3. 25 Notes For The Successful Musician: The Ultimate Guide To Making It In The Music Industry [Book]

Product Details:
When i thought about writing a book about being a working musician, a few things went through my mind. who am i to write a book on this subject? am i really an expert on this? i spoke with more and more people who have known me for a long time and know my history. they all gave me a resounding, "yes! you are in the business and have seen all areas of the business, go for it!" in my travels all around the world, many aspiring artists and musicians have asked me questions about touring. many of the questions are similar, but some really stand out. nevertheless, i've always made notes on what questions were asked. when i started writing this book, i quickly realized i was writing more than just a book on touring. it is a guide for the music business and solid musicianship in general. this is for the working musician who may play on the weekends for a hobby, but aspires to do more. some "notes" may be fairly basic. others are for the advanced musician, who has already moved to nashville, l.a., or new york. everything in this collection is for any musician (or music lover) looking for secrets and tips about being on the road and beyond. this book is a personal account of this business from my humble opinion and experiences. some may agree on certain points and some certainly will not. often, there are no clear-cut guidelines in this business. the following notes are some of mine. enjoy your read and leverage my experiences (and mistakes) to help you on your musical journey. i hope it helps you become successful in whatever aspect of the business you pursue. don't let anyone stop you… go for it!

5. From Cradle To Stage: My Son The Rock Star And The Remarkable Stories From The Mothers Who Rocked And Raised Music's Greatest [Book]

Product Details:
From cradle to stage shares stories and exclusive photos featuring mothers of rock icons, the icons themselves, and their behind the music-style relationships while the grohl family had always been musical-the family sang together on long car trips, harmonizing to motown and david bowie, virginia grohl never expected her son to become a musician, let alone a rock star. but when she saw him perform in front of thousands of screaming fans for the first time, she knew that stardom was meant to be for her son. and as virginia watched her son's star rise, she often wondered about the other mothers who raised children who became rock stars. were they as surprised as she was about their children's fame? did they worry about their children's livelihood and well-being in an industry fraught with drugs and other dangers? did they encourage their children's passions despite the odds against success, or attempt to dissuade them from their grandiose dreams? do they remind their kids to pack a warm coat when they go on tour? virginia decided to seek out other celebrity mothers to ask these questions, and so began a two-year odyssey in which she interviewed such women as verna griffin, dr. dre's mother; marianne stipe, michael stipe of rem's mother; janis winehouse, amy winehouse's mother; patsy noah, adam levine's mother; donna haim, mother of the haim sisters; hester diamond, mike d of the beastie boys' mother. with exclusive family photographs and a foreword by dave grohl, from cradle to stage will appeal to mothers and music fans everywhere.

Reviews:
What an amazing and inspirational relationship Virginia has with Dave. Love the story behind the book. A must read for any Dave Grohl fan or someone who is inspired by great Mums or great teachers.Sadie
I'll preface this by saying I'm a Dave Grohl fan. As a teenager in the early 90s Nirvana's screams of rebellion struck a chord with a young impressionable me and locked in, my rough musical tastes for life. I'm also a music trivia nut and love hearing all the back stories behind some of musics biggest events. This isn't just a book for Foo Fighters fans. Or Rock fans. This is a book for Fan's, for musicians, And musicians mothers. Virginia Grohl is clearly a very well educated woman. A Teacher, A music lover and loving mother. This isn't written from a journalistic point of view, nor a biographical one. It's her pet project after standing backstage at a multi act festival and asking herself "Where are all the other mothers-" Even though it's written from an interviewers point of view. Mama Foo does a fantastic job of transporting the reader everywhere from Southern America in the 70s As Micheal Stipe's millitary parents deal with the red army's refusal to agree with American peace talks, To the New York Bronx As Dr. Dre's Mother tries to protect her young family from gang violence. Grohl weaves these tails from rockstar parents into her own memories of Dave's childhood with ease. My only real criticism is the book itself is difficult to read. Virginia has a firm grasp of the english language. And she doesn't shy away from using it. I consider myself a fairly intelligent person, And can normally browse over any text from english prose to medical journals with ease. And as much as this book is hard to put down once started. It's also hard to read with a complete comprehension of exactly what all the expressive words she uses mean. I found this aspect tiring at times. And it made complete submersion into "the world" Virginia creates difficult. I wouldn't for example recommend this book for say, a 14 year old music fan, As I can imagine the frustration at struggling to comprehend parts of it, And being unable to immerse myself fully into it. However. If you are a genuine music fan or historian, or just a huge fan of a couple of the act's whose mother's are interviewed here. It's really compelling reading. Think of it as a compilation of a slew of great Rolling Stone interviews with Rockstar Moms and you will have a genuine feel for what this book is like.Dave
A great read for anyone who loves Dave Grohl. His mother spoke to the mothers of other famous rock stars, to see if their experience jibed with hers.goralyna123

