1. You Can't Always Get What You Want: My Life With The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead And Other Wonderful Reprobates [Book]
Product Details:
A "straight-dope, tell-all account" of touring with two of the world's greatest bands of the 60s and 70s — a "fast-moving narrative of rock-n-roll excess." (publishers weekly) sam draws intimate portraits of other stars of the psychedelic circus that was the music industry in the sixties and seventies, including janis joplin, jimi hendrix, the band, the allman brothers, pink floyd, and eric clapton in this all-access memoir of the psychedelic era, sam cutler recounts his life as a tour manager for the rolling stones and the grateful dead — whom he calls the yin and yang of bands. after working with the rolling stones at their historic hyde park concert in 1969, sam managed their american tour later that year, when he famously dubbed them "the greatest rock band in the world." and he was caught in the middle as their triumph took a tragic turn during a free concert at the altamont speedway in california, where a man in the crowd was killed by the hell's angels.after that, sam took up with the fun-loving grateful dead, managing their tours and finances, and taking part in their endless hijinks on the road. with intimate portraits of other stars of the time — including janis joplin, jimi hendrix, the band, the allman brothers, pink floyd, and eric clapton — this memoir is a treasure trove of insights and anecdotes that bring some of rock's greatest legends to life.

2. The Wrecking Crew: The Inside Story Of Rock And Roll's Best-Kept Secret [Book]
Product Details:
Winner of the oregon book award for general nonfiction and los angeles times bestseller"it makes good music sound better."-janet maslin in the new york times"a fascinating look into the west coast recording studio scene of the '60s and the inside story of the music you heard on the radio. if you always assumed the musicians you listened to were the same people you saw onstage, you are in for a big surprise!"-dusty street, host of classic vinyl on sirius xm satellite radioif you were a fan of popular music in the 1960s and early '70s, you were a fan of the wrecking crew-whether you knew it or not.on hit record after hit record by everyone from the byrds, the beach boys, and the monkees to the grass roots, the 5th dimension, sonny & cher, and simon & garfunkel, this collection of west coast studio musicians from diverse backgrounds established themselves in los angeles, california as the driving sound of pop music-sometimes over the objection of actual band members forced to make way for wrecking crew members. industry insider kent hartman tells the dramatic, definitive story of the musicians who forged a reputation throughout the business as the secret weapons behind the top recording stars.mining invaluable interviews, the author follows the careers of such session masters as drummer hal blaine and keyboardist larry knechtel, as well as trailblazing bassist carol kaye-the only female in the bunch-who went on to play in thousands of recording sessions in this rock history. readers will discover the wrecking crew members who would forge careers in their own right, including glen campbell and leon russell, and learn of the relationship between the crew and such legends as phil spector and jimmy webb. hartman also takes us inside the studio for the legendary sessions that gave us pet sounds, bridge over troubled water, and the rock classic "layla," which wrecking crew drummer jim gordon cowrote with eric clapton for derek and the dominos. and the author recounts priceless scenes such as mike nesmith of the monkees facing off with studio head don kirshner, grass roots lead guitarist (and future star of the office) creed bratton getting fired from the group, and michel rubini unseating frank sinatra's pianist for the session in which the iconic singer improvised the hit-making ending to "strangers in the night." the wrecking crew tells the collective, behind-the-scenes stories of the artists who dominated top 40 radio during the most exciting time in american popular culture.
Reviews:
AWESOME insight into why most of us enjoy classic instrumentation in memorable songs of the sixties. this studio session effort can not be captured in live shows. More revealing than disappointing that our favorite singers / groups weren't as great as we thought they were. Great explanation in revealing the guys behind the curtain during recordings. Enjoyed it immensely MOEtomcat_seeker
awesome reading material. so cool that these guys, and lady, were the sound of the times, playing for so many groups, unbeknownst to the adoring public. wish we knew then what we know now!robertteufeljr

8. Inside Out: A Personal History Of Pink Floyd (Reading Edition): (Rock And Roll Book, Biography Of Pink Floyd, Music Book) [Book]
Product Details:
"the definitive history of pink floyd, one of the world's great bands, by founder member nick mason. one of the most fascinating rock bands ever, pink floyd was formed in 1965. after a year in the london 'underground' experimenting with revolutionary techniques such as lights that matched their music, they released their first single in 1966. their breakthrough album, the dark side of the moon, was released in 1973 and stayed in the charts until 1982, the longest a record has ever been continuously in the charts, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time. in 1975 they released wish you were here, which reached iconic status, then in 1979 the wall went to number 1 in almost every country in the world. the movie version of the wall starring bob geldof was released in 1982, becoming a cult favourite. in the 1980s a rift developed between the band members which culminated in law suits. the book was originally written in 2004, then updated and reissued again in 2017, to accompany the opening of the exhibition 'their mortal remains' at the victoria and albert museum in london."– provided by publisher.
