1. Becoming Nicole: The Inspiring Story Of Transgender Actor-Activist Nicole Maines And Her Extraordinary Family [Book]

Product Details:
"the inspiring true story of a transgender girl, her identical twin brother, and an ordinary american family's extraordinary journey to understand, nurture, and celebrate the uniqueness in us all, from the pulitzer prize-winning science reporter for the washington post when wayne and kelly maines adopted identical twin boys, they thought their lives were complete. but it wasn't long before they noticed a marked difference between jonas and his brother, wyatt. jonas preferred sports and trucks and many of the things little boys were "supposed" to like; but wyatt liked princess dolls and dress-up and playing little mermaid. by the time the twins were toddlers, confusion over wyatt's insistence that he was female began to tear the family apart. in the years that followed, the maineses came to question their long-held views on gender and identity, to accept and embrace wyatt's transition to nicole, and to undergo an emotionally wrenching transformation of their own that would change all their lives forever. becoming nicole chronicles a journey that could have destroyed a family but instead brought it closer together. it's the story of a mother whose instincts told her that her child needed love and acceptance, not ostracism and disapproval; of a republican, air force veteran father who overcame his deepest fears to become a vocal advocate for trans rights; of a loving brother who bravely stuck up for his twin sister; and of a town forced to confront its prejudices, a school compelled to rewrite its rules, and a courageous community of transgender activists determined to make their voices heard. ultimately, becoming nicole is the story of an extraordinary girl who fought for the right to be herself. granted wide-ranging access to personal diaries, home videos, clinical journals, legal documents, medical records, and the maineses themselves, amy ellis nutt spent almost four years reporting this immersive account of an american family confronting an issue that is at the center of today's cultural debate. becoming nicole will resonate with anyone who's ever raised a child, felt at odds with society's conventions and norms, or had to embrace life when it plays out unexpectedly. it's a story of standing up for your beliefs and yourself–and it will inspire all of us to do the same. advance praise for becoming nicole "becoming nicole is a miracle. it's the story of a family struggling with–and embracing–a transgender child. but more than that, it's about accepting one another, and ourselves, in all our messy, contradictory glory. the maines family is as american as they come.
Reviews:
The book is very interesting and thought provoking. It shows people at their best and their worst and the struggle a family had to go through to support their love one. The book made me wish there was more love and understanding in the world, but I'm pessimistic about thatjawstazz
This is a story about a transgender woman, Nicole, and her family. Nicole knows that she is a girl from very young and this is an account of how the rest of her family, friends, community support and accept (or not accept) her along the way. It's a story about learning, love, acceptance, and education. Nicole and her family fight for her rights to keep her safe and spread awareness about transgender children throughout the state of Maine and eventually the country. Very well written, both informative and heart-felt. This book is for anyone wanting to learn about one trans woman's story, or who love a story about family, growth, love, and transformation.iluvyellow
I learned so much by reading this book. I don't know if I could have been so supportive of Nicole. I would hope that I would be, but I just don't know.Connie
2. Black On Both Sides: A Racial History Of Trans Identity [Book]

Product Details:
Winner of the john boswell prize from the american historical association 2018 winner of the william sanders scarborough prize from the modern language association 2018 winner of an american library association stonewall honor 2018 winner of lambda literary award for transgender nonfiction 2018 winner of the sylvia rivera award in transgender studies from the center for lesbian and gay studies the story of christine jorgensen, america's first prominent transsexual, famously narrated trans embodiment in the postwar era. her celebrity, however, has obscured other mid-century trans narratives–ones lived by african americans such as lucy hicks anderson and james mcharris. their erasure from trans history masks the profound ways race has figured prominently in the construction and representation of transgender subjects. riley snorton identifies multiple intersections between blackness and transness from the mid-nineteenth century to present-day anti-black and anti-trans legislation and violence. drawing on a deep and varied archive of materials–early sexological texts, fugitive slave narratives, afro-modernist literature, sensationalist journalism, hollywood films–snorton attends to how slavery and the production of racialized gender provided the foundations for an understanding of gender as mutable. in tracing the twinned genealogies of blackness and transness, snorton follows multiple trajectories, from the medical experiments conducted on enslaved black women by j. marion sims, the "father of american gynecology," to the negation of blackness that makes transnormativity possible. revealing instances of personal sovereignty among blacks living in the antebellum north that were mapped in terms of "cross dressing" and canonical black literary works that express black men's access to the "female within," black on both sides concludes with a reading of the fate of phillip devine, who was murdered alongside brandon teena in 1993, a fact omitted from the film boys don't cry out of narrative convenience. reconstructing these theoretical and historical trajectories furthers our imaginative capacities to conceive more livable black and trans worlds.

