An unforgettable, illuminating story of how men live and how they survive, from the acclaimed new york times bestselling author of cutting for stone when abraham verghese, a physician whose marriage is unraveling, relocates to el paso, texas, he hopes to make a fresh start as a staff member at the county hospital. there he meets david smith, a medical student recovering from drug addiction, and the two men begin a tennis ritual that allows them to shed their inhibitions and find security in the sport they love and with each other. this friendship between doctor and intern grows increasingly rich and complex, more intimate than two men usually allow. just when it seems nothing can go wrong, the dark beast from david’s past emerges once again—and almost everything verghese has come to trust and believe in is threatened as david spirals out of control.

Great book! Recommended by a friend to help me with my pickleball game. I am my own worse enemy on the court and this is helping to "quiet my mind" so that I can let my body perform and stop beating myself up.jupal_7382
9/6/2021 I first read this book when it was published in 1974, and I improved my tennis game 100%, especially the serve. Now, upon reading it again, I am still finding it helpful. In particular, Gallwey's "let it happen" doctrine is the best weapon with which to combat shoddy strokes and repalce them with good ones.fdelapuente

Reviews:
the best book ever I ever read in my entire life, believe meemmbr_us_c9jabuvxu
I never got to read this book because BAM never shipped it to me. I ordered it about a week before Christmas and their website said "in stock. will take an extra week for delivery." That sounded good. Fast forward two weeks and it still hadn't shipped. After several attempts to contact Customer Support (it was like pulling teeth to get a response. And the few responses I got were copy and paste answers.) I was finally told this book was on back-order and I would receive an update when it was available. I asked why the website listed String Theory as "in stock" and I was told they would be updating their website. This morning (1/23/17) I was told my order was being cancelled since the book was still on backorder. And yet when I check the website it STILL says that String Theory is in stock. Great going BAM, you really seem competent at running a business. I'll be taking my business elsewhere from now on.Kellie

14. The Pros: The Forgotten Era Of Tennis [Book]
Product Details:
To most modern day tennis fans, it was impossible to believe that until the late 1960s pro tennis players–that is those who played openly for prize money–were banned from competing in the world's major tournaments. before this time, the great contests such as wimbledon were exclusive to so-called amateurs. amateur tennis players were meant to compete only for glory. though this division arose the "pro tour" in the 1930s, and it endured for forty years. in the pros, the forgotten era of tennis, author peter underwood explains why professional players were forced into what was often called the traveling circus where these sporting outcasts played each other during long and rather tatty tours all over the world. focusing on the eight champions who dominated the pro era beginning in 1930 with the ultimately tragic figure of "big" bill tilden, this book follows each pro champion through the post-1962 grand slam pro career of rod laver, who then helped usher in the modern-era of pro tennis with the start of the "open" era in 1968.

19. Tennis: A Cultural History [Book]
Product Details:
This is the second edition of the highly acclaimed and bestselling comprehensive history of tennis which was the first truly scholarly history of any individual sport. supported by a startling wealth of linguistic and documentary research, gillmeister charts the global evolution of tennis from its origins in 12th century france where it emerged as a more peaceful variety of ribald football played in monasteries. by the 16th century, it had become the favourite pastime of the european aristocracy and had, in the wake of the spanish conquistadors, even reached the americas. the prestige of the game also led to its popularity among renaissance poets and playwrights. after a gradual decline in the 18th and 19th centuries the medieval game revived in the 1870s in the form of lawn tennis. the new game dispensed with the expensive walled courts, discarded the complicated rules of the old game and was played in a natural setting. from england with its famous wimbledon tournament it spread to the european continent and to the united states where the davis cup was born. gillmeister debunks several firmly established myths about the history of the game and rare colour photographs and medieval and renaissance drawings generously adorn the text. a delight for the sports fan and the scholar alike, tennis is the authoritative text on the sport.