One of spin's best music memoirs of 2022! brian johnson's memoir from growing up in a small town to starting his own band to ultimately replacing bon scott, the lead singer of one of the world biggest rock acts, ac/dc. they would record their first album together, the iconic back in black, which would become the biggest selling rock album of all time.brian johnson was born to a steelworker and wwii veteran father and an italian mother, growing up in new castle upon tyne, england, a working-class town. he was musically inclined and sang with the church choir. by the early '70s he performed with the glam rock band geordie, and they had a couple hits, but it was tough going. so tough that by 1976, they disbanded and brian turned to a blue-collar life.then 1980 changed everything. bon scott, the lead singer and lyricist of the australian rock band ac/dc died at 33. the band auditioned singers, among them johnson, whom scott himself had seen perform and raved about. within days, johnson was in a studio with the band, working with founding members angus and malcolm young, cliff williams, and phil rudd, along with producer mutt lange.when the album, back in black, was released in july–a mere three months after johnson had joined the band–it exploded, going on to sell 50 million copies worldwide, and triggering a years-long worldwide tour. it has been declared "the biggest selling hard rock album ever made" and "the best-selling heavy-metal album in history." the band toured the world for a full year to support the album, changing the face of rock music–and brian johnson's life–forever.

#1 new york times bestseller, named by the times as one of "6 books to help understand trump's win" and soon to be a major-motion picture directed by ron howard "you will not read a more important book about america this year."—the economist "a riveting book."—the wall street journal"essential reading."—david brooks, new york timeshillbilly elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class americans. the disintegration of this group, a process that has been slowly occurring now for more than forty years, has been reported with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.the vance family story begins hopefully in postwar america. d.’s grandparents were “dirt poor and in love,” and moved north from kentucky’s appalachia region to ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. they raised a middle-class family, and eventually one of their grandchildren would graduate from yale law school, a conventional marker of success in achieving generational upward mobility. with piercing honesty, vance shows how he himself still carries around the demons of his chaotic family history.a deeply moving memoir, with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, hillbilly elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. and it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the american dream for a large segment of this country.
Reviews:
In all areas of the USA there are "hillbilly" people even if they don't go by that title. Ignorance is not limited to the southern part of our nation, nor is drug use, illegitimate children or low income jobs. We all have issues of some kind no matter where we live. Yes, he pulled himself up by his boot straps to make something of himself, but there are people like that all over the country.spo5158-6fasuqitzw
This movie, hands down, is the best movie I have seen yet! This movie really can make you feel what it’s like to have a loved one succumbed in addiction, or even show you how another views you in addiction. I am a recovering addict, I have never had something touch me and show me the reasons I stayed sober, furthermore I could see how I truly acted towards others. This movie is truly an inspiration!!!!!katlin.w
This is an excellent memoir of life in a disadvantaged community in rust-belt USA and how the author escapes from it and climbs the social ladder to achieve a successful career. However, whilst he achieved the American dream most people in the community did not and they still live in poverty surrounded by unemployment and drugs. The book sheds some light on why many people became disillusioned with the Washington elites and voted for Donald Trump in 2016. Whether he can solve their problems is a question unanswered.John
15. Broken Horses: A Memoir [Book]