Reviews:
I've read several books on Pink Floyd, and this is by far the best.mojobaseball2009
Bought as present for big pink Floyd fan. They were highly delighted and rang me with high praises of this copy of their fav band.cromwellblue
Simply A+ outstanding, five star rating. Pink Floyd drummer "Smiling" Nick Mason is the only outgoing one of the band reveals the story behind Pink Floyd during their long and great careers. Having owned and read the Beatles Anthology book and the Doors Moonlight Drive-story behind every song, I was curious about the meaning of Pink Floyd songs. Where the Beatles and Doors had simpler songs, I have never tired of Pink Floyd for their use of deeper meaning and darker chords in their songs. It's like classical music where it never fades away as you grow appreciation over the years. The parallels of Pink Floyd is just like the Beatles where keyboardist Rick Wright was the quiet introspective one just like George Harrison. Wright however was very innovative in inventing new frontiers and pushing the limits in creative keyboard and synthizer sounds. In the end, Wright became less of a songwriter to where Harrison grew late in his Beatle career. Some can also read how David Gilmour and Roger Waters can draw parallels to Paul McCartney and John Lennon, who both also developed an ego. Lennon and McCartney's clash was mainly over the hallowed grounds of the Abbey Road recording studio where Yoko Ono seem to have invaded the other Bealtes' personal space during their intimate recording time. Ringo Starr is very much like Mason in that Ringo was always seen either smiling or laughing. Though people poked fun at Ringo, he made Beatle songs fun. Mason was always enthusiastic and provided that energy though some Pink Floyd had what was called dark chords. However like dark lines and shadows in an abstract painting, that's what made Pink Floyd songs always interesting. In this book, we find out how the song Pink Floyd was invented by guitarist Syd Barrett after another band had their same name, the Tea Set. Also though people think of Pink Floyd as a band connected with LSD, only Barrett used it and went schitzophrenic enough to battle depression, become insane and battle diabetes. We see that the other four remaining Pink Floyd members, Mason, Wright, Waters and new member Gilmour wouldn't even accept a drink of water from the people living in the same apartment at Barrett so as not to experiment with LSD. Another thing I enjoyed revealed in the book was the band's friendship with great late guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Also how Pink Floyd came about the songs from their great iconic album Dark Side of the Moon is revealed. There is great philosophy in Dark Side of the Moon such as the lunatic is on the grass. You think it's about the fallen Barrett but we see it's actually about politicians, political rules, and the constant threat of war. It continues, "the lunatic is in the hall…the folded paper holds their folded faces to the floor. And everyday the paperboy brings more(I have heard Waters substitue War in some versions)." The other bizarre concidence is that the song "Shine on you crazy diamond" it was said that Barrett showed up in the studio incoherent, overweight, bald like a man who put on too many years. Of course the great Animals and Wall albums are covered here. We finally learn how the Wall got it's start from a heckling, threatening, and inebriated fan in a Montreal Pink Floyd concert in which Waters got sick of and spit at the fan. We also find out about Water's upbringing in which he was denied of his father growing up. His father was killed in WWII when he was six months old. It's revealed in the song when the Tigers broke free. *****ralphg-baseballbookauthor

10. My Rock 'n' Roll Friend [Book]
Product Details:
In 1983, backstage at the lyceum in london, tracey thorn and lindy morrison first met. tracey's music career was just beginning, while lindy, drummer for the go-betweens, was ten years her senior. they became confidantes, comrades and best friends, a relationship cemented by gossip and feminism, books and gigs and rock 'n' roll love affairs. morrison – a headstrong heroine blazing her way through a male-dominated industry – came to be a kind of mentor to thorn. they shared the joy and the struggle of being women in a band, trying to outwit and face down a chauvinist music media. in my rock 'n' roll friend thorn takes stock of thirty-seven years of friendship, teasing out the details of connection and affection between two women who seem to be either complete opposites or mirror images of each other. this important book asks what people see, who does the looking, and ultimately who writes women out of – and back into – history.
