Arrived quickly, condition as advertised Book content; excellent, not a shallow self-help book. Practical content, and insightful analysis (which is why it remains a classic).TW E.
I bought this for my boss as he is moving onto a new job. I first came across this book when working for a different boss who had it on his bookshelf. I flicked through it, but found it a bit over my head (I'm a secretary), but ideal for managers climbing the ladder. The manager who owned this has been promoted twice in the last 4 years and is now at director level. My current boss thinks the book will really help him in his new role. It's a bit 'management speak' for me, but ideal for managers in corporate companies.sueb8831

6. What Management Is: How It Works And Why It's Everyone's Business [Book]

Product Details:
A beginner's guide and a bible for one of the greatest social innovations of modern times: the discipline of management.whether you’re new to the field or a seasoned executive, this book will give you a firm grasp on what it takes to make an organization perform. it presents the basic principles of management simply, but not simplistically. why do you need both a business model and a strategy? why is it impossible to manage without the right performance measures, and do yours pass the test? what management is is both a beginner’s guide and a bible for one of the greatest social innovations of modern times: the discipline of management. joan magretta, a former top editor at the harvard business review, distills the wisdom of a bewildering sea of books and articles into one simple, clear volume, explaining both the logic of successful organizations and how that logic is embodied in practice. magretta makes rich use of examples— contemporary and historical—to bring to life management’s high concepts: value creation, business models, competitive strategy, and organizational design. she devotes equal attention to the often unwritten rules of execution that characterize the best-performing organizations. throughout she shows how the principles of management that work in for-profit businesses can—and must—be applied to nonprofits as well. most management books preach a single formula or a single fad. this one roams knowledgeably over the best that has been thought and written with a practical eye for what matters in real organizations. not since peter drucker’s great work of the 1950s and 1960s has there been a comparable effort to present the work of management as a coherent whole, to take stock of the current state of play, and to write about it thoughtfully for readers of all backgrounds. newcomers will find the basics demystified. more experienced readers will recognize a store of useful wisdom and a framework for improving their own performance. this is the big-picture management book for our times.

11. Think Again: The Power Of Knowing What You Don't Know [Book]

Product Details:
#1 new york times bestseller “this. this is the right book for right now. yes, learning requires focus. but, unlearning and relearning requires much more—it requires choosing courage over comfort. i’ve never felt so hopeful about what i don’t know.”—brené brown, ph. – d., #1 new york times bestselling author of dare to lead – the bestselling author of give and take and originals examines the critical art of rethinking: learning to question your opinions and open other people's minds, which can position you for excellence at work and wisdom in life – intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. in our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. the result is that our beliefs get brittle long before our bones. – organizational psychologist adam grant is an expert on opening other people's minds–and our own. as wharton's top-rated professor and the bestselling author of originals and give and take, he makes it one of his guiding principles to argue like he's right but listen like he's wrong. you'll learn how an international debate champion wins arguments, a black musician persuades white supremacists to abandon hate, a vaccine whisperer convinces concerned parents to immunize their children, and adam has coaxed yankees fans to root for the red sox. it's an invitation to let go of views that are no longer serving us well and prize mental flexibility over foolish consistency.
Reviews:
This book is a must read. I got one for each of my kids and several people I work with. Learning the skills of rethinking is something everyone should do.Kim G
If you're struggling with mediocre team performance or wondering how to equip your child for the ever-changing world, rush out and grab this book. "The power of knowing what you don't know", is an apt summary of the contents. I have not encountered a book on an abstract topic that is such a captivating read. The author strides through the different types of thinking in various contexts, such as individual, interpersonal, and collective thinking. He effectively guides the reader to consider the possibility of "thinking about how we think". By removing impulsive responses, rethinking our position then considering alternative views, and, when appropriate, refining our perspective will improve outcomes and enhance relationships. The adoption of various approaches to interactions, such as a preacher or prosecutor mode, is likely to alienate our position, however adopting a curious and scientific approach to proposals from others will increase collaboration and the prospects of consensus. Adam Grant underscores this standpoint with constructive observations on the remarkable success of teams, with individuals who are comfortable with a high degree of divergence in opinion. They have an ability to gain unanimity by a scientific approach of questioning, considering all proposed alternatives then agreeing on the optimal solutions. This contrasts with current norms where teams often have a dominant individual whose ideas are adopted as the group falls in line, ceding to position power. The ability to fully utilise a diversity of knowledge and opinion is exceptionally powerful. For parents, Adam Grant has exciting insights on education highlighting the advantages of delivering an environment filled with continuous review and improvement processes. The mundane delivery of facts via lectures is removed with future generations collaborating and reviewing ideas within a team setting. The focus on process rather than the individual will serve them and society far more effectively. Rethinking how we interact has the power to open up paths that accumulate, distil and distribute the collective greatness of individuals and teams and offers a viable alternative to the extreme polarization of the modern world. In the must-read category – a few times and then share with those around you!CCH
This book is a must read to help the journey of truely understanding our own mind…very much needed in these times.Shona

Reviews:
For years I felt my organizational habits and routines were a mild case of obsessive compulsive behavior. Although the same habits directly contributed to my profe success, I tried to hide them. This book explains clearly how important those habits and routines are in all areas. I am very glad I read it. Highly recommend!cidinv
I mainly give this book 4 stars because of how it engaged me in the tales of certain companies and studies. I feel it falls a little short in giving detailed advice to change habits.PATRICK
This was a great book, hard to put down. It explains how we do so much of what we do. I even bought another copy to give my son. It wasn't my intention when I started reading, but now I am using the ideas to work on not being so much of a workaholic.gunny-sloan

Reviews:
Once I was given a job to manage an unruly and large Methadone Clinic. After the honeymoon of a couple of weeks, things got quickly difficult. I stumbled across this book at a used bookstore. It was a blessing. Even though he wrote from the perspective of manufactoring, I was able to translate his concise approach into a socialwork setting inspite of not having any formal training in management. Soon, whenever confronted by a difficulty, I would get out the book and read the relevant chapter for his logical approach. Looking back, I know my success was from using this book. This book gives very good data, and with some contemplation, you will be able to conquer a management position if it is humanly possible. I ended up lasting 2 years before giving it up, BUT, the work I did successfully stablized the clinic and I was acknowledged for my good work by all. Others before and after me couldn't even come close to my work or my endurance(one called the job his mental breakdown, one person was place in a mental ward-really!) The job was finally divided into two jobs and the pay was multiplied 5x's mine! For me, this book was outstanding.lmhommel
I like the way this book is written and the way concepts (like managerial leverage) are presented. I have recommended this book to several people and they all felt they learned something by reading it.EPDad
