genetic changes made to wheat and why these are an issue, how these things effect the body and why. Easy to read even for a lay person who is not a scientist. Something everyone should read because chances are very high it effects you or someone close to you, without you realising it. Wheat could be one of the single most causes when it comes to the health issues of the last 30 years.moondancer1956
I've never had an hour glass figure, even when I was thin. But as I've gotten older, the girth around my mid-section has continued to expand, despite exercise, exercise, exercise. Earlier this year, I joined a Biggest Loser-type competition for an added incentive. I began working out and cut my calorie intake drastically. Despite the changes, the scale did not reflect my effort.. Discouraged after nearly 7 weeks of sacrifices without results, I turned to the computer. I Googled 'how to get rid of a fat belly' and 'fat belly diets' and other similar phrases. Tons of crazy potions and silly gadgets resulted. Among all those results, a few seemed valid, so I began investigating reader reviews on various sites. The Wheat Belly book had mainly positive reviews, whereas other plans were either too restrictive or too difficult to follow because of weird ingredients. I purchased the book used so that I wouldn't feel cheated too much should it, too, be a gimmick. From the reviews I read prior to purchase, I got a good idea of what the diet curtailed and began eliminating wheat products from my diet even before the book arrived. I began to see near instant results! So when the book did arrive, I was anxious to dive in and take control, finally, of my expanding equater. The author lays a good foundation as to why our society has ballooned seemingly overnight – genetically altered wheat whose effects on human health were never tested before unleashing it on us. And that wheat is in everything, from pasta to bread to cereals. It seems like we Americans have been duped again by large multinational companies that care more about the dollar than young children who have been diagnosed with diabetes, pre-diabetes, and heart disease. Or your mother, father, sister, brother or husband who are dying at alarming rates because the altered wheat is not compatible with proper human function. In the book, as I said earlier, the author lays out the history, and then he discusses the medical issues resulting from wheat. All interesting, but I jumped to the section referring what foods I should eat, the menus, and recipes. Good stuff, people! Worth every cent I paid and every cent I save from avoiding all the health problems associated with altered wheat. Bottom line: it took me awhile to get here, and it will take time to get rid of my spare tire. This is the best results I've EVER had in a diet plan. Sure, I crave cake and cookies, but not any where close to how much I hate being fat and unhealthy. And the craving are subsiding quickly. In a short time, I have lost six lbs., I think its been one week. To satisfy my bread craving and to add variety to my lunches and dinners, I have made bread with almond flour and brown rice flour. I cook them in my Express Grill gadget. I have also made pancakes with those flours – they taste rather like corn meal Johnnie cakes, but they taste like heaven with a couple of eggs (I'm not into syrup). If the typical diet has not worked for you, you are probably altered-wheat sensitive. I think taking wheat from your diet alone, without exercise, will result in weight loss. But since I am competing in a BL contest, exercise helps. I hope this review helps someone. It saddens me to think about the kids and young adults who have known no other lifestyle than fast food and genetically altered food products. How about we start a revolution and take back our health!!johnsom11
Anyone needing to lose weight should read it. The premise that we are at risk from eating wheat products should read the book . It was hard reading and if there is a better reproduction making it easier to read that is the one to buyJohn

Reviews:
There's a tremendous amount of raw data in here with many sources cited, and it has a good index which really will help you. This is very good for drawing deductions. Still good, and there's some lost information here. This is written in a very easy to read manner, and as I said, you really need to use this with the index. Don't get the later revised 1981 edition which had a few unnecessary precautions like about Vitamin A (which yes can be dangerous but it's very hard to do that and Tylenol is much more dangerous) I first found this book circa 1980 in hardcover. It really can help, if you thinksammy_finkelman8vok
Adelle Davis creates a balanced world of simple ways to begin to direct your own pathway to good health. I believe it's never too late to adopt some of her guidelines to better lifestyle changes. When we see results from illness which the medical establishment cannot 'cure' but by surgery or worse treatment, then we need to become accepting of Davis's forthright recommendations. She has passed on but her legacy is as true today as it was in her days, even more so as the world digresses into outright anarchy of opinion and greater Big Pharma rulings controlling the established Medical Companies. I enjoyed her index and Simple Solutions based on scientific bodily systems working together on an individual basis. Learning to get know our own bodies is as important as ever it was.—kathydjandkate

Reviews:
I loved this book. It's science in a friendly way. Have encouraged my friends to buy it – already lent my copy to a sibling. Best bit was the authors subtle humour, the graphs and the explanations. This book reminded me of what I'd forgotten about the biology of glucose – certainly enjoyed reading it, changed the way I eat as a result, (I understand how to eat carbohydrates better). – it is NOT a diet book!Beatrice
Lots of information delivered in a concise, easy to understand, entertaining manner. Kudos to this biochemist author, Jessie Inchauspegoldencurls
I was referred to a Dietician as I was told by my Doctor that I was prediabetic. I got lots information about what I can and cannot eat and told to come back in a months time to see how I'm going. I then saw this book and read it in 2 days and it just made sens! I began to realise that I could do this and it was achievable. I lost 4 kilos in my first week, my vegetable eating expanded and I starting exercising on my treadmill. My husband now follows the new eating plan and we feel so much better for it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking at wanting to lower their glucose readings or just to reduce the damage done by glucose spikes.Deb

I was raised eating everything. It was all good for you. Everything. But, the quality of what we now grow on the earth is not equivalent to what was harvested in biblical times. Processed food is killing us. Thankfully, my doctor turned me on to this book. Now I, who laughed at 'veganism' finds himself thinking about what happens in our bodies when certain things are put in. I can't put this book down. Even the introduction is compelling enough to make a meat lover take a second look.
