1. Law 101: Everything You Need To Know About American Law [Book]

Product Details:
In this fifth edition of his bestselling classic, jay feinman provides an authoritative and up-to-date overview of the american legal system. in the years since the publication of the fourth edition, there have been many important developments on the legal front. the supreme court has issued important decisions on presidential powers, freedom of religion, and personal liberty. police shootings and the rise of black lives matter has impacted the court system too. the rise of arbitration at the expense of jury trials has affected the rights of consumers, and internet law remains in a state of constant change. this fully updated fifth edition of law 101 accounts for all these developments and more, as feinman once again provides a clear introduction to american law. the book covers all the main subjects taught in the first year of law school, and discusses every facet of the american legal tradition, including constitutional law, the litigation process, and criminal, property, and contracts law. to illustrate how the legal system works, feinman draws from noteworthy, infamous, and even outrageous examples and cases. madison that gave the supreme court the power to declare state and federal law unconstitutional. a key to learning about the law is understanding legal vocabulary, and feinman helps by clarifying terms like "due process" and "equal protection," as well as by drawing distinctions between terms like "murder" and "manslaughter." above all, feinman reveals to readers of all kinds that despite its complexities and quirks, the law can be understood by everyone. perfect for students contemplating law school, journalists covering legislature, or even casual fans of "court-television" shows, law 101 is a clear and accessible introduction to the american legal system.

2. The Color Of Law: A Forgotten History Of How Our Government Segregated America [Book]

Product Details:
New york times bestseller – notable book of the year – editors' choice selectionone of bill gates’ “amazing books” of the yearlonglisted for the national book awardthis “powerful and disturbing history” exposes how american governments deliberately imposed racial segregation on metropolitan areas nationwide (new york times book review). widely heralded as a “masterful” (washington post) and “essential” (slate) history of the modern american metropolis, richard rothstein’s the color of law offers “the most forceful argument ever published on how federal, state, and local governments gave rise to and reinforced neighborhood segregation” (william julius wilson). exploding the myth of de facto segregation arising from private prejudice or the unintended consequences of economic forces, rothstein describes how the american government systematically imposed residential segregation: with undisguised racial zoning; public housing that purposefully segregated previously mixed communities; subsidies for builders to create whites-only suburbs; tax exemptions for institutions that enforced segregation; and support for violent resistance to african americans in white neighborhoods. a groundbreaking, “virtually indispensable” study that has already transformed our understanding of twentieth-century urban history (chicago daily observer), the color of law forces us to face the obligation to remedy our unconstitutional past.
Reviews:
TCOL is a fascinating study of how departmental regulations created the segregation in cities and suburbs that have turned into tax-poor neighborhoods, justification for "white flight", and a glass ceiling for African-Americans where there should have/could have been opportunity. It researches the history–documented in the directives and regulations themselves–of specific intentions to deny access to loans, properties, educational opportunities, and job offerings to those who didn't fit the "desired qualities". While it may seem strange that segregation was, in many instances, created in places where it had not previously existed, this book explores how that happened with governmental consent and support over a period of generations in spite of the legislation designed specifically to protect civil rights, racial equality, and equal opportunity. The book is an easy read instead of a collection of facts, diagrams, statistics, and quotations.A.
This is a great book. It's the details to the wrong doings that we all know existed and still exists today. It should be a requirement to read.OddThatsMe
The author provides detailed historical account of overtly and covertly practiced racial biases in the housing market. Future social policy experts and politicians whose platforms focus on fair and affordable housing would do well to use this book as an easy source of reference into past practices that have and continue to hinder the socio-economic classes of non-white individualsolympistripli0

Reviews:
While Connelly is capable of storytelling, its consistently unfortunate that he (along with other addled leftists) transmits his anti-America (and American), anti-Christian, politically correct venom thru his characters. It's chickensh*t – and small. I'd forgotten what a bad taste this writer leaves.sagecoach12
Hard to put down. Stretches reality a bit but very entertaining. Connelly's Lincoln Lawyer is such a likeable character. Watching him deal with the often bizarre twists and turns in his life and relationships makes dealing with our own less daunting.nos968
I almost didn't buy this book because I did not care for the personality of Mickey Haller in previous stories. But I'm so glad I did, as this is the best in the series so far. Mickey is arrested for a murder he did not commit, and it takes all his resources to prove his innocence. Rather than spend all his money to pay the bail, he goes to jail and works his case from there. It's an interesting concept and works as a great story line.Sheryl
8. The Bramble Bush: The Classic Lectures On The Law And Law School [Book]

