2. Digital Minimalism: Choosing A Focused Life In A Noisy World [Book]

Product Details:
A new york times, wall street journal, publishers weekly, and usa today bestseller"newport is making a bid to be the marie kondo of technology: someone with an actual plan for helping you realize the digital pursuits that do, and don't, bring value to your life."–ezra klein, vox – minimalism is the art of knowing how much is just enough. digital minimalism applies this idea to our personal technology. it's the key to living a focused life in an increasingly noisy world. – in this timely and enlightening book, the bestselling author of deep work introduces a philosophy for technology use that has already improved countless lives. – digital minimalists are all around us. they're the calm, happy people who can hold long conversations without furtive glances at their phones. they can get lost in a good book, a woodworking project, or a leisurely morning run. they can have fun with friends and family without the obsessive urge to document the experience. they stay informed about the news of the day, but don't feel overwhelmed by it. they don't experience "fear of missing out" because they already know which activities provide them meaning and satisfaction. – now, newport gives us a name for this quiet movement, and makes a persuasive case for its urgency in our tech-saturated world. common sense tips, like turning off notifications, or occasional rituals like observing a digital sabbath, don't go far enough in helping us take back control of our technological lives, and attempts to unplug completely are complicated by the demands of family, friends and work. – drawing on a diverse array of real-life examples, from amish farmers to harried parents to silicon valley programmers, newport identifies the common practices of digital minimalists and the ideas that underpin them. he shows how digital minimalists are rethinking their relationship to social media, rediscovering the pleasures of the offline world, and reconnecting with their inner selves through regular periods of solitude. he then shares strategies for integrating these practices into your life, starting with a thirty-day "digital declutter" process that has already helped thousands feel less overwhelmed and more in control. – technology is intrinsically neither good nor bad. the key is using it to support your goals and values, rather than letting it use you. this book shows the way.

3. The Self-Taught Programmer: The Definitive Guide To Programming Professionally [Book]

Product Details:
'one of the best software design books of all time' – bookauthority cory althoff is a self-taught programmer. but once he got there, he realised he was severely under-prepared. he was overwhelmed by the amount of things he needed to know but hadn't learned. his journey learning to program, and his experience in first software engineering job were the inspiration for this book. this book is not just about learning to program, although you will learn to code. if you want to program professionally, it is not enough to learn to code; that is why, in addition to helping you learn to program, althoff also cover the rest of the things you need to know to program professionally that classes and books don't teach you. the self-taught programmer is a roadmap, a guide to take you from writing your first python program to passing your first technical interview. the book is divided into five sections: 1. learn to program in python 3 and build your first program. 2. learn object-oriented programming and create a powerful python program to get you hooked. 3. learn to use tools like git, bash and regular expressions. then use your new coding skills to build a web scraper. 4. study computer science fundamentals like data structures and algorithms. 5. finish with best coding practices, tips for working with a team and advice on landing a programming job. you can learn to program professionally. the path is there. will you take it? from the author i spent one year writing the self-taught programmer. it was an exciting and rewarding experience. i treated my book like a software project. after i finished writing it, i created a program to pick out all of the code examples from the book and execute them in python to make sure all 300+ examples worked properly. then i wrote software to add line numbers and color to every code example. finally, i had a group of 200 new programmers 'beta read' the book to identify poorly explained concepts and look for any errors my program missed. i hope you learn as much reading my book as i did writing it. best of luck with your programming!

This book is a quick paced introduction to coding. The examples are really useful for helping to understand the different concepts and their uses and to build confidence. I have read a few different introductory books however, as a self taught student, I found that the author better understands my position and I prefer their approach.David

Product Details:
Why do half of all technology projects fail? a major reason is that organizations often pick the wrong tools, leaving them digitally hamstrung from the start. this book offers a modern alternative to traditional waterfall approaches to selecting technology. you'll learn a practical, adaptive process that relies on realistic storytelling and hands-on testing to get the best fit for your enterprise.
6. Anti-Tech Revolution: Why And How [Book]

Product Details:
"there are many people today who see that modern society is heading toward disaster in one form or another, and who moreover recognize technology as the common thread linking the principal dangers that hang over us… the purpose of this book is to show people how to begin thinking in practical, grand-strategic terms about what must be done in order to get our society off the road to destruction that it is now on." –from the preface in anti-tech revolution: why and how, kaczynski argues why the rational prediction and control of the development of society is impossible while expounding on the existence of a process fundamental to technological growth that inevitably leads to disaster: a universal process akin to biological natural selection operating autonomously on all dynamic systems and determining the long-term outcome of all significant social developments. taking a highly logical, fact-based, and intellectually rigorous approach, kaczynski seamlessly systematizes a vast breadth of knowledge and elegantly reconciles the social sciences with biology to illustrate how technological growth in and of itself necessarily leads to disastrous disruption of global biological systems. together with this new understanding of social and biological change, and by way of an extensive examination of the dynamics of social movements, kaczynski argues why there is only one route available to avoid the disaster that technological growth entails: a revolution against technology and industrial society. through critical and comprehensive analysis of the principles of social revolutions and by carefully developing an exacting theory of successful revolution, kaczynski offers a practical, rational, and realistic guide for preventing the fast-approaching technology-induced catastrophe. this new second edition (2020) contains various updates and improvements over the first edition (2016), including two new appendices. note: theodore john kaczynski does not receive any remuneration for this book.

