Reviews:
The book was for my son who is an obsessive skier! All I can tell you is that he rates the book very highly and is enjoying it when he has been able to find little pockets of time. As 'front line worker' he gets very little at the moment. But he has told me that he is so looking forward to 'losing himself' in it when the worse is far behind us. Thank you for this.sldav_95
A good way to do some armchair skiing while Covid keeps us from traveling, and gives you some places to add to your bucket list.wfb1956
This book was some what disappointing it is very US centric with only a few European resorts mentioned and very few images. Will D. G.

Reviews:
Definitely not your typical backcountry skiing guide book, as the author is not your typical guide book author: David Goodman is a 'real" writer who mainly writes on "real" topics (often with his sister Amy Goodman, whom you might have listened to on NPR affiliates while driving to and from your ski outings). This guide book also has some impressive historical pedigree, as the first edition was published in 1989, back when backcountry skiing was a very obscure activity in the Northeast. And still, whenever backcountry skiers in the Northeast refer to "the Goodman book" we all immediately know what is being referenced. All of this manifests itself in writing that would qualify as good writing in any context, coupled with a treatment of the historical background for many of the trails that will interest you even if you have no interest in actually going on any of these tours. (In the Northeast, we might not have much natural snowfall, temperature consistency, continuous vertical, or above-treeline terrain, but wow do we have history!) The downside is that as shown in the picture here of the covers from the first and second editions, definitely at its heart still an old school tele hippie focus. With all your modern gear from Skimo Co, actually going on some of these tours will have your wondering "Wait, that's it?" especially after such enticing write-ups. So if you're new to the sport in the Northeast, a must-read (and "back in the day" my wife and I would even bring photocopied sections into the field with us), but just keep your expectations realistic.Jonathan S

8. Two Planks And A Passion: The Dramatic History Of Skiing [Book]
Product Details:
Roland huntford's brilliant history begins 20,000 years ago in the last ice age on the icy tundra of an unformed earth. man is a travelling animal, and on these icy slopes skiing began as a means of survival.that it has developed into the leisure and sporting pursuit of choice by so much of the globe bears testament to its elemental appeal. in polar exploration, it has changed the course of history. elsewhere, in war and peace, it has done so too.
Reviews:
For anyone who loves skiing! Huntford did an amazing amount of research and he is also an excellent storyteller. I learned a lot and I loved hearing about so many developments of ski equipment and ski people over the centuries.hele-carls
9. Written In The Snows: Across Time On Skis In The Pacific Northwest [Book]

Product Details:
Century of northwest wilderness skiing stories by noted expert 150 black-and-white and color photographs celebrates the friluftsliv, or open-air living spirit, of backcountry skiing in written in the snows, renowned local skiing historian lowell skoog presents a definitive and visually rich history of the past century of northwest ski culture, from stirring and colorful stories of wilderness exploration to the evolution of gear and technique. he traces the development of skiing in washington from the late 1800s to the present, covering the beginnings of ski resorts and competitions, the importance of wild places in the cascade and olympic mountains (with a side trip to oregon's mount hood), and the friluftsliv, or open-air living spirit, of backcountry skiing. skoog addresses how skiing has been shaped by larger social trends, including immigration, the great depression, war, economic growth, conservation, and the media. in turn, northwest skiers have affected their region in ways that transcend the sport, producing local legends like milnor roberts, olga bolstad, hans otto giese, bill maxwell, and more. while weaving his own impressions and experiences into the larger history, skoog shows that skiing is far more than mere sport or recreation.
Reviews:
I was surprised and disappointed that Mr. Skoogs history had such limited coverage of Gretchen Kunigk Fraser who is the most accomplished and celebrated skier from Washington State. She was the first American skier to win Olympic metals-both a silver and a gold. She was the coach if the 1952 womens Olympic team, and the International coach of the year for the 1984 Special Olympics. Upon her return in 1948, she received a ticker tape parade in New York City, she was the queen of the Tacoma daffodil, parade, a parade was held in her honor in Vancouver, Washington, and her Olympic flag was flown in Portland, Oregon Gretchen was so recognized that the Wheaties company put her image on two Wheaties boxes and created a cartoon of her that they placed on over a dozen different comic books (including Batman and Tarzan). She doubled for Sonia Henie in two movies (Thin Ice and Sun Valley Saranad) and she performed in several of Otto Lands military films. Washingtons Secretary of State, Kim Wyman, featured Gretchen in the Simply Washington booklet-the only skier. Its disappointing that Mr. Skoogs 336 page history of skiing in the Pacific Northwest has only a couple sentences, no more than a footnote, about Gretchen. Not only is this disappointing, but it also distorts the history ofskiing in the Pacific Northwest. The otherwise solid history should consider the history of Gretchen Kunigk Fraser.johbechthol0
I was fortunate to hear Lowell give a presentation on his new book and it was amazing. If you are interested in the history of northwest skiing I highly recommend you read this book. Lots of great photos and rich ski history across the PNW region.John P

Reviews:
The quick turn around of this order was great. I did notice that this book 📕 has two different covers (no dust jacket) one with polar bears outside the cave and one with the boy with “King Winter.” The illustrations on either cover are lovely as are the images throughout the book.Liza T.
A charming, sweet fairy tale about a child who goes out to play in the snow, and meets Jack Frost, King Winter, and finally Mrs. Thaw. Like all older fairy tales, there's a bit of darkness lurking beneath the surface (I got a little nervous about a child disappearing into the forest with Jack Frost, who also seems a little bad-tempered and insulting, wondering if it was a metaphor for hypothermia … also, stranger-danger, Ollie!) and it's a genuine relief when he gets back home and everything is all right. Beautiful illustrations; really excited to read this to my snow-loving 3.5 year old when the holidays roll around.Adrianne M.
Sweet, and timeless. We love how the parents instruct young Ollie to eat a good meal (of porridge), dress warmly, and stay out until dark, equipped with a new pair of skis and a sandwich in each pocket.bobbbax