Reviews:
Review written for 'God and the Transgender Debate (ebook)': I found this book to be an excellent guide to this difficult topic with an emphasis on biblical truth tempered by a loving and compassionate approach. Highly recommendedSimon S
With an extra chapter ("Challenging the Transgender Movement") and updates elsewhere, this updated copy of Walker's 2017 book is one of the best works you can purchase to understand the biblical response to the transgender debate. It's a book that is both firm on its biblical foundations and pastorally sensitive, helping ministers like myself to navigate such a challenging topic. It's easy to read, no matter how much you know about the topic, and I'd recommend it to any of my church members who wanted to think about how we can respond lovingly and biblically.Ben H
Review written for 'God and the Transgender Debate': If we were to turn down the noise of the ongoing cultural debate around transgenderism, we would undoubtedly notice that many people are hurting and in deep distress with regard to their bodies. However, several factors have made it difficult for Christians to appropriately respond to this hurt: – A limited knowledge of the struggles of gender dysphoria. – Confusion over rapidly changing terms, phrases and concepts that were once familiar. – The need for a clear presentation of the biblical vision of gender, identity and creation. Andrew T Walker's "God and the Transgender Debate" powerfully addresses these knowledge gaps. It is not simply another cold analysis or derogatory hit piece, but a heartfelt and considerate attempt to diagnose the fundamental issues and offer scriptural, practical and loving solutions. After briefly outlying how we got here as a culture, Walker points us to God's creational blueprint clearly revealed in scripture and in nature. It is an important reminder of the beautiful vision that we should endeavor to preserve and beckon others not to deviate from. Gender dysphoria is a very specific struggle, Walker reminds us that it is a product of a much more general problem of living in a fallen and groaning world. As such, the call to deny ourselves, take up a cross and follow Jesus may have different and difficult implications but it is equally refreshing and restorative. As Christians, we are encouraged to emulate Jesus in our interactions with colleagues, friends or close family members, and to show them to the same cross that liberated us from our sin. The solutions and answers presented in this book will be challenging for some, but I believe this is an excellent doorway into this discussion for Christians not only looking to stand for truth but to offer marvelous grace to those that are suffering.James

13. Black Trans Feminism [Book]
Product Details:
In black trans feminism marquis bey offers a meditation on blackness and gender nonnormativity in ways that recalibrate traditional understandings of each. theorizing black trans feminism from the vantages of abolition and gender radicality, bey articulates blackness as a mutiny against racializing categorizations; transness as a nonpredetermined, wayward, and deregulated movement that works toward gender’s destruction; and black feminism as an epistemological method to fracture hegemonic modes of racialized gender. in readings of the essays, interviews, and poems of alexis pauline gumbs, jayy dodd, and venus di’khadijah selenite, bey turns black trans feminism away from a politics of gendered embodiment and toward a conception of it as a politics grounded in fugitivity and the subversion of power. together, blackness and transness actualize themselves as on the run from gender.

16. Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, And The Fight For Trans Equality [Book]

Product Details:
New condition, paperback. before speaking at a national political convention about her experiences as a transgender person, the author struggled with the decision to come out – not just to her family but to the students at her university, where she was serving as student body president. she'd known she was a girl from her earliest memories, but it wasn't until a facebook post announcing her truth went viral that she realized the impact her story could have on the country. four years later, the author was one of the nation's most prominent transgender activists, walking the halls of the white house, advocating inclusive legislation, and addressing the country in the midst of a heated presidential election. she had also found her first love and future husband, a trans man and fellow activist, who complemented her in every way … until cancer tragically intervened. this book is the author's story of love and loss and an account of the lgbtq community's battle for equal rights.–adapted from dust jacket.

Powerfully inspirational, an uplifting Transgender story that gives hope and PRIDE. Encourages readers to always…above all else…always be our amazing and wonderful selves living our truths.Transcends
This was one of the most amazing books I have ever read. I picked it up on Saturday and I could not put it down until I finished it on Sunday. Tomorrow Will Be Different is about Sarah's transition as a transgender female from Delaware. You will be completely wrapped up in her story and that of her husband, Andy. From her coming out to her using her voice, and her story, as an advocate for others in the LGBTQ community. She provides vivid accounts of her time in the White House as an intern, advocating for equal rights and equal protection in the Delaware State Senate, and on the death of her husband (this one brought me to tears). She is a warm and loving person and to read her words is almost as if you are sitting down with a friend and having a conversation. She is someone that I would love to have coffee with and want to educate me on the LGBTQ issues (there is a lot to learn here). The book is eye opening and I don't think you can read and not realize that there are changes that are needed in this country. Protections for those who are transgender are slim and don't provide them with nearly enough protection and dignity…may those necessary changes happen swiftly (they shouldn't have to wait).Rachelkyle

From beginning to end, this book makes sense! Explaining what being Transgender is can be tricky, but these writers have created a simple way to get it done!! Buy one for every teacher you know whatever grade level!Holly M.
Purchased this book as a way to facilitate communication for young woman coming out to her grandparents (both older in their 80s). Simple and powerful concepts and easy to read. Great for people of all ages.Birgit G.
Love that this was written by a child who is indeed transgender. It’s powerful, moving, simple, yet profound. As someone who has transgender family members and friends, I am looking forward to sharing with them and their children. At first I was hoping for illustrations which help draw kids in, but realize it’s power is that it doesn’t just speak for one, but for all. Thank you for writing this book and the many others that are in the series ❤️Molly N.

20. The Transgender Issue: An Argument For Justice [Book]

Product Details:
The instant sunday times bestseller 'few books are as urgent as shon faye's debut … despite making up less than one per cent of the country's population, they are the subjects of a toxic and increasingly polarized 'debate' which generates reliable controversy for newspapers and talk shows. in this powerful new book, shon faye reclaims the idea of the 'transgender issue' to uncover the reality of what it means to be trans in a transphobic society. in doing so, she provides a compelling, wide-ranging analysis of trans lives from youth to old age, exploring work, family, housing, healthcare, the prison system and trans participation in the lgbtq+ and feminist communities, in contemporary britain and beyond. the transgender issue is a landmark work that signals the beginning of a new, healthier conversation about trans life. it is a manifesto for change, and a call for justice and solidarity between all marginalized people and minorities. trans liberation, as faye sees it, goes to the root of what our society is and what it could be; it offers the possibility of a more just, free and joyful world for all of us. 'fundamentally not a culture-war book. it operates outside the narrow coverage of trans people in the mainstream, and lays bare the inarguable facts' new statesman 'monumental and utterly convincing – crystal clear in its understanding of how the world should be' judith butler

A necessary, lucid and intelligent work.Jo B
Very moving book if a little depressing to be honest. I had no idea that transgender people had suffered so much and I could have cried. Shon writes brilliantly and is a superb researcher. She paints the world clearly as it is. In her next book I want to know the plan to advance the standing of transgender people in Britain. I think transphobia can be ended under capitalism too but I do not blame her for thinking otherwise at present.Anonymous
Such important discussions, and so well written. Enjoyed every page.Jess