9. Blockchain Revolution: How The Technology Behind Bitcoin And Other Cryptocurrencies Is Changing The World [Book]

Product Details:
Over the past 30 years, no theorist of the digital age has better explained the next big thing than don tapscott. for example, in wikinomics, tapscott was the first to show how the internet provides the first global platform for mass collaboration. now, he writes about a profound technological shift that will change how the world does business–and everything else–using blockchain technology, which powers the digital currency bitcoin. the new blockchain technology facilitates peer-to-peer transactions without any intermediary such as a bank or governing body. keeping the user's information anonymous, the blockchain validates and keeps a permanent public record of all transactions. that means that your personal information is private and secure, while all activity is transparent and incorruptible–reconciled by mass collaboration and stored in code on a digital ledger. although many opportunities for the blockchain require a digital currency, bitcoin is only one application of this great innovation in computer science. the blockchain can hold any legal document, from deeds and marriage licences to educational degrees and birth certificates. call it the world wide ledger. it enables smart contracts, decentralized autonomous organizations, decentralized government services, and transactions among things. tapscott, writing with his son alex, a financial analyst and technologist, argues that the blockchain will shape the next era of prosperity–in finance, business, healthcare, education, governance, and beyond."–

15. Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn't, And Why It Matters [Book]

Product Details:
Wall street journal bestseller – 2022 ippy awards gold medalist — science – national indie excellence awards finalist — political – 2021 world magazine accessible science book of the year — honorable mention"unsettled is a remarkable book—probably the best book on climate change for the intelligent layperson—that achieves the feat of conveying complex information clearly and in depth." —claremont review of books“[unsettled] is no polemic. it’s a plea for understanding how scientists extract clarity from complexity.” — wall street journal"surging sea levels are inundating the coasts." "hurricanes and tornadoes are becoming fiercer and more frequent." "climate change will be an economic disaster." you've heard all this presented as fact. but according to science, all of these statements are profoundly misleading. when it comes to climate change, the media, politicians, and other prominent voices have declared that "the science is settled." in reality, the long game of telephone from research to reports to the popular media is corrupted by misunderstanding and misinformation. core questions—about the way the climate is responding to our influence, and what the impacts will be—remain largely unanswered. the climate is changing, but the why and how aren't as clear as you've probably been led to believe. now, one of america's most distinguished scientists is clearing away the fog to explain what science really says (and doesn't say) about our changing climate. in unsettled: what climate science tells us, what it doesn't, and why it matters, steven koonin draws upon his decades of experience—including as a top science advisor to the obama administration—to provide up-to-date insights and expert perspective free from political agendas. fascinating, clear-headed, and full of surprises, this book gives readers the tools to both understand the climate issue and be savvier consumers of science media in general. koonin takes readers behind the headlines to the more nuanced science itself, showing us where it comes from and guiding us through the implications of the evidence. he dispels popular myths and unveils little-known truths: despite a dramatic rise in greenhouse gas emissions, global temperatures actually decreased from 1940 to 1970. koonin also tackles society's response to a changing climate, using data-driven analysis to explain why many proposed "solutions" would be ineffective, and discussing how alternatives like adaptation and, if necessary, geoengineering will ensure humanity continues to prosper.
Reviews:
Those interested in climate change AKA global warming should definitely read this book. The author is highly credentialed in both the science and (most importantly) the politics swirling around this subject. I fear it won't be a sensation because it does not pander to the polar opposites – rather it is critical of ALL extremists. Probably the most reasonable and balanced book on this subject that I have readWarwick
Most books on climate change are politically-motivated, weak on scientific evidence and little more than populist scaremongering. Unsettled is very different and very welcome. The author has impeccable credentials, as former Undersecretary for Science in the US Department of Energy (and too many others to mention), and has written the book to take the climate debate away from politicians and ill-informed mass media, all with their own agendas and axes to grind. He has asked and answered the questions that these others have avoided, in a very readable but well-referenced book, to deal with the confusion of the climate science debate and proffer realistic solutions to an issue that will continue to affect us all. it is not only a timely book but a necessary one to balance out the group-think that has dominated this topic for too long. Highly recommended.Phantom Duck
