5. Peruvian Traditions [Book]

Product Details:
Peruvian author ricardo palma (1838-1919) was one of the most popular and imitated writers in latin america during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. as head of the national library in lima, palma had access to a rich source of historical books and manuscripts. his historical miscellanies, which he called "traditions," are witty anecdotes about conquerors, viceroys, corrupt and lovelorn friars, tragic loves and notorious characters. humor, irony and word play characterize his collection of over five hundred traditions written between 1872 and 1906, whether describing violent deeds or amorous misadventures. unlike many of his contemporaries in the second half of the nineteenth century, palma did not write transparent didactic fictions and defend elite cultural forms. rather, he reveled in ironic approaches to written sources, political authorities and church institutions as well as popular speech and knowledge. both fiction and history, palma's delightful peruviantraditions represents a hybrid literary form that constructs historical memory distinct from the dominant literary trends of the time.

6. Lost Ancient Technology Of Peru And Bolivia [Book]

Product Details:
Peru and bolivia have become very popular tourist destinations because, mainly, of the amazing stone remains left behind by cultures such as the inca. machu picchu is the number one popular site for travelers to south america, yet how many of these visitors realize that many of the famous, and less known megalithic sites are much older than cultures such as the inca and thus were not made by them! in this book, brien foerster shows you that places such as cusco, puma punku, tiwanaku and even machu picchu were initially constructed thousands of years before the inca or other famous people existed. mounting scientific evidence shows that prior to the end of the ice age, 12,000 years ago, very advanced cultures existed in peru and bolivia, and had advanced high technology.

Brilliant read. Truth is being discussed and resolvedqlfanquantumleap
A great book and very interesting, but the only thing is that it could have been made a bit smaller in size.popow.ad.omtuhwe
Probably the best part of this book is the cover. The pages are A4 in size with extremely large type to make it appear to have more pages. It is full of spelling errors and personal opinion. I prefer my books to provide some proof of their theories rather than rely on the ramblings of the author. The photos are interesting but are all black and white.Clay
7. Peru: Photographs [Book]

Product Details:
The weathered faces and dusty roads of peru, compiled and sequenced by the master of the american photo-essayin march 1949, robert frank mailed a birthday gift to his mother in switzerland: a maquette of a series of photographs he had made during a visit to peru between june and december of the previous year. frank assembled an identical book for himself, and these two maquettes now reside in the collections of the museum of modern art, new york and the national gallery of art, washington. a few of the images are well known in frank's oeuvre, but until now very few people have seen the entire series–which, in 1949, already displayed the hallmark of frank's distinctive image-sequencing. peru also exhibits an ease and flexibility that frank himself confirms: i was very free with the camera. i didn't think of what would be the correct thing to do; i did what i felt good doing. i was like an action painter. using a hand-held 35mm leica camera, frank documented the country's massive vistas, weathered faces, manual labor and dusty roads stretching to the horizon with a spontaneity of motion that propels the viewer into the midst of the scenery. for the first time, and under the direction of frank himself, this book presents the complete sequence of images. peru is a work of major significance in both the artist's history and the history of photography. published in association with the national gallery of art, washington.

10. The Peru Reader: History, Culture, Politics [Book]

Product Details:
Sixteenth-century spanish soldiers described peru as a land filled with gold and silver, a place of untold wealth. nineteenth-century travelers wrote of soaring andean peaks plunging into luxuriant amazonian canyons of orchids, pythons, and jaguars. the early-twentieth-century american adventurer hiram bingham told of the raging rivers and the wild jungles he traversed on his way to rediscovering the “lost city of the incas,” machu picchu. seventy years later, news crews from abc and cbs traveled to peru to report on merciless terrorists, starving peasants, and colombian drug runners in the “white gold” rush of the coca trade. as often as not, peru has been portrayed in broad extremes: as the land of the richest treasures, the bloodiest conquest, the most poignant ballads, and the most violent revolutionaries. this revised and updated second edition of the bestselling peru reader offers a deeper understanding of the complex country that lies behind these claims.unparalleled in scope, the volume covers peru’s history from its extraordinary pre-columbian civilizations to its citizens’ twenty-first-century struggles to achieve dignity and justice in a multicultural nation where andean, african, amazonian, asian, and european traditions meet. the collection presents a vast array of essays, folklore, historical documents, poetry, songs, short stories, autobiographical accounts, and photographs. works by contemporary peruvian intellectuals and politicians appear alongside accounts of those whose voices are less often heard—peasants, street vendors, maids, amazonian indians, and african-peruvians. including some of the most insightful pieces of western journalism and scholarship about peru, the selections provide the traveler and specialist alike with a thorough introduction to the country’s astonishing past and challenging present.

12. An Inca Account Of The Conquest Of Peru [Book]

Product Details:
Available in english for the first time, an inca account of the conquest of peru is a firsthand account of the spanish invasion, narrated in 1570 by diego de castro titu cusi yupanqui – the penultimate ruler of the inca dynasty – to a spanish missionary and transcribed by a mestizo assistant. the resulting hybrid document offers an inca perspective on the spanish conquest of peru, filtered through the monk and his scribe. titu cusi tells of his father's maltreatment at the hands of the conquerors; his father's ensuing military campaigns, withdrawal, and murder; and his own succession as ruler. although he continued to resist spanish attempts at "pacification," titu cusi entertained spanish missionaries, converted to christianity, and then, most importantly, narrated his story of the conquest to enlighten emperor phillip ii about the behavior of the emperor's subjects in peru. this vivid narrative illuminates the incan view of the spanish invaders and offers an important account of indigenous resistance, accommodation, change, and survival in the face of the european conquest. informed by literary, historical, and anthropological scholarship, bauer's introduction points out the hybrid elements of titu cusi's account, revealing how it merges native andean and spanish rhetorical and cultural practices. supported in part by the colorado endowment for the humanities.
Reviews:
This Inca account of the Peruvian conquest is a must-have for anyone who, like me, has a penchant for Inca history. The text has been through translation processes – from Cuzco Quechua through Spanish to English, but it still reads well, if a little repetitive in places. The foreword is longer than the account itself, but it all makes for interesting reading. Sapa Inca Titu Cusi Yupanqui has given a poignant account of the plight of the Inca people, their astonishing bravery and the war they waged against so many odds.stanslorcian