Reviews:
great book exploring the relationship between two female rockstars.noble57lotus
This book surprised me in so many ways. It's so well thought out and written. There are very few books on friendship – they seem an unlikely pairing Tracey Thorn and Lindy Morrison. Both from rock bands but there's an age and personality difference. Yet they share an honesty that shines through here. For Go-Betweens' fans this book provides material you won't find in Robert Forster's 'Grant & I'. It is also quite revealing about the seventies in Brisbane. Gerard Lee's magnificent and long out of print stellar novel of those times 'True Love and How to Get It' is even resurrected from oblivion. So many surprises – it's in my to be read again shelf. Great book. Even inspired a poem: petrie terrace she's news to those who need an education always wear shoes you can run in if you're lucky she'll wash your hair when the cops knock the door down be ready to leapTep
11. Rockers And Rollers: A Full-Throttle Memoir [Book]
Product Details:
By night, brian johnson sings in the biggest rock 'n' roll band on the planet. but by day, ac/dc's frontman drives balls to the wall. when he was a young boy growing up in a working-class english town, brian developed what would become a lifelong passion for cars, trolling junkyards and even pretending to drive the family car. from there, he steamed up the windows of his old mini cooper as a teenager, spent untold time in hygienically challenged tour buses, was chauffeured in leather-trimmed limos, and raced cars to a checkered flag. featuring guest stars cliff williams, malcolm and angus young, and many, many others—even arnold schwarzenegger—rockers and rollers is a tribute to brian's obsession with four wheels. by turns surprising, poignant, funny, and maybe a little bit bawdy, these are the stories of a man who drives as hard as he rocks.
Reviews:
I don't know what kind of books are good reading in England, but this one is different. Don't expect many tales of AC/DC exploits and adventures. This book is pretty much about Brian Johnson's love of cars…lots and lots of cars. There are car guys, and then there is Johnson. Jeez, he lives and breathes cars. Not at all what I was expecting, but there were a few interesting moments. The best line was from a Lotus dealer, when he was telling Johnson what was wrong with Johnson's lotus; "The destrangulation millipod was congratulating the seimhydrosternic anticular"…WHAT?? That is what I am going to tell my freinds what is wrong with my car when I have a problem next time..That's funny, I don't care who ya are! Regardless, if you like reading about other dudes and their lifetime of cars, especially the cars not many people get to learn much about, you may enjoy this book. I don't know why Ikept reading it, but it sort a had my interest here and there. Thank godnenss it has short chapters, he's pretty much all over the place. Like a thought comes to mind, and he just writes about it..He's got an awesome voice, but Brian, please stick to your gig with AC/DC.stevearinos
Ok – this book's content is of questionable value – was really hoping to get more insight into Brian Johnson's life, BUT for the price I find it worth while. Not totally compelling – but interesting at times, I pick it up and put it down with ease.stgem-1839
This book is a page turner! Even if you dont like cars his humor is infectious !! He is a wonderful story teller! I would love to sit and listen to him tell stories from his past , oh and he can sing too! Great book! Ps I hope I used the word cheeky as a compliment !!snel3712
12. Stone Alone: The Story Of A Rock 'n' Roll Band [Book]
Product Details:
"one of the best books ever written about the stones."–rolling stoneduring the height of the rolling stones' success, bill wyman kept a diary, recording the churning chaos of the band's creative evolution, power plays, recording sessions, tours, romances, drug busts, and financial disarray. stone alone is a meticulous, shrewd and humorous look at the complex personalities of the stones and the role they played in the startling cultural revolution of the times.
Reviews:
this biography stone alone tells the amazing true story of sex drugs and rock and roll.it is told by one of the rolling stones himself bill wyman.this book was really interesting and i enjoyed reading it i think that any fan or the rolling stones would like this book.
A book which is more like an expanded diary written by Bill Wyman, admits he was a serial womaniser and tells of his struggles to get paid from management etc. dissapointingly it finishes at the famous hyde park gig, but it's over 600 pages long and a "must" for serious fans of the sixties.davedonnelly0
Stone alone probably gathers no moss on library shelves. In my particular case as a Stones' music fan, it can be stated it's a love story: I've read it twice throughout and keep consulting it every now and then for important information concerning different aspects of that band's (and Wyman's) tumultous history. This book concentrates mainly on the period between the Rolling Stones' foundation in 1962 and the Hyde Park concert in 1969, two days after founder member Brian Jones' death, not to mention Wyman's own life story before fame. Rock journalist Coleman turns Wyman's extensive diary into one of the best documents about the rock music scene of the 1960's; the band's beginnings, concerts, riots, drug busts, financial problems, romantic relationships and many other details are all dissected thoroughly. A must.rflins2005