Product Details:
For over seventy years, there has been one book that law students have read to prepare for what they were about to encounter. that book is the bramble bush. after all these years and many imitators, the bramble bush remains one of the most popular introductions to the law and its study.llewellyn introduces students to what the law is, how to read cases, how to prepare for class, and how justice in the real world relates to the law. although laws change every year, disputes between people haven't altered all that much since llewellyn first penned the bramble bush, and the process of moving from private dispute to legal conflict still follows the patterns he described.moreover, the steps of a legal dispute, from arguments to verdict, to opinion, to review, to appeal, to opinion have changed little in their significance or their substance. cases are still the best tools for exploring the interaction of the law with individual questions, and the essence of what law students must learn to do has persisted. if anything, many of the points llewellyn argued in these lectures were on the dawning horizon then but are in their mid-day fullness now.

Reviews:
We bought the whole series- money, economics, business, politics, law and philosophy. Very pleased to own them. Excellent presentation of Information and graphics, as you would expect from Usborne. Well-pitched for 8-12 year olds. Politics focuses on USA in one chapter and not on Australia, but that chapter lead to discussions about how Australia is different. Every school should have a complete set of this series. We chose to buy them for home too because with elections and budgets and taxes and cryptocurrencies and illegal war invasions of other countries happening in the news they (the series) have helped us explain how such decisions evolve to our primary school son. The law book is US focused. Again, like the politics one, the US focus was a stepping stone to discussions about how and why Australia differs in some aspects and not in others. The law one also explains international law, UN council, sanctions, ICC, peoples rights, discrimination law and very importantly, how to build an argument.Mum of a keen-reader son
15. Reading Law: The Interpretation Of Legal Texts [Book]

Product Details:
In this groundbreaking book, scalia and garner systematically explain all the most important principles of constitutional, statutory, and contractual interpretation in an engaging and informative style with hundreds of illustrations from actual cases. is a burrito a sandwich? is a corporation entitled to personal privacy? if you trade a gun for drugs, are you using a gun in a drug transaction? the authors grapple with these and dozens of equally curious questions while explaining the most principled, lucid, and reliable techniques for deriving meaning from authoritative texts. meanwhile, the book takes up some of the most controversial issues in modern jurisprudence. what, exactly, is textualism? why is strict construction a bad thing? what is the true doctrine of originalism? and which is more important: the spirit of the law, or the letter? the authors write with a well-argued point of view that is definitive yet nuanced, straightforward yet sophisticated.
Reviews:
THIS is exactly the kind of book I have been wanting as a desk reference. I work in real estate and am often challenged by legal issues. Knowing how to understand law is vital and while I'm not a lawyer, this book is a great way to learn how to talk to lawyers when the need arises. Also, I'm highly interested in politics and legislation for housing and other fields. I read for hours a day, online and off, so having access to one of the greatest legal minds in our history with this book is exactly what I was hoping to find. I much prefer hardback books and the price drop was the final factor in my decision to purchase. Thanks.cathtitchena-0

18. The Legal Analyst: A Toolkit For Thinking About The Law [Book]

Product Details:
There are two kinds of knowledge law school teaches: legal rules on the one hand, and tools for thinking about legal problems on the other. although the tools are far more interesting and useful than the rules, they tend to be neglected in favor of other aspects of the curriculum. from classic ideas in game theory such as the “prisoner’s dilemma” and the “stag hunt” to psychological principles such as hindsight bias and framing effects, from ideas in jurisprudence such as the slippery slope to more than two dozen other such principles, farnsworth’s guide leads readers through the fascinating world of legal thought. each chapter introduces a single tool and shows how it can be used to solve different types of problems. the explanations are written in clear, lively language and illustrated with a wide range of examples. the legal analyst is an indispensable user’s manual for law students, experienced practitioners seeking a one-stop guide to legal principles, or anyone else with an interest in the law.

Start of a informative read. Very detailed and helpful information. I purchased the product because I am interested in attending law school. This is a very thick book, but I guess it wouldn't serve it's purpose if all the information wasn't included.businessoffaith