Product Details:
#1 new york times bestseller – the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, producer, and six-time grammy winner opens up about faith, sexuality, parenthood, and a life shaped by music in “one of the great memoirs of our time” (glennon doyle, author of untamed). named one of the best books of the year by npr and autostraddle – “the best-written, most engaging rock autobiography since her childhood hero, elton john, published me.”—varietybrandi carlile was born into a musically gifted, impoverished family on the outskirts of seattle and grew up in a constant state of change, moving from house to house, trailer to trailer, fourteen times in as many years. though imperfect in every way, her dysfunctional childhood was as beautiful as it was strange, and as nurturing as it was difficult. at the age of five, brandi contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life, leaving an indelible mark on her formative years and altering her journey into young adulthood.as an openly gay teenager, brandi grappled with the tension between her sexuality and her faith when her pastor publicly refused to baptize her on the day of the ceremony. shockingly, her small town rallied around brandi in support and set her on a path to salvation where the rest of the misfits and rejects find it: through twisted, joyful, weird, and wonderful music. in broken horses, brandi carlile takes readers through the events of her life that shaped her very raw art—from her start at a local singing competition where she performed elton john’s “honky cat” in a bedazzled white polyester suit, to her first break opening for dave matthews band, to many sleepless tours over fifteen years and six studio albums, all while raising two children with her wife, catherine shepherd. this hard-won success led her to collaborations with personal heroes like elton john, dolly parton, mavis staples, pearl jam, tanya tucker, and joni mitchell, as well as her peers in the supergroup the highwomen, and ultimately to the grammy stage, where she converted millions of viewers into instant fans.evocative and piercingly honest, broken horses is at once an examination of faith through the eyes of a person rejected by the church’s basic tenets and a meditation on the moments and lyrics that have shaped the life of a creative mind, a brilliant artist, and a genuine empath on a mission to give back.

17. Life – Audiobook By Keith Richards

Product Details:
Many fans of rolling stones guitarist keith richards wonder how he's managed to survive the last half-century of raucous rock and roll behavior and drug use. this suspicion is only intensified after reading life, his 2011 autobiography. richards has always been just who he is, leaving the facades for others and choosing instead to just be himself. his open honestly is evident in life, when he discusses not only the tunes made famous by his legendary band but the men behind them. keith writes about his past addictions at length, and the isolation both his drug use and the band's fame brought. the book even includes many pictures from keith's personal collection. these are available as a pdf download with the audiobook version on life. richards talks about the early days of the rolling stones, when the band did a lot more listening than playing. he, along with vocalist mick jagger and fellow guitarist brian jones, would sit for hours dissecting and digesting records by chuck berry and muddy waters. from there, they developed their own sound, and formed a band to play the music the y loved. jagger and richards soon found they worked well together as a songwriting team, and the rolling stones were born. he offers a look at their rise to fame and all of the events of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s that contributed to their legendary status. richards wrote life with help from journalist james fox. fox is best known for his book about an infamous 1941 murder in kenya called white mischief. his other works include five sisters: the langhornes of virginia. he has also worked as a reporter for london's sunday times. the life audiobook is narrated by johnny depp and joe hurley.

Reviews:
Well written with entries by real-life characters. Insider look at the music industry without being over-the-top critical. Life as it was in the 60s era. Richards is a compelling person with both foibles and incredible talent. A natural talent with human failings and gifts. What a guy!zebrastarlight
I read this book 3 times whenever I felt the need to have a good laugh and put my own life into perspective. Keith has a lot to say and a very sophisticated way of saying it. Little stories abound about life with the Stones and life with Keith and his numerous girlfriends. The book even includes some guitar tricks and lessons. I thoroughly enjoyed it with his relating his living-on-the-edge life style. And yet with all his hours of being intoxicated he wrote a huge body of fantastic tunes. A lot like Jim Morrison whos incredibly beautiful body of work apparently was written while drunk or high. Read this book. The opening gets you immediately into it with an hysterically funny story of Keith and Ronnie in The Midwest Bible Belt , holed up in a diner , getting blasted in the bathroom, and then emerging in full Stones attire and punk hair dos , arousing the curiosity of the god fearing diners, who called the police. Youd never expect Keith could write so well. Eric Claptons autobiography written a while back was full of English grammar mistakes. Keith apparently is no slouch when it comes to the Kings English. Well written and a fun read.phazyme
As rock star biographies go, this one is excellent. It's well written, flows nicely and is peppered with many anecdotes. There is also in depth musings of how Keith writes and plays the many types of guitar he owns, and how he developed his techniques. It's not often you get this sort of solid detail, riveting if you're a player yourself. Studio tech is very interesting. There's a good set of b/w photographs included. This is a really good window into our Keef's career. A thick book that you'll read to the end.jillrobert0
