1. Story: Style, Structure, Substance, And The Principles Of Screenwriting [Book]

Product Details:
For the first time in book form, robert mckee's story reveals the award-winning methods of the man universally regarded as the world's premier screenwriting teacher. for more than 17 years, robert mckee's students have been taking hollywood's top honors. his story structure seminar is the ultimate class for screenwriters and filmmakers, playing to packed auditoriums across the world and boasting more than 35,000 graduates. with hollywood currently paying record sums for great stories — and audiences clamoring for originality — this book is the weapon you need to win the war on clichés and to get your story from page to screen. unlike other popular approaches to screenwriting, story is about form, not formula. employing examples from more than 100 films, mckee imparts a philosophy that reaches beyond rigid rules to identify the more elusive components that distinguish quality stories from the rest of the pack. beginning with basic definitions (what is a beat? a scene? a scene sequence? an act climax? a film climax?), mckee not only brilliantly unravels the mysteries of standard three-act dramatic structures but also demystifies atypical structures such as two-act, seven-act, and even eight-act films, exposing the limitations of each genre; spotlighting the importance of theme, setting, and atmosphere; and highlighting the importance of character versus characterization. but this book goes well beyond the essential mechanics of screenwriting. from concept through final manuscript, story elevates writing from an intellectual exercise to an emotional one, transforming the craft of screenwriting into an art form by carefully exploring the subtler considerations at work in film, such as the nature of irony and the symbolic power of image systems. packed with examples from such film classics as casablanca and chinatown, mckee expertly dissects classic scenes, guiding us step-by-step as only he can to reveal not only how a scene works but why it works, getting beyond the fundamentals of composition to the enduring values and conflicts that separate the classics from the clichés. this insightful, practical book has become the gospel for screenwriters everywhere. hollywood studios don't buy great ideas — they buy great stories that can capture an audience's imagination. and no one has helped more writers turn great ideas into great stories into great screenplays than robert mckee. – jacket flap.
Reviews:
I've only just breached the surface here, but from what I've read so far, I can tell this book is going on my permanent writing reference shelf. McKee knows his stuff and how to communicate it. I originally purchased this title as a supplementary resource suggested by Neil Gaiman's masterclass in storytelling, figuring if someone of his stature and experience found it useful, I might too. And I will be forever grateful that I did.morwynskya
Robert McKee is a master of the craft, and Story gives you all of the insight of his legendary three-day screenwriting seminar. A must for any kind of writer, it succinctly deconstructs the timeless and universal elements of storytelling in a way that will help writers understand how to strip the wasterful expository writing that too often bogs down a story and use only scenes that advance a story, give it meaning and hold the audience's attention.shelton_hammer
Whether you're trying to break into screenwriting or just improving your chosen field this book will take you to a higher level.trevogoud0

4. Story: Substance, Structure, Style, And The Principles Of Screenwriting [Book]

Product Details:
Writing for the screen is quirky business. a writer must labor meticulously over his or her prose, yet very little of that prose is ever heard by filmgoers. the few words that do reach the audience, in the form of the characters' dialogue, are, according to robert mckee, best left to last in the writing process. in this book, mckee puts into book form what he has been teaching screenwriters for years in his seminar on story structure, which is considered by many to be a prerequisite to the film biz. legions of writers flock to hollywood in search of easy money, calculating the best way to get rich quick. this book is not for them. mckee is passionate about the art of screenwriting. no one needs yet another recipe book on how to reheat hollywood leftovers, he writes. story is a true path to just such a rediscovery. in it, mckee offers so much sound advice, drawing from sources as wide ranging as aristotle and casablanca, stanislavski and chinatown, that it is impossible not to come away feeling immeasurably better equipped to write a screenplay and infinitely more inspired to write a brilliant one.

Reviews:
I have read quiet a few books on writing, watched lots of YouTube videos, and nothing has ever broken down the elements of story in a way that was so easy to understand before. Using popular films (and coming at story from a screenwriters point of view), this book nevertheless helped me understand concepts I have struggled with, and showed me why stories are often told in certain ways. Added to that the book was easy to read, and interesting throughout.Sarah
THis is THE text for any writer screen or other – it is excellent for telling the story. I am an experienced writer and it is still very helpful. This was recommended to me by two well known authors – it is worth every pennyrocketdog1969
This has long been regarded as the bible of screenwriting. McKee laments the lack of strong powerful stories on our screens, and then outlines (in great detail) the essential elements of any successful screenplay. He uses well known film examples to illustrate his points, and writes convincingly, making this (rather long) book seem quicker and easier to read.

Each stage is clearly explained in a very simple way. Making it all seem possible….helenbbn8
This is the classic how-to-think-about story for would-be screenwriters. It's worth every bead of sweat to read it for it contains the simplified analysis of much wisdom in these pages. In recent years there are more books in this how-to arena, but one should not discount Field's gem. Moreover, many of the story works tend to use mumbo-jumbo to describe the unconscious role of symbolism in stories, that's useful to some masters & neophytes, but much of the jargon is jarring & pretentious to the creative person, better left for the purely analytical schools; or crossover individuals. Fields books strike the balance. No better place to start.eggladyonwheels

Love this book! The teaching style is unconventional and entertaining, yet I learned soooo much from Snyder's instruction and insight. It's also a great gift for a fellow writer!arundel05
An excellent first step on your road to writing for the screen. In "Save the Cat" Snyder teaches you all you need to know about the 'science' of writing a script. He looks into the basic types of stories there are out there (and there's less than you'd expect) and gives you a clear and easy to understand runthrough on how to structure your script. Reviews:
With over 25 years of scriptwriting experience in Hollywood writing for TV features and moderate budget feature films for the big guys I'm impressed at the simplicity yet wisdom of this book and it's author Josh Clark out of USC's School of Cinema -Television. His book only contains 3 chapters: one on story one on format and one business. There's a no nonsense approach some bitterness great storytelling about the author's own experiences and enough technical advise and conventions of professional screenwriting rules to get a script writer or student well on their way to securing an agent a contest win or at the least a head start compared with the hundreds of thousands of spec scripts floating around the market. The book manages with much wit and an obvious expertise in filmic writing to display the importance of story and character plot and subplot using less dialog compared to more classical 3 act structure scenes sequences beats action format pacing and thousands of tiny tricks and tips the beginning screenwriter will be able to save years or decades by trial and error. No book can make you a pro screenwriter. But The Bare Bones Book of Screenwriting is a good step in the right direction.Ghost Writer
Perfect for first time screenwriters. it's simple and easy to understand covering story, format and business.Kat
